Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 Blu-ray Review

The hype, the buzz, and the success of Beverly Hills Chihuahua’s first foray definitely surrounded this release at my house hold. The question is, did it live up to it’s predecessor’s expectations? A most definitive, no. Sad, but true. Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 started out with a more unbelievable and ridiculous setting then could be imagined even for a movie based on talking Beverly Hills Chihuahuas. The first one was great, and had a pretty good script for the most part; even when not realistic. This one however, started with the wedding of Chloe and Papi and it was done out like a real huge expensive wedding that was very far fetched even for a movie like this. I guess this stems from personal opinions because the first was so good that when they went off the deep end with this one it just really took me for a turn that I didn’t expect due to the first one’s already set tone.

There’s an 8 year old girl in my house hold and granted she has already watched int 2 times she too said it wasn’t that good of a movie. It’s sad that this looks like its turning into just another Disney cash cow like the “Puppies” movies. I thought they had potential with this one, but with a straight to home video movie they cut out a lot of the stars and talent and I presume the original writers. *rolls eyes* If a third one ever sees the light of day I truly hope they invest more in the script and talent, as this franchise definitely had the potential after the first.

So what’s this one about you ask? Well, here’s a quick break down for you because that’s really all you need. Chloe and Papi get married and have a litter of puppies. Who are rambunctious as all get out, bad news comes in the way of their owner’s parents house foreclosure so they are set to raise the money and save the day. Drama comes along in the way of a bank robbery that they solve. Yeah, that’s about all you need to know. *shrug*

The sequel to Beverly Hills Chihuahua comes to you in lovely 1080p as you would expect. It’s presented in 1.78:1 format and just may very well be the best thing about this film. Lots of vibrant colors grace this movie, and thus there is tons of chances for video quality eye candy. The fact that there is doggies galore in this movie gives it another chance to shine in the VQ department as you can see all their intricate hairs and depth in their bodies, teeth, faces, etc. Lest we not forget that for a movie of this magnitude it clearly gets the job done in a way more than average type of way. Was there any imperfections? Sure, but we’re talking Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 here, this isn’t Taxi Driver.

If a pit bull was barking at you it would probably be described as scary as hell. In the same logic in regards to audio quality we’d love to say this was a pit bull like audio track. You know, thick, thunderous, loud, extreme clarity and so on. However, this is Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and that’s exactly what it sounds like; a Beverly Hills Chihuahua. It’s yappy, at times annoying, did I mention yappy? Case in point, since it is yappy you don’t have problems with clarity. However it wasn’t thick by any means, perhaps problems on the mixing end or not the best equipment. *shrug* It gets the job done for this movie, but in regards to the scores I thought it was just missing something each time. Though I have a good feeling a lot has to do with the lower budget that Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 had compared to Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Overall, above average but leaves something to be desired especially because it’s Disney and for what is a DTS-HD Master audio track.

The fact that this title comes with a DVD is absolute god send for those families who don’t have a blu-ray player in the kids room. Which I’m sure many can attest to. As stated early on this movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 falls very short of Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Thus, your kid may still love the talking Chihuahuas and want to watch this over and over, but you my friend won’t! So be happy a DVD is included.

Special features are meek and include what is below:

Beverly Hills Chihuahua Challenge: An entertaining interactive game guided by Papi (George Lopez)
Blooper Faux Paws: Ok, this is actually pretty funny.
“This is my Paradise” Music video by Disney star Bridgit Mendler

I’d love to sit here and tell you that its as great as the first if not better, but it’s not. I know most adults don’t buy these types of kids movies with themselves in mind, but after the extremely entertaining first outing of Beverly Hills Chihuahua I was thinking of how much I wanted to see this. So yeah, it bombed at an adult level, but if you got kids who are fans of the title (or have already seen it and want it) then you might as well pick it up at this time for it’s great low price. Disney is offering a $10 coupon for this title. (at the Disneymovierewards.com site) The video quality is above par, and the audio quality isn’t bad by any means so overall its a good disc for it’s target audience. At this price point, it’s a great deal for interested kids. Our score doesn’t factor in our personal opinion of the movie, it’s based upon the VQ, AQ, and Supplements worth.
