New York - Barnes & Noble today introduced a full tablet version of the Color Nook at a press event here.

Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch holds the new NOOK Tablet
The Nook Tablet will carry a $249 suggested retail and be available in stores next week on or about Nov. 17.

Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch introduced the device at the chain's flagship store in Union Square, N.Y.

The Nook Tablet will have the same 7-inch screen size as the current Nook Color, which has also received a major facelift and a new, lower price of $199.

The Nook Tablet uses a 1GHz processor, and it has 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, with a slot for a 32GB SD card. The device weighs less than a pound and can play 1080p video. Lynch said the tablet will have nine hours of video viewing playback and 11.5 hours of book reading power.

It comes preloaded with Netflix and Hulu Plus apps. For music B&N has partnered with Pandora. B&N will also offer thousands of additional apps via the Nook app store, Lynch said.

Lynch went after Amazon's soon-to-ship Kindle Fire, saying there are no special offers on the Nook Tablet, referring to the ads Amazon has placed on some of its Kindles in order to subsidize a lower price. The Kindle Fire is priced at $199.

The Nook Color has been upgraded to include access to Nook apps; readers can now read in either landscape or portrait mode, and Hulu Plus will become available on the Nook Color in the coming months, the company said.

The recently introduced Nook Simple Touch has been given several upgrades and had the price lowered to $99.

The revamp includes a better E Ink display, improving page-turn times by 25 percent. Battery life has been extended, with about 60 hours of reading possible on a single charge.

Existing Nook Simple Touch owners can obtain these upgrades by getting the 1.1 version of the devices software at www.nook.come/update.

The improved Nook Simple Touch and Nook Color will become available next week, the company said.
