actually, it should have been the other way around, if you're doing the proper home theater, most of videophile would always prefer 2.40 :1 over 1.78: 1 (16:9)... you'd get more immersive form 2.40: 1 screen ... and this is the right way to watch movies...

I get it, I totally do. But when I put in a film on my 50" samsung curve, I just want the full screen to be used. I hate black bars.

Exactly my point. Waste of screen space. And even worse if the television can't produce crystal clear blacks.
I know, but we have to deal with it. I think they'll just release new set of TVs in the future to match the aspect ratio or the other way around; crop the image and re-release the Bluray so people will have to buy again. Everybody just wants your money. :greedy:
