ET was first on the set of Ghost in the Shell, where Johansson dished on what it means for her daughter to see her play such a bold character.

Freaked me out for a second then, I thought I was about to watch the actual trailer and it just cut out. I kept trying to play it not realising its like a 10 second tease :wacky:

Do you remember (or anyone else) the ghost in a shell PlayStation 1 game? with the white robot thing sliding and scating around. Was mad that game, I remember the demo and one of the first PlayStation games I seriously wanted. Looked amazing but I bet if I see it now it's just a white square block with 4 lines coming out as Legs

Looks extremely stylist.

But after Lucy I shall keep the hype meter down.

I hope people go into with a open mind and not wanting to hate it from the off, but I can understand why they would feel that way.

This is a strange one for me since GITS is my favorite anime feature. I really like Innocence as well. SAC and Arise much less so.

I've always been wary of adaptations in Hollywood because clearly it's so easy for them to simply snap up a brand and cash in. Ghost In the Shell seems to have been on the cards for years as well which gives you the sneaking suspicion they've been struggling for a long time to get the right balance of talent on board. Seems like a struggle that's only been confounded further by casting Scarlett in the lead. Fans have been quick to call it whitewashing and it seems to have immediately pulled the air out of the atmosphere for the film. You have to believe this is why they went with the approach of releasing those idents and most recently a featurette with the support of creator Mamoru Oshii before even a real teaser. They've worked hard to try and convince fans with brief clips that its got more than a passing resemblance to the real thing.

Here's the thing about the casting - in the original anime Motoko Kusanagi's cyborg body was never designed to specifically reflect her Japanese ethnicity. That's the nationality of the human being she was (or believes she was) before becoming a cyborg. She has has the exact same body type and face as the cyborg body that the Puppet Master inhabits. And that model has blonde hair... so it was clearly not designed to reflect a Japanese woman either. More important is the narrative function of their visual similarity. Likewise Batou looked more like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his cyborg form despite his Japanese origins.

Of course it's an easy target for fans who feel like they're losing something in the process of moving the property into Hollywood. But why not wait and actually judge the film for what it is instead of what it's not? Even trying to judge the trailer is pointless when you consider that they're all moulded in the same fashion these days. They had to bite the bullet and make it look like an action movie and it muddles the intent a bit when you consider the polarity between wanting it to look and feel like the 1995 film but actually act more like Stand Alone Complex. And yet if anything makes me hopeful it's actually Scarlett on board. When it comes to otherworldly entities (Her, Under the Skin, Lucy) she does just fine and seems to have a knack for picking interesting scripts.

TL : DR - I've been ready to hate it and show complete disinterest from the start because the original's so close to my heart but the negativity surrounding it seems unwarranted and I'll watch it with an open mind cuz it could be the silent hill of anime adaptations! :D

YES! Finally a game film that looks good

Well up for this and I really don't give a sh*t if it's a bit different the game story.

Man she looked so hot in that introduction. I love Scarlett. Ever since ghost town and then fell in love with her in lost in translation. I'm going to watch that tonight, it's been a while

It's based on a Manga/Anime feature not a videogame though there are several videogames of the series out there

Yeah I know, buts it's also a film from a game which we all know never works well minus the odd film, so that's why I said it

(Although I did put game story lol which was a mistake, I meant to put origin story)

Seeing the trailer got me in the mood to finally watch the original animated version... I wasn't a fan unfortunately, but then I've never been big on manga/anime anyway. Pretty sure I'll enjoy this version a lot more though... or at least I hope so!

Watch the live action Ghost in the Shell movie's take on the anime's iconic opening sequence, with original composer Kenji Kawai performing a new composition live on drums. At a press event in Japan, press were allowed to film this sequence during the live performance...
