200+ films so far unreleased on Blu-ray in the UK

Zavvi have so far released several exclusive SteelBook titles which were previously unreleased on the Blu-Ray format in the UK, and which only exist in Blu-Ray form in the UK as SteelBooks (opposed to a standard Amaray release). Such titles include Dick Tracy, The Rocketeer, and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

It seems that there is an untapped resource of titles out there which have as yet been unreleased in the United Kingdom on the Blu-Ray format (but which may have been released elsewhere, such as the United States or rest of Europe), which would make ideal candidates as future SteelBook releases, and at the same time allow these titles to have a long-awaited release in the UK - some of which are sequels to titles which have already been graced a SteelBook release, but where the sequels are somewhat absent from the Blu-Ray format in this country

At this point in time I would be grateful if the studios involved would at least release these films on standard Blu-Ray format, but if Zavvi feels the need to use this list as a starting point for future exclusive SteelBooks then I would also be happy!

Below is a list of film titles which are still awaiting a UK Blu-Ray release, of which many would be suitable as Zavvi exclusive SteelBooks:

I am happy to welcome any suggestions to add titles to the list, and likewise, am open to any criticism regarding any titles above which you may believe have had a legitimate UK Blu-Ray release (not including imported releases!)

One movie that is crying out to be released on blu ray is The Darjeeling Limited. That film would look awesome in HD. A Wes Anderson blu ray box set would be nice.

I've said so many times that a wes Anderson set should be released. I would love seperate steelbooks for the royal tenenbaums, life aquatic with Steve zissou, Darjeeling limited, fantastic mr fox, moonrise kingdom and grand Budapest hotel. I would be completely happy with all the DVD artwork to be used because with a glossy finish they will all look so colourful and vibrant. Only cover I would change is fantastic mr fox to the criterion release artwork. This needs to happen.
Forgot about Rushmore. Bottle rocket is my least favourite

We should create a thread with a poll including all wes films and see who would be interested

Also did not realise American psycho did not have a blu ray realease. I have it on DVD and would instantly purchase a steelbook version

This is a weird one that might provoke a "Whaaaa?" reaction from some of you, but I'd put 'Scooby Doo on Zombie Island' on that list. The animation is stunning yet rather disturbing for a children's movie. It was a direct-to-video movie in 1998, but other not so great Scooby Doo movies have Blu-ray releases (in the US) and I think it's blasphemy for Warner to have not restored this classic and put many of these out on the UK market. :)

Lol just had a little read up about and apparently does have a cult following due to it being darker and different. Also has a good reception of like 88%.
Might give it a go lol

You would have thought that American Psycho would have been a SteelBook in the UK by now!

Green Street is an odd one, as Green Street 2 and Green Street 3 have both been released on Blu-Ray, but not the first.

Updated the list with another huge batch of titles:

8mm (1999)
A Life Less Ordinary (1997)
Anaconda (1997)
Baby's Day Out (1994)
Bad Taste (1987)
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Bedazzled (2000)
Bedknobs And Broomsticks (1971)
Bicentennial Man (1999)
Dr. Who: Enemy Within (1996)
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
Hollow Man 2 (2006)
Fist Of The North Star (1995)
Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986)
Mannequin (1987)
Mannequin 2: On The Move (1991)
Millennium (1989)
Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993)
Sliding Doors (1997)
Solaris (2002)
Starman (1984)
Striptease (1996)
Stir Crazy (1980)
The 6th Day (2000)
The Cell (2000)
The Last Starfighter (1984)
The Legend Of Bagger Vance (2000)
The Pagemaster (1994)
The Philadelphia Experiment (1984)
The Philadelphia Experiment II (1993)
Titan A.E. (2000)
Valley Of The Dolls (1967)
Valley Of The Dolls, Beyond The (1970)
Vanilla Sky (2001)

While compiling this list, I frequently find myself screaming at my computer screen "WHY IS THIS FILM NOT ON BLU-RAY?"! The Blu-Ray format has been commercially available since 2006, so it's absolutely disgusting that some of these titles on the list have been neglected by the studios, especially the ones featuring major actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Tom Cruise!

I also noticed that a lot of titles seem to be owned by Sony (aka, SPHC / Columbia / Tri-Star) more than any of the other big Hollywood studios! Sony seem to be withholding a vast catalogue of titles from the UK market at the moment. Also, a lot of Sony-owned films which were released on Blu-Ray very early on during the HD war are now very difficult to get hold of, and are well overdue a re-release... Coincidentally, SPHC seem to be the least interested in releasing SteelBooks in the UK, having so far only released about half a dozen to date

Beyond Re-animator
A bittersweet life
Loaded weapon 1
Robin Hood men in tights
Death becomes her
Ghosts of Mississippi
Mobsters (Christian Slater)
Carbine Williams (James Stewart)
Major league 1 + 2 (although the first is region free from the US)
The super (Joe Pesci)

I would be all over The lawnmower man in a steelbook, ecspecially if it was the directors cut version.
Also I second Look who's talking 1 + 2 in a steelbook, aswell as both The Addams Family films.

When I first started compiling this list, I was aiming to find just 50 popular film titles which had not had a British Blu-Ray release. 50 soon turned into 100, which then evolved into 120+ by the time I came to posting the initial list! It now stands at over 240 titles - major titles featuring household actors, many of which are still featuring in annual blockbusters!

Why then are the studios reluctant to release many of these titles on Blu-Ray?

I can't believe I or nobody mentioned 'Midnight Run'. That film is well overdue a Blu-ray release in any country. It's a classic, still got the DVD somewhere boxed up

Edit: Holes (2003) too!

I love the Terminal, well I pretty much love any film with Tom Hanks more of his films need steelbooks.

The money pit, sleepless in Seattle, catch me if you can, that thing you do, you've got mail, a league of their own, turner and hooch, dragnet.

So many would make amazing steelbooks

Managed to restore the list to 215 from a Notepad file I had saved, but we are still missing over 30 titles which we had before the forum update (Not bad considering the update took us back down to 124 titles from over 240!)

Well done to the idiots who neglected to back-up the forum threads before changing software. This list was over 240 long, but has reverted to an earlier version. Days of hard research lost! I despair!

Oh man that sucks. For what it's worth all your hard work is appreciated as this is a great thread. It's also an excellent companion list to the most wanted steelbooks thread, so keep up the good work fella

The Darjeeling Limited has been released on Blu-ray in the UK. TMNT 2 and 3 have also been released. They came on the triple pack.

I think a lot of it must be down to revenue. Quite a few of these films would not sell well so they don't see the point in releasing them. There are quite a few that should have had a release though, especially when there is a US version already available. A lot of the time it is better to just pick up an import copy as you never know whether some off these films will ever get a UK release.

Bumping this thread back up to the top, as I feel it has been neglected slightly in the last few months

Are we taking any bets on what we think will be the next titles to be released on Blu-Ray from those in the above list? Are there titles you think will never see a Blu-Ray release?

It's surprising to see how many Disney-owned titles are in the list, considering how prolific they are at re-releasing some of their more well-known animated titles! You would expect at least one of the Freaky Friday films to have been released on Blu-Ray by now!

One less title, as Westworld is getting a Blu-Ray (and SteelBook) release on the 27th of October!

Now if only we could convince Warner Bros to release some more of their back catalogue on the Blu-Ray format...

What are the studios doing about catalogue titles in the UK? Most of my remaining DVDs are titles on this list and theres not many I've been able to replace with UK releases this year. I've given in and imported the US/DE releases instead.
