My major problem is this. 99% of the films being released are digital films which are usually 2k being upscaled to 4k. Even proper films, a lot of them are 2k being upscaled to 4k. So unless there is a radical rethink on what is being released in this format and soon, I just don't see me upgrading. I"ll stick to blu-ray thank you very much. Sorry to be a killjoy but the whole venture into 4k just seems haphazard at best with no real commitment from the studios.
100% agree with you. This is also one of the many reasons i've been thinking of for skipping 4K and waiting til 8K TVs comes out.
HOWEVER...I've noticed more and more 4K releases are hybrids now. They've shot the 'live-action' scenes in 4K, but the VFX were done in 2K and then upscaled to 4K for the 4K Bluray release. Combine that with HDR, and now there's little difference between original 4K vs upscaled 4K. Or at least, the difference is not so huge that you need to worry about it.
For example, Batman V Superman and Pacific Rim 4K Bluray releases have gotten fair share of positive reviews. BvS is 100% 4K release with HDR, and Pacific Rim is 100% 2K upscaled to 4K with HDR. Many reviewers were actually praising Pacific Rim, saying the transfer was well done along with great HDR.
So now, the question is, is 4K all about just resolution?
Now combine that with 4K TVs with full HDR (earlier 4K TVs didn't have HDR, and some had 'partial' HDR).
This is bad for people like us, because we like to stay on one side. Either give us proper 4K or we're staying away. But now the line is staring to blur, i think, and we're just sort of stranded in the middle...
...just food for your thoughts.
