Visually stunning but otherwise nothing groundbreaking and a predictable story (I never saw the original). Overall an entertaining escape for roughly 2 hours.

As a pretty big fan of the original movie and anime series, I liked the movie for what is was, and that was a loose live action retelling of the original anime movie. It's been some time since I've seen the original Ghost in the Shell (GITS), but it was definitely a much more cerebral show with great visuals and concepts. The new GITS is stripped of anything remotely cerebral but does have very stunning visuals and the world building within the movie was well done. I think the biggest fault of the movie was the simplistic dialog and not enough compassion for most characters for us to care about the stakes of the new story.

This new movie focus more on Major (Scarlett) as a torn character and is a much more personal story compared to the original anime movie. The new Batou was okay, but I think someone a little older with better screen presence would have been better. The visuals and the music are the highlights of the movie and I think Scarlett does a pretty good job portraying a conflicting cyborg character. The action scenes are solid, but nothing significantly better than the original. I think Michael Pitt as the bad guy was very good in his limited screen time and I wish more movie (i.e. Marvel) made villains as engaging as this his. Some of the shot for shot visuals from the original anime was stunning in this movie and I really enjoyed those specific scenes.

It's a shame this movie probably won't do well enough to warrant a sequel because I would be interested in seeing what else they could do with this world. I still think if some anime series got an HBO like TV series treatment, it would do really well. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Berserk getting a Game of Thrones treatment and Gantz getting a Westworld treatment. Maybe the eventual Akira movie will better break the wall of anime to live action movies, but I enjoyed GITS for what is was. I was GITS in 2D but at the Dolby Atmos theater and the sound was incredible FWIW.

Saw this last night and enjoyed the hell out of it! :woot: :notworthy:  I truly hope a sequel gets made, I want to see more of Scarlett Johansson wearing that thermoptic suit (it wasn't enough)! :hungry: The action was great, visuals were stunning, and I loved seeing scenes from the 1995 anime brought to life!

Saw it twice since the premiere. 2D and IMAX 3D. First impressions on first viewing were decent. I thought it was good and worth seeing, but couldn't enjoy it properly since I was trying to analyze the film instead of just watching it. Despite that I still overall liked what I saw and wanted to see it again to pick up details I might have missed and admire the stellar visuals once more.
I rarely do 3D, but I thought that for this film it worked really well and enabled be to connect more with its characters and setting. While not all scenes worked well in 3D, those that did were fantastic. As for the movie, seeing it again helped. Initially I thought it was above average

Now I think it's actually really good and close to amazing. I can't imagine the adaptation being much better than this, except maybe for the original extended more gruesome and philosophical cut that audiences for some reason didn't respond to well. Sure, the live film is different and it's not perfect. But I appreciate it for what it is and see the effort that went into making it. It's totally fine it's not an exact duplicate and it works on its own. It's a faithful introduction to the world for newcomers, yet it manages to respect the material and please fans with many nods that aren't there for the sake of it.

Casting was diverse, performances were fine, audiovisual aspect is almost top notch, there's enough action and humor and while it's true the story was altered and to a degree simplified, I don't think it hurts the film or franchise and as a fan of the original I welcomed their take. I would like for it to do well to get a sequel it deserves. You'd have to be really nitpicky and hardcore to rip the film apart, because the amount of real flaws is marginal at best. A few people will pretend it doesn't exist, a few will refuse to watch it, a few will hate it. And that's fine. But I would argue the issues surrounding the film were bigger than issues with the film itself - from the unjustified, hypocritical and overblown whitewashing and a dated release, it's after all an adaptation of a 20+ years old niche material, to the questionable marketing and overly negative reviews.

It could have done better, but it could have done due to above reasons a lot worse. $152M/$110M is not an utter disaster some are making it to be. Home video should help. If nothing else, at the very least it managed to introduce a whole new generation of people to a cult classic and prooved Hollywood can do it (almost) right.
