Sex, even of the kinky variety, apparently knows no boundaries and crosses all borders.

Fifty Shades of Grey” has become Universal Pictures’ highest-grossing R-rated international release with $338.4 million, topping the $330 million made by “Ted.” The erotic drama topped foreign charts for the third consecutive week, adding $36 million from 59 territories to its haul.

Globally, the film should hit $500 million next week — an impressive return on the $40 million Universal spent to make Christian Grey’s red room come to life on screen.

Calm down, people are into this stuff. You never seen secretary or shame (not that shame is about s&m but still extremely sexual) or nymphomaniac ?

Yeah I agee bad choice for steel but this is still a lot of certain peoples hobby (if you wana call it that)

I have been thinking of how secretary was a pretty good movie that dealt with the subject matter in a periphery

also no one says anything about these horror p*rn movies (Hostel and you could possibly even consider Human Centipede)

4.2 on IMDB? Ouch. Is it that bad? Though at the same time it's #1 on the MovieMeter

Even a turd of a film can make a lot of money with enough hype though and there was a lot of advertising around going to see it on Valentine's Day too, so I'm sure that helped the figure.

Plus the subject is considered risqué enough by some that I think it'll get viewings simply because they're curious about it.

Box office success doesn't determine the quality though. Is it a good movie? Is it worth an impulse buy?

The reason why this movie is so successful despite it's low rating on IMDB (which is not the best place to rely on rating), is because of the book, it's sold 100 million copies in the shortest amount of time of a any book series ever sold...people really got into the book, especially female audience, and it has a killer soundtrack as well...

From someone who read the book and loved it(books are always better) I was a let down by the movie as I expected more intense nudity scenes, I felt that the movie was rushed they tried to cram as much as they could in 2h, they would have needed an extra hour in order to be more true to the book without rushing and build up the intensity more slowly...

I've read some comments from some ninjas who saw it(without having read the book) and stated that it wasn't that bad, but true this isn't the greatest film...

I'd say it is worth watching leaving your expectations aside, I will watch it again. Into the second book now and it's even better than the first one...

already pre-ordered the FS one (and I would not be surprised if the FS one would get sold out but yet to see) and pre-ordered the HMV one... even though it wasn't the greatest movie, I personally feel it is worth a Steel. But not everybody agrees. Universal will sell plenty and they will make money as well on the steelbook market.

Well I watched this the other night purley because I'm a fan of films of this nature and I like secretary and shame etc and a friend of mine said I might like it because I haven't read the book, and I have to say I didn't mind it (this is coming from someone who was clueless about the story apart from knowing it's about Sex and had the odd sentence read out to me). It could of been a lot better and much more risqué but it wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be. Fair dos I understand people who are a fan of the book might not like it because the same person told me what was missing and I agreed that adding the stuff that was missing might of made it a bit better. Both the leads were ok (Dakota being slightly better) but I didn't like their chemistry.
Now I didnt know about his "play room" which I quite liked and that really interested me aswell as his "contract" and I also liked his obsession if you like but I don't think it's worthy of a steelbook but like others have mentioned who am I to say what does deserve it. I would actually purchase this for under a £10er but I also think this will be popular with customers who don't usually by steelbooks but also at the same time unless the artwork is risqué itself and descent then I can't see why those fans would go for this over the standard Blu Ray once it's released.
I also don't understand why there was protesters in London at the premier or why some people (mostly on here) get so touchy about this. At the end of the day she agrees to all the stuff in the film and also making her own demands and although I felt sorry for her character at times with the neglect it was her choice and could of left at anytime. I also don't think the younger generation will look at this and think this is how a relationship should be, there are many more films with more harsh relationships and abuse that can also pave that lifestyle.
Not saying that a few people might watch this and think "oh I want to do that" because people are inspired my loads of films and TV shows etc.
anyway I didn't mind it but won't be rushing to get it when it's released

The book is very poorly written from what I heard and also comes across that way in the film and we all know how up tight the majority of critics can be and that probably made critics hate it more. But how many times have you liked a film that critics hate? I can imagine quite a lot

That was their trick, Valentine's day and also three quarters of the felmale population loving the book

Box office success doesn't determine the quality though. Is it a good movie? Is it worth an impulse buy?

