It looks like Pacific Rim 2 is moving forward today as Deadline brings word that Legendary Pictures and Universal PicturesPacific Rim 2 has found a director in Steven S DeKnight. DeKnight, best known for his work on Spartacus and Marvel’s Daredevil (and, of course, for guest hosting Most Craved), will make his feature film directing debut with the followup to Guillermo del Toros’ 2013 Kaiju showdown. Until now, it was believed that Del Toro himself would return to helm the followup. The Crimson Peak director just confirmed via Twitter, however, that he’s still closely involved with the project and that the plan is to “expand big”. Check out his tweets on the matter below:

Pacific Rim 2 was originally scheduled for release on April 7, 2017 before being pushed to August 4, 2017 and ultimately removed from the calendar altogether. In a statement, Universal declared they were “committed to having ‘Pacific Rim 2,'” but that the delay was needed so the “creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.” That seems to be exactly what is happening with the addition of Steven S. DeKnight.

Pacific Rim hit theaters in summer 2013 and grossed just $101 million at the domestic box office but went on to take in over $400 million worldwide. The original film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.

I'm quite happy that Pacific Rim is returning, too, but I'll be honest... it's really disappointing that GDT has stepped down as director. I can only imagine that it was some sort of stipulation after Crimson Peak bombed. Either way, at least it's in capable hands with DeKnight. I loved his work on Daredevil and Spartacus, plus he's one of the creative minds from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Crazy!!! I thought he stepped down from Daredevil to work on transformers... but looks like he got an even BIGGER F'n ROBOTS movie!!! haha

Sad that GDT isn't doing it, but now he has more time for other things... like Hellboy 3? (Dare to dream)

Same, man! If he's still involved, then I'll be happy. I just hope it keeps the same feel as the original!

And Franky!!! Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla 2, Japanese Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Kong, Jurassic World 2, and Pacific Rim 2 all within the next five years!!!

Actually, Legendary was just bought out by a mega-massive Chinese company, so that probably has a lot to do with the return of Pacific Rim, too.

Chances of Godzilla having a cameo @bloodsnake007 @tridon @Scary Hair ??? :D

I'd love to say that the chances are good, but I don't think it'll happen, bud. Godzilla and Kong are at Warner and Pacific Rim has moved over to Universal. Unless Warner/Universal are willing to get into bed together (or in this case, the ocean ;)), I think it'll only happen in our dreams, sadly.

Thanks for the tag @bloodsnake007 @Scary Hair :D

I knew it was coming. Like I said before, if Del Toro wants it to happen, it'll happen.

If that's the case, I hope he's passing on Pacific Rim to finally make his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness with Tom Cruise.

OR! Could you imagine if he's making one of Universal's new Monster movies?! Holy crap! GDT on Frankenstein would be the most amazing thing ever!

I thought both films are distributed by WB :grumpy:

After Godzilla, Legendary moved from Warner to Universal. Warner held the rights to Godzilla and Universal held the rights to Kong, so Legendary somehow talked Universal into giving Kong over to Warner. So now all future Legendary movies will be Universal besides Godzilla and Kong which will stay at Warner. Pacific Rim is now held by Universal. It's a pretty crappy situation. If Godzilla would've went to Universal instead of Kong going to Warner, we would've had all three monster franchises under the same roof.

Pacific Rim Anime Will Create a Neural Link to Your Childhood

With Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures‘ Pacific Rim 2 having recently found a new director in Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus,Marvel’s Daredevil), it won’t be long until we get another healthy dose of Kaiju/Mech showdowns, but until then fans of Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 blockbuster can make do with a funny short film. Directed by Jeremie Carreon, it’s a title sequence for a non-existent anime version of Pacific Rim, right down to the cheesy ’80s music and Gigantor-style Gipsy Danger. Check out the Pacific Rim anime below!
