Funko has released their debut Disney Treasure subscription box for April 2017.  The theme is The Pirate’s Cove and there is definitely no shortage of pirates.  This is a bi-monthly subscription box, which you can pay for per box at $26 USD; $25 USD for a 6-month plan; or you can pay for an annual membership at $24 USD per box.  Either price points are before the taxes and shipping charges.  From what I understand, this is an introductory price for a year and then there will be an increase.

THE BOX ART:

The box art on this one and possibly the entire line is of a trunk or a treasure chest with a sticker like you would see on a steamer trunk about a 100 or so years ago.  The sticker is for the theme and the month.  In my particular box, there was a thank you note and an extra sticker from Funko.

When you open the lid, you see the patch and pin like in the other subscription boxes but there is one notable difference here: there is a map of the planned destinations for the first year.  It is the same as the treasure map that they have given you on the back of the production card.

PATCH AND PIN:

The patch is of the POP! styled Captain Hook head with two rapiers under it.  The Hook figure is the one that was released ages ago and goes with the Mr. Smee POP! Included in this box.

The pin is of Mickey Mouse in a pirate look with the Disney Treasures logo underneath.  It’s a nice pin but it’s a little too small with the size of that logo.  I had a tough time trying to see what was actually written there.  For the backing of it, they made a rubber Mickey ears logo.  It is definitely an appreciated little nice touch.

FUNKO POP!:

The Exclusive POP! Figure is of the most infamous pirate’s assistant ever: Mr. Smee from animated film PETER PAN.  He has the red cap with pompom, striped shirt with his tummy hanging out of the bottom, and his big pink nose with little glasses.  The painting and sculpting is spot on to really capture how Smee would stand on the deck of the Jolly Roger.  I really like the figure but he doesn’t stand on his own.  It could be that his center of gravity is off but, to me, it looks like the heels to his feet are pointed back just a little too much and this makes him tip over.  A clear stand or slight foot adjustment would most likely fix this.  I don’t know if it is only my figure but I tried it on a few different tables to make sure it wasn’t the table that I was taking the photos on.

MYSTERY MINI:

The included Mystery Mini is Jack Sparrow from the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series.  He is in the likeness of the drunk and over-sunned pirate from the movie with the little braids in his hair on down to the outfit.  The coloring is bold in places and you would find me buying a whole mess of these if they offered them through retailers.

He comes in a tin with artwork on all four sides of it.  To the best of knowledge, two of the sides are based on the films and the other two are from the famed ride at the Disney Parks.  I dig the artwork because the ride was one of my favorites when I went as a kid.  That’s why I like the side with the entrance to the ride.  I will definitely find something to do with the tin box.

THE WICKED WENCH DORBZ RIDE:

The Pièce De Résistance is this Dorbz ride of The Wicked Wench ride and the Dorbz Captain.  First off, the Captain figure has a lot going on and I completely mean that in a god way.  He is in a red coat with a classic black hat that has a skull and crossbones on it.  The two best little parts about him are the sword and his braided beard.  They add a little something to a figure in command of this ship.

The Wicked Wench is a beauty.  There have been a lot of cool rides with both the POP! line and the Dorbz but I think, aside from the Ant-Man with Ant-hony, this one might be my favorite so far.  There is a lot of little intricacies in the decoration, including the paintwork on the entire ship, that I’m sure took a lot of time rather than just using a few primary colors to get the point across.  I also like the small tabs on the bow where the figure sits because he is held in there with no chance of him falling out.  The stern also has some nice window derailing, making the ship look incredibly nice.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

I think that this is a successful debut and something to get the fans both interested and talking about what could be coming down the line.  There is so much potential for themes and to even explore creating new lines for the boxes.  The one thing that may hurt this box is that it is very simple however the items inside are strong.  Sure, there were a few minor issues but this should appease to the Disney fans for sure.  Keep an eye out for the next box that is themed Festival of Friends. So, thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Please comment or ask questions of you have them, thanks again!
