FIFTY SHADES FREED 4k Ultra HD and Blu-ray Review

[wp-review id=”89340″]

After the events of FIFTY SHADES DARKER, Christian and Ana have exchanged their vows. For the honeymoon, they are traveling across Europe and they have the personal security in tow at all times. Unfortunately, the honeymoon is cut short due to an incident at Grey Enterprises. Some information has been stolen and they figure out that it is Jack Hyde. He is mad as hell and wants to take revenge on the two for ruining his career, life, and reputation.

FIFTY SHADES FREED marks the return of director James Foley for the final film in the trilogy. He previously directed FIFTY SHADES DARKER and CONFIDENCE. This movie is not as raunchy as the prior two so for those who came just for that, you might be a little disappointed. I will say that as far as the story goes, it is all over the place. There is a lot happening and I’m willing to bet that there may be more context in the books that didn’t make the movie.

VIDEO QUALITY:

4k UHD
The video is a 2160p HEVC presentation and it has a spectacular transfer. You can see the details from the beginning in the close-up shots of the two dressing for the wedding. The intricacies of the dress, his shirt’s materials, and the decor of the venue is very clear. This time around has some more color with more of this moving taking place outside of the city. The greens are lush and reds are bold. The colors during the scene with them running around Europe are also brilliant. The skin tones are warm and natural with even one of the character’s poorly done tan showing. With the way the lighting is, there is an abundance of shadows and the blacks there are deep. There were no issues with crushing or pixelation that I could catch.

Blu-ray
The video is a 1080p AVC presentation that has an incredible look to it. Like the 4k UHD, the details are there from the jump with the close shots of the wedding. The colors in general have a bold look and push the format as much as possible. In one of the airport scenes, the edges of people can almost look too sharp but there is great contrasting that happens. The Blu-ray in general, like the UHD, has nothing but positives.

AUDIO QUALITY:

The audio is a DTS:x mix that works well with this strong soundtrack. Pretty much every song has a beat with deep bass and that includes the score by Danny Elfman. The overhead speakers do get some use but there are only a few moments with sound movement that jumps out at you. Most of them include the Audi that both Christian and Ana drive. The surround speakers do get some heavy use when the scenes are inside of cars or in scenes with busy environments. The dialogue is well privatized with the effects and the strong soundtrack.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

FIFTY SHADES FREED may not be as on par story-wise with the previous two but the release itself is superb. The picture is as clear as you can get and that goes for both formats that you get. The audio is amazing and has quite the presence with the fantastic soundtrack. The extras are ok but they may be better for the true fans of the series. I can recommend picking this up to round off your collection or if you want to see how the trilogy ends.
