Robot Chicken: DC Comics Special Blu-ray Review

RCDC-1

The Robot Chicken DC Special follows the same satirical formula that has made them successful, but this time they have chosen to do a full episode focusing on characters from the DC Universe. The character list is vast ranging from the classic characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, The Joker, Lex Luthor, Cat woman, etc. with a story that primarily focuses on Aquaman. Again if you are familiar with Robot Chicken’s style and sense of humor, there are a lot of things that really stand out and make this an entertaining piece. The content appears to be fresh and not really as recycled as some of the previous stuff that has been coming in recent seasons.

The DC special is very entertaining and its creators took all the good things from the universe and applied it into the episode. In fact the show has very old schools feel to it; simply because they chose to go ahead and use the classic superhero looks rather than the more modernized versions. Even the intro was a blast from the past, employing a colorful background with the marching heroes/villains. There are several sketches that really are great and some that can be a hit or miss. Although this episode is really aimed at the DC fans, however, if you are not familiar with Robot Chicken I would consider watching a few episodes from the vastly available videos online. I was disappointed with the length of the special, I was hoping for at least a full hour since the main feature was incredibly short, although the main feature is very well complimented by all the special features included.

Robot Chicken: DC Special arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p VC-1 encode framed at 1.78:1. Surprisingly, this release looks a lot better than I expected and that’s not a bad thing. The colors really stand out with enough vibrancy. Black levels deep and well reproduced with no crushing detected. Detailing is actually quite good, the toys used and the fabric all feature great deal of details. Perfect example is the joker and his purple suit or even cat woman’s suit reveals the fabric’s patterns. There are a few random sign of noise, but they are far too few to be a bigger issue.

Robot Chicken: DC Special arrives on Blu-ray with 5.1 Dolby TrueHD lossless track. The track is rather simple and mostly front heavy. The dialogue and music come through the fronts very clean and clear. There is a good sense of directionality. The rears are barely noticeable, they almost go unnoticed. With that being said this track does the bare minimum.

I’m sure that many fans of Robot Chicken already caught the special that aired on TV, but the ones that haven’t should consider this release. The main future is short but the plenty of supplements really round up the title. The audio and video are pleasantly surprising. Overall, I would say that fans of the show should not hesitate picking up this release.
