Well here’s something unique in form. Panasonic has just announced the DMR-BR30 blu-ray player that utilizes an removable hard drive. It contains a 500GB hard drive available from Panasonic that records up to 450 hours of content. Not a fan of deleting stuff? No problem, once its full you can take it out and put in another.

Oh but it doesn’t stop there, the BR30 will also support BDXL discs which can lead up to a minimum of an additional 80 hours of video as well as being capable of burning regular Blu-ray and DVD!

Clocking in at $450 and each hard drive tacking on another $240 can make this unique beast quite expensive!

Earlier this week we reported on the Pioneer Blu-ray 3d player line coming your way, and today we report on the first ever Blu-ray car player. Yes, you read that correct. I remember when I was younger and it was all the rage to have as many screens in your ride as you could pimp out. (or possibly afford) So now you can get to stuntin’ in Hi-def! :p In any case, a trucker or those who go on long drives with the fam might find this more useful and be very interested in this new addition from Audiovox.

Specifically designed to be installed under a seat or behind the seats this blu-ray player can connect to any monitor via HDMI, composite, component. Power for the player comes from a 2-pin 12V connector to the vehicles accessory power source and boasts a full function IR remote.

I know, I know … if your not thinking “Why the hell would I need this?” You may be thinking “How the heck would this remote work from the front seat?” Well … The player also includes an 18-foot IR extension to allow for control of the player while its out of sight. The player is set to get a firmware update to boast wi-fi as well this year. So if your a trucker, you could be enjoying wi-fi netflix at the truck stop I suppose. Ships in spring for a retail price point of $349.99.

Straight from CES, earlier today we reported the newly revealed logo for Blu-ray 3D software and hardware and now we have word about the first 3D title. Remember, at the moment there isn’t any official press release, but didn’t seem to stop electronic maker Samsung. The electronics giant will be offering Monsters vs Aliens 3D, what’s the catch? (There’s always a catch!) Buy one of their 3D HDTVs, their Blu-ray BD-C6900, AND their active shutter 3D glasses! Yes, all at once. You don’t get them at once you don’t get the film as simple as that! All you have to do is give an arm and a leg, fun!

Hallelujah and Amen for all 3D followers. The 3D Blu Ray format has gotten its final specifications from the BDA (Blu Ray Disc Association), and anyone with a PS3 or a good collection of Blu Ray movies is in for a sigh of relief. The new Blu Ray 3D format will be viewable on your Blu Ray players and PS3s!

The new format will ensure full HD video to each eye (1080p), and here’s the catch, is powered by a Blu Ray codec that is already supported by all Blu Ray players. This pretty much means you can use your present ’2D’ Blu Ray player or PS3 to play the new 3D movies, and at 1080p no less. So, Avatar in 3D, at home, without an upgrade…looks possible.

So if you’re among those who have just upgraded to a Blu Ray player and built up a good Blu Ray disc collection, 3D is not yet another expensive upgrade. Just buy a 3D disc, pop it in, and you’re good to go.

And to really reassure Blu Ray users and gamers worldwide, Sony and the BDA have made it clear that 2D discs will play on 3D players, 3D discs will play on the PS3, and that all 3D Blu Ray fare will be compatible with any 3D screen – LCD, Plasma, whatever.

The format doesn’t just take care of 3D movies, but also provides for such things as 3D menus, 3D subtitles and 3D extras. The specifications have been made available to creators and content providers, so the first 3D Blu Ray releases, including Avatar, may be expected in 2010.

Every gamer worth his “final-level boss fights” knows who NVIDIA and ATI are. For the uninitiated, they’re the Coke and Pepsi of the graphics card wars., or rather, they were. Because not so long ago, AMD (the Pepsi to Intel’s Coke, remember?) acquired ATI, and became the Pepsi of two worlds – graphics cards, and processors. ‘Nuff tech said.

The news, however, is that AMD is doing exactly what NVIDIA promised yesterday. Yep, Blu Ray 3D for your PC. While NVIDIA has developed its own NVIDIA 3D Vision software package, AMD has tied up with CyberLink (of PowerDVD fame) to get the software part in place.

The standards, naturally will be different, but both based on the same Blu Ray stereoscopic 3D technology. To quote CyberLink’s CEO, Alice Chang, from the joint press release at which the news was announced,

“With the addition of stereoscopic 3D support for the next generation of Blu-ray discs, we’re ready to bring consumers an incredible new entertainment experience in the coming year.”

She went on to add that their preview with AMD at the CES would be “a taste for what’s in store.”

While Cyberlink called AMD a “a valued partner” for developing hardware that’s optimized to Cyberlink’s AV software, there’s still no news on which other partners will join them, if at all.

