Samuel Sears and his family live on a secluded farm. He lives with his daughter and his wife but keeps the daughter away from outside civilization. As it turns out, Samuel is an escaped Nazi who has a haunted artifact that used to belong to Hitler. Years later after the daughter disappears and the wife leaves the farm, there is a new family living there. A college student named Reagan and her friends come up to babysit for the weekend but this won’t be a normal experience.

THE HATRED is a horror movie that is sort of like a stew with no recipe. There is the ex-nazi thing, a supernatural thing, and an unexplored past. It’s as if the filmmakers couldn’t decide on the genre and said, “Why don’t we make them all?”

VIDEO QUALITY:

The video is a 1080p AVC presentation has some strong points. Even though the whole movie has a digital look, the opening scene has clearly been made to look older. Then in the present, the coloring is very bright. There isn’t so much stand out colors but every color is bold. The details are crisp and contrasting looks great. There are some light issues in the darker scenes with small pixilation and minimal murk.

AUDIO QUALITY:

The audio is a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix that is underwhelming. At the beginning, there is some decent surround use in all of the channels but as soon as you meet the college girls, the track becomes light and only has a little bit of ambient sound. Once the weirdness in the house begins, then things pick up again. The LFEs are decent when they’re needed.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

THE HATRED isn’t exactly my cup of tea. As I mentioned earlier, there is too much going on and no real direction. The release has a good video transfer and an average audio mix. The extras are very light with maybe a few things that I could see getting its very own featurette. Technically, the release average but I would say rent it first.
