Nah, you hate a lot of movies that are considered good by most people. And it's not just critically acclaimed films (Foxcatcher, Zero Dark Thirty, Snowpiercer), but films that audiences love as well (Whiplash, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, There Will Be Blood, Moon, Dredd) EEK!o_O Wish you were more vocal about films you loved!
Actually @satanclaus is an interesting viewer! He doesn't go with a flick just cuz its huge and a crowd favorite,
Nor does he have art house snobbery with smaller indie flicks.
I like that. Just judge them as they come.
A film's popularity should have no bearing on what you think of it.

I'll only get the 1/4 slip of this one. Hated the movie (not saying that it is a terrible movie, just really didn't like it) but I want my Plain steelbook collection to be complete :)

I was made to watch this by my girlfriend and had no expectations for it. Didn't think much of the main crew involved; but I was so impressed after watching it. Really excited for this release.

It must suck to have to spend money on a movie you hate...;)
(Maybe you can fabricate a faux-spine instead!)

For the record I thought it was fantastic. Don't know why almost everyone (except critics) thinks it's too slow. Is it because it was marketed as a thriller? If you watch a lot of trailers you can tell it wasn't really action-packed because they weren't really "action" shots that were used. I think because of Channing Tatum and Steve Carrell, a lot of people watched it that wouldn't normally watch "art" films (not that this is an art film, but many Criterion films are way slower than this with less story).

Anyway, I didn't find it slow, I was riveted. I had trouble buying Steve Carrell at first but as it went on that went away. He got lost in the role it seems. Channing Tatum was the real revelation. He was frighteningly intense. I also loved the cinematography, atmosphere, tragic and dark true crime story, and soundtrack (I was so excited to hear one of my favorite pieces of music, Arvo Part's "Fur Alina". I've always wanted to hear it in a film). It's definitely in my top five films of the year.

I'm thrilled that Plain Archive is doing a release. I don't know how they're going to top Zero Dark Thirty and The Master, but I also said that for The Wrestler and Melancholia.

Nothing wrong with a slow movie but a there is with a slow movie that has almost no character development, dull cinematography, poor script and directing without passion. Good performances by the cast yes but without much character development they (the characters, not the actors) will leave no impression whatsoever unfortunately. Anyways, I think it's great that there are people who liked this movie, the cast deserves it ;)

Sorry for the off topic :bag:

Strongly disagree about the script and directing (both of which were nominated for Oscars, the director won Best Director at Cannes, and the script was nominated by the WGA). As for the character development, it's based on a true story, but also, Channing Tatum's character develops a lot!
Compare him at the beginning and then at the end.
Steve Carrell's arc is similar to
Daniel Plainview's "character development" in There Will Be Blood - they start near the bottom and continue spiraling downward.

There will be very long discussion if I respond to this  (and more off topic :ohno:). Everyone looks different at movies :)

lol, I didn't dislike TDK, I just felt it was vastly inferior to Batman Begins. For the record.

It's simply that I like what I like.

You get me! lol

I'm completely open minded about films. I'll often go in with a notion of how I'll feel about it, but totally open to have my mind changed. It's what I did with Begin Again, for example. I was certain I'd hate it, but it really resonated in a lot of ways for me.

As a general rule of thumb for me, any film that is critically loved (whether it be by critics or the academy) tends to be something I'll hate. The exception this year being The Theory Of Everything, which I watched on a flight to Singapore and was blown away.

Anyway...

That's fine but don't insult people who do like them (like saying they're too afraid to voice their real opinion, you're the voice of reason, they have bad taste, they're snobs or followers).

lmao, it was a throwaway comment that was made moments before going to sleep. I was going to end it with a "lol" or a smiley, but was sure everyone would know it was a bit of a joke. Jeez, people need to chill a bit.

Granted, I do think that's the case a lot of the time, people are told it's fantastic so they just say that it is, but I'm sure people here are more capable of forming opinions than most people on the street. Or at least more so than the girls sat behind me on the flight in which i eventually watched this. They were looking through the film selection and saying "that film is SOOO good", "x is AMAZING in that film" etc, which was, in each case, followed by "no I've not seen it, but I heard that, so it must be".

:joy:
I like to remember that my opinions are not necessarily set in stone. I change my opinions on films from time to time on further viewing. Films I love the first time around, may fall apart under closer scrutiny.
And vice versa. Seriously- think of the films you loved as a kid. How many do you still hold in high regard?
And as an adult, movies you didn't 'get' as a younger person suddenly seem brilliant?
That's just life! People are very passionate about films they love-
but it behooves us all to remember that art is largely subjective. There is no right or wrong answer.
(Although, if you like torture porn, or Uwe Boll movies- you should seek a mental professional...:D)

I swear to god- I read on a talkback forum this guy talking about X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST
before it was released. He said "This is my favorite movie of all time. I can't wait to see it."
