Trailer debut for Michael Mann tech thriller BLACKHAT, starring Chris Hemsworth

In a world of smartphones and social media over-sharing, information is power and the tech savvy are bound to inherit the Earth. Michael Mann (THIEF, HEAT) ventures into the deep dark corners of the worldwide web with his latest thriller BLACKHAT, starring Chris Hemsworth and Viola Davis. Hemsworth trades in Mjölnir for a computer, playing an imprisoned hacker enlisted by the authorities to capture a cyberterrorist. Mann and Hemsworth appeared at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year to debut footage from the film, touting it as a taut, suspenseful cat-and-mouse type story on a sprawling, international scale. One can see why the story would interest Mann, who is no stranger to exploring criminal underworlds or characters who like to toe the line between good and evil. Mann seems to enjoy casting against type, such as Tom Cruise in his villainous stint in COLLATERAL. This seems to be the case with Hemsworth, who is widely known for his portrayal of Asgardian Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not much else (although his role in Ron Howard’s RUSH about Formula 51 racers James Hunt and Niki Lauda was a good effort in the Australian actor’s attempt at leaving his superhero persona behind).

Audiences will find out whether Hemsworth can take on the role of a formidable hacker when BLACKHAT arrives in theaters on January 16, 2015.