At the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), you can expect to see both of them duking it out like teen gamers at CounterStrike, for the right to sell 3D Blu Ray tech to you. Ah, such a beautiful world.

Lets say you have the right amount of RAM and the kind of graphics card and processor that ordinary mortals ( or even people like me) would dream of.

Let’s also imagine that you’ve been reading at this site, all about Blu ray’s 3D options, over the past months. You probably looked at the prices of some of these products and sighed, because you did pay a bomb for that gaming rig of yours, and it, quite simply, can’t play 3D Blu Ray.

Correction. Courtesy NVIDIA.

NVIDIA 3D Vision package, and the glasses!

NVIDIA’s 3D Vision software, and the accompanying NVIDIA 3D shutter glasses combine to allow you the pleasure of a 3D experience on your computer. Released early last year, it has been helping gamers the world over to experience 3D gaming, such as with last year’s Batman: Arkham Asylum game.

But coming early next year, a software update to the NVIDIA 3D Vision application will allow users with a beefed-up machine and 120Hz refresh rate monitors to get the same experience with their 3D Blu Ray movie discs. The first of a few 120 Hz 1080p monitors will be released in early 2010 by Acer and Samsung. NVIDIA has announced that the application will be compatible with most Blu Ray drives, and in case yours is one of the unlucky exceptions, just check the list of compatible drives that should be out soon.

Provided you get your hands on one of those 120 Hz babies (for which an exact release date and price will soon be announced) , and it all matches up, and NVIDIA can implement everything it has in mind.. in a few months, you’ll be the proud owner of a rig that can do not just 3D games, but also 3D Blu Ray movies, 3D web-content viewers, 3D picture slideshows, 3D Windows 7 and 3D Google Earth.

Seriously.

Stay tuned for more news on the “3D PC” front!

Are you into soccer? It doesn’t matter, really, even I’m not. But this bit of news is exciting even if you think ‘FIFA’ is a girl from the Bahamas. Especially if it was… *grin*

With the FIFA World Cup 2010 ready to explode into living rooms across the world next year, Sony and FIFA have come together to make it a lot more explosive. With Panasonic and Sony showing off their 3D TV muscle a couple of months back, LG last week, and Sky promising 3D channels by 2010, Sony has announced that the 2010 World Cup will be the first to be shown in 3D.

The idea is to shoot 25 of the matches in 3D, and then to produce an exclusive 3D film as well. And, no prizes for guessing that all that juicy 3D content will find its way into the good ole’ Blu Ray disc. This also means Sony’s VAIO laptops and their Blu Ray drives, Sony Blu Ray players, and via firmware updates, PS3s and PS3 Slims are all gonna get bumped up into the 3D portfolio. Don’t believe me? Hear out Fujio Nishida, president, Sony Europe, “At Sony, the 3D entertainment experience will not only focus on the 3D TV alone, but from 2010 will also encompass a range of 3D compatible products such as Blu-ray Disc players, VAIO notebook computers and PlayStation 3“. See?

With 6 months to go for the event in South Africa, it’s up to Sony to get the standards in place for the nascent 3D industry. With that taken care of, get ready to start respecting television all over again. To quote Nishida’s understatement, “3D will undoubtedly transform the way we enjoy content in the Living Room.”

Yeah, you bet.

In a move that is poised to elevate the Blu-ray™ Hi-Def format and provide consumers with the ultimate in convenience and viewing flexibility, Universal Studios Home Entertainment (USHE) announced the introduction of groundbreaking dual-format discs containing both Blu-ray™ Hi-Def and DVD versions of some of Hollywood’s most iconic films. An industry first, the new “flipper” discs will launch on January 19, 2010 with the blockbuster superspy thrillers The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, starring Matt Damon, premiering as individually packaged Blu-ray™ discs.

For the first time ever, consumers will have the ability to choose between Blu-ray™ and DVD formats, simply by flipping a single disc. With complete utility in one convenient package, the revolutionary medium can be used on any DVD or Blu-ray™ compatible player, game platform or computer, making it ideal for anyone planning to upgrade to Blu-ray™ at a future date as well as current owners of both Blu-ray™ and DVD systems. Each side of Universal’s flipper discs includes the entire movie as well as all available bonus features, with the Blu-ray™ side featuring exciting BD exclusives such as U-Control and BD-Live™.

“Universal’s flipper discs are the perfect way for consumers to future-proof their collections while still enjoying their favorite movies on all their existing DVD players,” said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “The flipper disc offers an easy way for viewers to convert to Blu-ray now or at any time in the future, confident in the fact they will be able to experience their home entertainment purchases in the highest quality picture and sound when they do.”

What is your thoughts on flipper discs? Like’m? Love’m? Hate them?