Completely agree, many films have been slammed but made huge money at the box office that usually spawns an awful sequel

It seriously sounds like I'm massively defending this film (and I am a little bit) but I'm actually more defending the nature of this film because it annoys me that some people act weird or freak out when it's a film about sex or s&m which in this day and age is normal and obvioulsy sex is natural. It's like people forget about all those micheal Douglas films back in the day or like @mllNY mentioned porn horror.
I'm just open minded I think and like a bit of kinky :)

The movie is so bad that it's takings dropped 74% in the US after it's initial first week, and a further 50 odd% the second week, word of mouth spread fast that the film is just absolute garbage. It has done well financially mainly due to the fact the first 4 days were sold out completely by those that read the book. If the film was actually any good it would most likely be nearing the billion mark by now.

hahaha true but I have to disagree, people again who say the book was poorly written are the same who just do not like this subject or feel offended...like I have said previously, what do you expect ? A Pulitzer Prize written Novel ? It's Erotism !!!!!!!!! and it is written in the style of a young adult book ie" Twillight and so on and I didn't find anything wrong with the book, it is supposed to be light reading and it is despite the subject. Yes I was intrigued about the Red Room stuff lol not my thing but sparked an interest in reading it... But I have notice as we both agree people who haven't read the book seemed to be more inclined to like the movie... but with the books and especially towards the end and in the second book it becomes more about the psychological/emotional relationship and I feel the film failed to showcase the intensity of this aspect.

When I finished reading the first book, my heart sank and I could not believe it that it was how it was ending, I was struck. Yet the ending of the movie doesn't grab you nearly like the ending of the book, it's not even comparable the level of intensity in regards to their interaction that leads Ana to leave (book Versus Film)...

Wrong!

I''m a MASSIVE fan of this type of literature and have an extensive collection of rare volumes by the Marquis De Sade and others. The book is utter rubbish, It's badly written to say the least. A 14 year old could most likely write a better book. The reason it sold was the explicit content only and there are 100's of books out there in that market all better written. This series of books were only successful because of the strong marketing campaign which had there not been one would soon have died a death and not sold at all. Women bought it in droves because of the hype and because it was the "in thing" those truly into this type of fiction stayed well clear.

Thanks for the detailed replies @Actarus and @Flloydo :)

I'm a lot more open minded when it comes to the topics I've heard the film touches on than most people I know, but haven't read the books so think I'll watch it on VOD or something when it's out to see if I'd like the Steelbook.

that is very well possible, but from me not having known anything about this subject in any books, it did grab my attention. I have to say though that towards the end of the first book the sex scenes were repetitive. I preferred the part about their relationship...but it can't be just marketing, if it didn't have a content to keep us interested it would not have sold as well, I am into the second book and loving it. It's a book to unwind before bed after a hard day...I like light reading stuff at night... maybe you know more about literature than me, so from your point of view I can respect how you view and feel about the books, but from my point of view which is totally different from yours I like teenage type written novels (The Mortal Instruments, Divergent series, Twillight Saga, etc...), something easy to read not having to think to just unwind...

The only reason i said poorly written is because when I did hear parts read out to me the athor seemed like she didn't have much of a vocabulary and also the girls I knew reading it who loved it also said it is quite badly written at times and gets a bit repetitive. Like I said I've not read the book so I cant 100% say if it's badly written but everyone I know has read it (including my mum) commented on the writing in that sense but they also all love it and had to read the other 2 books. Lol
I like things that are in ways badly written at times or the script of a film so I'm not having ago or calling you out as someone who like terrible books or anything. I can't really comment on the book, it's just what I hear from people around me who have read it. There are things that I think I well written like films or songs that's other's look at me and ask if I'm kidding, that's the beauty of individuality. Anyways ....
I agree that they didn't access the psychological side in the film which I tend to also like in films and especially with relationships (and with this relationship and considering how innocent she is the psychological side should of been major - that would of made it a bit better too)

I do agree with you about the erotism and what do you expect but I'll never read the book and quite happy with the film and I will at some point see it again.
Because I haven't read the book I didn't realise it was going to end like that and was a bit like "oh, I want more" lol.
But yeah I get annoyed with all these people moaning about it when they haven't seen it or because its sexual.
I want to know more about that other person. Was it Mrs Robinson?

Thats the main problem! the very fact that this is the first exposure millions of readers have to a genre thats been around 200 years or more, and the book is pretty much one of the worst, and that's what annoys me the most. Why weren't all these women already reading this genre? because before now it was seen as taboo and didn't have an Apple level marketing campaign making it "ok" to read it.

It wasn't written for the Twilight crowd, it was written for over 18's and many stores won't sell it to anyone younger. Twilight, Divergent etc are sold in the childrens section of books stores and marketed for mainly mid teens. 50 Shades is an erotic novel and would normally be placed in the section of the store most feel embarrassed browsing.

you get to know more about Mrs Robinson in the second book and it does get good at one point lol :hilarious: but yes this part alone makes the whole story for me in what you say about the relationship aspect that is not well developed for the movie

and if you wanted more at the end and believe me it wasn't as intense as from the book, when it ended I was in shock like I said...but luckily for book 2 hahaha
