Best/worst book to screenplay/screen adaptation?

Shouldn't we re-name the title so it covers both ways?

"The book was better than the movie or the other way around" or something like that? :)
 
I can't believe no one mentioned Fight Club. Even Chuck Palahniuk (the author) said something to the effect that the screenplay is the version of the book he wished he'd written.

And Full Metal Jacket comes close to being as good as it's source material (The Short-Timers). Though all of the best dialogue was ripped straight from the novel.
 
Always thought that Michael Crichton's Timeline could have been SO much better. The script was too rushed and some of the stars played their roles terribly.
