From Amazon:

There are two types of companies: those that work hard to charge customers more, and those that work hard to charge customers less. Both approaches can work. We are firmly in the second camp.

We are excited to announce four new products: the all-new Kindle for only $79, two new touch Kindles – Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G – for $99 and $149, and a new class of Kindle – Kindle Fire – a beautiful full color Kindle for movies, TV shows, music, books, magazines, apps, games, web browsing and more, for only $199.

These are high-end products – the best Kindles we’ve ever made. Kindle and Kindle Touch have the most-advanced E Ink display technology available, and the 3G Kindle Touch adds free 3G wireless – no monthly fees and no annual contracts. Kindle Fire brings everything we’ve been working on at Amazon for 15 years together into a single, fully-integrated experience for customers – instant access to Amazon’s massive selection of digital content, a vibrant color IPS touchscreen with extra-wide viewing angle, a 14.6 ounce design that’s easy to hold with one hand, a state-of-the-art dual core processor, free storage in the Amazon Cloud, and an ultra-fast mobile browser – Amazon Silk – available exclusively on Kindle Fire.

We are building premium products and offering them at non-premium prices.

Thank you for being a customer,

Jeff Bezos
Founder & CEO
p.s. – Kindle Fire has a radical new web browser called Amazon Silk. When you use Silk – without thinking about it or doing anything explicit – you’re calling on the raw computational horsepower of Amazon EC2 to accelerate your web browsing. If you're curious, watch this short video to learn more about how it works.

LOL DB! People at work are hating me right now because they actually spent the time to answer the questions for the raffle. I guessed on everything and for the questions that required you to write an answer, I wrote "I don't know".

The Amazon UK site that the Kindle can be ordered outside of the UK. Perhaps you could just place a pre-order for this, at the Amazon US site? Not sure....

Trouble is copyright as Amz.com not compatible with Amz.co.uk for Kindle purposes. Well that's my belief whether it's right or wrong.

Interesting, I wonder why they have the site stripe encouraging you to buy it from Amazon US then. Maybe for the hardware, in case you'll be in the US, etc etc. But that seems a bit odd. Yes, the copyright and distribution rights management for printed matter is about as complex as for movies..

Launch in UK still to be decided for both Kindle Fire & Kindle Touch. To quote the guardian online 29th September 2011 "the higher price for the UK version reflects that fact that it is ad-free while the US version is supported by adverts". There is an almost exact price in $ becoming price in £ (as usual), but at least there is some reasoning behind it. We Brits, by and large, hate adverts whereas they are more common in US culture. Yes, a sweeping generalisation, but obviously the motivator here.

The article concludes that the Kindle Fire should be released in UK in time for Christmas.

My wife ordered a Kindle Fire for me for my B-Day. It's getting here tomorrow.

Can't wait... should be great for my video game walkthru needs and portable internet sports radio. And of course, checking HDN several times a day. ;)

Got my Fire a couple of days ago, and I love it so far. Can't beat $.10 apps. Downloaded Tetris and Asphalt 6 for $.20!

Kind of annoyed that this hasn't come out here yet in the UK.
My mum wants an iPad but not at that price so I have told her about the Fire. Just wish it would come out.
