It is with pleasure that I can announce to you steelbook fans something that has been in the works for a while. From Scanavo comes Blu-ray Fr4me.

FR4ME™ presents a new generation of packaging. Scanavo’s FR4ME™ is a stylish, collectable and unique new way to package media.

It is Scanavo’s designers’ aim to add more collector value to media packaging and with it‘s stylish design and creative choices Fr4me™ does not disappoint!
Fr4me™ is the first packaging which gives Blu-rayTM owners the choice to customise their pack with their preferred choice of artwork. Fr4me™ can even stand, unaided, in a horizontal position like a real frame.

It’s stylish, minimalistic looks have presented a major attraction to film studio Universal Pictures, who have commissioned it for the UK release of their Sci-fi blockbuster OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise.

Within its innate ability to house a range of artwork, Fr4me™ can accommodate media on a range of materials, for instance lenticular. There is a special physical closeness to the artwork for the owner as there is no plastic film covering. A multitude of creative options exist for film studios to make Fr4me™ ideal for any genre and title.

Fr4me™ comes in a wide range of standard colours and the durable ABS substrate from which the outer ‘frames’ are made adds an exclusive touch which further redefines Blu-rayTM packaging.

With Scanavo comes the natural reassurance of quality. Scanavo - the premium packaging specialists - have created something worthy of the quality of Blu-rayTM. In a still strong physical media market, Fr4me™ adds value back into packaging and is sure to kick-start a whole new community of collectors.

OBLIVION packed in Fr4me™ will be available at most major UK retailers.
More exciting options for Fr4me™ will be developed in the near future!

Fr4me™ is a patented media packaging by Scanavo. Heard first at Hi-def Ninja

I hope this flops badly. One of the worst 'collectors packaging' I've seen.

1. No proper spine (title)
2. Doesn't even stand/display as a frame
3. If you display it horizontally, the BD logo is sideways
4. Artwork even smaller than amaray due to the large plastic border
5. No extra artwork/slides included (so what's the point?)
6. 16mm wide? Thicker than an amaray yet there is no title...!

What the hell are Scanavo thinking with this crap? They should concentrate on making steelbooks higher quality again (thicker gauge) and offering more finishes (what happened to the idea of being able to stamp numbers into the metal?).

They should also concentrate on better quality control for steelbooks, too many are getting damaged pre-seal.

I do like the idea of being able to change artwork but it needs a rethink. The frame should be much thinner (I'd say no more than 5mm wide) the plastic frame needs a spine similar to a steelbook (maybe not as thick though?) and if they insist on a blu-ray logo - make it a sticker.

After watching that youtube video, it appears to be a hassle to change the art. I can't be bothered with the hassle of changing the art. I like the idea of changing the art, but I don't actually like the frame itself and the process of changing the art.

Im not convinced at all...I like steelbooks because (for the most part) we get different art, inside artwork and no ratings logos, this 'frame' looks like a backward step, nice that you can switch the artwork around but you just end up with the nice art on the outside and the ugly regular amaray cover art as the inside, ratings logos and all...not the most attractive inner artwork eh...Looks like a right faff to change the artwork too

Its a decent idea but looks very much like a work in progress, I cant believe scanavo had a meeting and agreed that this was a case ready to be put into production, surely a spine to identify the film on a shelf is a basic element to any kind of packaging if you intend to use it for multiple titles...

You gotta' have a spine with the title on it. Almost anyone that buy's amarays or movies in general knows that with storage space coming usually at a premium you have to store a good chunk of your collection with the spine out and if you cant tell what the movie is while its stored on the shelf among 100's of others.... well, yeah... :ugh::squint:

The design needs altering before any more of these cases go out.

If you don't want this to flop as a collectors item you need to put a spine on it. Use your head: collectors obviously are gonna have a lot of Blu-rays, but if they get loads of Fr4me cases and put them together, they're not going to know what film's in it without pulling it out of the shelf.

Scanavo need to include several art cards with the Fr4me cases, not just 2. That'd be cool because then it'll have more collectible value and also you won't have to have the outside artwork visible on the inside. You could fit 2 art cards into 1 slot to make it even more customiseable.

Drop the tapered frame and make it more square. You can still round off the edges a bit though. Scanavo claim it can stand upright without falling over but that's not actually true at all. Even a regular Amaray can't do that.

Perhaps make the frame out of aluminium instead of tacky white plastic.

And make the Blu-ray logo a clear sticker.

Basically, why not just make it a Steelbook with a hole punched on the front & back covers?

This will flop if they don't change it.

I received my Oblivion Fr4me yesterday, and I have to say I am not very impressed. I was almost sold on it after seeing the various videos, but after experiencing it in-hand I can safely say I was very disappointed.

The first thing you notice is how cheap it feels. It almost feels as if it will fall apart in your hand. Amaray cases aren't exactly the most rigid thing in the world, but the Fr4me case is even more flimsy. The two halves don't quite meet up properly. It almost feels like it was cobbled together by primary school children made with recycled junk than a professional (and supposedly future collectible) product

I can't quite tell what the artwork inserts are made of (laminated cardboard?), but they don't feel as quality as I had expected. Also, the rating logos on the vertical artwork are not attractive, and neither is the blue banner across the top. If this is going to be a viable collectible format, these two things have to be addressed for future releases

For those wanting to display this vertically, you're out of luck. It seems that Scanavo intend you to display these horizontally. However, the "lip" stand isn't very sturdy, and doesn't offer very much support. They would have dne better to have designed a casing with a stand built into the back like a picture frame, so that you can display the artwork like you would a photo. I also don't understand the point of being able to remove the back frame, as you're only ever going to have one face of the Fr4me showing on display at once. This design only really needed the front bezel to be able to be removed

Had the Fr4me casing been made out of the same material as SteelBooks, a proper spine, and a stand built into the back instead of that stupid "lip", it would probably have won me over straight away! Scanavo could have done a much better job of this and charged a premium for a quality product, but this is certainly not what I consider it be a quality product - On the contrary, I would rather buy the standard Amaray over Fr4me!
