Tomb Raider is a 2018 action-adventure film directed by Roar Uthaug, with a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons, from a story by Evan Daugherty and Robertson-Dworet. An American and British co-production, it is based on the 2013 video game of the same name, with some elements of its sequel by Crystal Dynamics, and is a reboot of the Tomb Raider film series. The film stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, who embarks on a perilous journey to her father’s last-known destination, hoping to solve the mystery of his disappearance. Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Kristin Scott Thomas appear in supporting roles.

THE MOVIE:

Alicia Vikander makes for an excellent Lara Croft, and I prefer her over Angelina Jolie myself. While the film may not have done as well as the studio had hoped at the box office, it still did quite well. I hope that for everyone’s sake we haven’t seen the last of this franchise and also that of Vikander’s role of Lara Croft. The ending definitely excites for part 2!

TOMB RAIDER is an action adventure with mystery intertwined that keeps your attention well enough to watch this all the way through. Some of the stunts and visuals are out of this world and only a few CGI scenes are a bit rough around the edges. Overall the film is is fun and executed pretty well and leaves you wishing for an Uncharted film that could make for a great double billing with TOMB RAIDER.

VIDEO QUALITY:

TOMB RAIDER releases onto Ultra HD Blu-ray with High Dynamic Range that showcases great depth in the dark levels which plays well on this film. There are scenes at sea in the dark that otherwise likely couldn’t have been as deep. Also many scenes on an island that play to the strengths of HDR quite well. Beautiful landscape shots, river shots, etc. Great video quality on this release.

AUDIO QUALITY:

One of TOMB RAIDER’s stronger points of it’s release on to Ultra HD Blu-ray format is that of the Dolby Atmos track. The DTS HD Master 5.1 track is grand in it’s own right but the atmos is mind boggling. Gotta love this genre of film with a well done audio track. Much to explore with the wild scenery, action, and adventure. Immersive audio with the front speakers and center channel handling the main load with nice surround from rears while your sub woofer will pack the punch to knock your socks off.
