So I wanted to start a thread dedicated to just bluray steelbooks with poor bluray transfers that include poor picture quality and or poor audio quality.

This list is ONLY for STEELBOOK BLURAYS not regular blurays. This way we know which steelbooks have blurays inside them with poorly transferred content be it poor picture quality or poor audio quality.

Im really-really hoping people will contribute to this thread and the mod's will hopefully make this thread a sticky please!

Reason I have started this is that I have regular amaray versions of movies that I now have on steelbook and since I don't keep doubles for the most part I don't wanna end up selling or giving away the regular amaray if it has the better transfer over the steelbook. Also this thread would serve purpose for those that just want the best transfer and obviously as an informational list for steelbook fans when making future steelbook purchases.

We can mange a list in the first post that will be continually updated for neat organization. When submitting a possible bluray steelbook for this list please try and remain objective and consider the technical aspects only of the transfer. Were not trying to put transfers on here that for the most part are okay or ones with a minor flaw here and there. Were trying to put transfers on this list that are just outright poor. If you object or think a bluray steelbook has made the list in error please post up and voice your reason why it is in error. We would like to keep this list as accurate and objective as possible.

When posting a bluray steelbook with a poor transfer please specify the following:
-Title of bluray steelbook
-Country of bluray steelbook
-If multiple releases then which release is the bluray steelbook
-A small description of what is wrong with the transfer

THANKS HDN! :)

I will start:

1) Fight Club DE. Poor picture quality and audio. The regular amaray version is much-much better.
2) Gladiator Worldwide before the recall. Way too much DNR used. Studio did a disc swap program for a new re-mastered transfer. All new releases since have the re-mastered disc.
3) Resident Evil 1 CA (Worldwide?). Just looks like an upscaled dvd picture quality wise.
4) Highlander UK. Varying degrees of picture quality from scene to scene.
5) Shogun Assaisan UK. Poor picture quality.
6)Red Cliff NL. Theatrical cut is shorter then other releases and poor audio.
7)Casino Royal DE. Poor audio quality (Dolby 5.1)
8)Tears of the Sun DE. Poor Audio quality (Dolby 5.1)
9)Faster DE. Poor Audio quality (Dolby 5.1)
10)Dusk Till Dawn CA. Poor picture quality
11)Sucker Punch DE 1st edition. German audio problem with popping noises. Disc swap program offered for replacement by studio.
12)Flash Gordon UK. Poor audio and picture quality.
13)Blade Worldwide. Wrong aspect ratio & poor picture and audio quality.
14)Kick Ass IT. Poor audio quality for English (only Dolby 5.1)
15)Equilibrium CA. Wrong aspect ratio. Cropped to 1.78.1 when it should be 2.35.1
17)The Patriot DE. Poor audio quality (Only Dolby 5.1 for English)
18)Polar Express CA. Poor picture quality (newer remastered releases have fixed this) and loss 5.1 audio quality
19)Superman Returns CA Poor picture quality (newer remastered releases have fixed this) and loss 5.1 audio quality
20)Memento CA. Newer re-mastered version was releases with better picture and audio quality
21)Akira UK. Poor picture quality
22)Batman 1989 CA. Poor picture quality
23)Shooter DE. Only has DD 5.1 audio
24)Dances with Wolves DE. English audio has slight issue in that it is 7.0 instead of 7.1
25)Last Samurai CA. Only DD 5.1 audio

27)XXX DE. Only DD 5.1 audio (PCM 5.1 on UK disc)
28)Letters from Iwo Jima DE. Only DD 5.1 audio (True HD on USA disc)

The Canadian From Dusk Till Dawn transfer is a poor one, but I do believe it's the best available Blu-Ray of the movie. Not only do the other 'From Dusk' releases feature even worse transfers, but they also don't include the special features that the steelbook does.

There's a few on the list which definitely should not be on there.

Highlander - Perfectly fine transfer.

Batman (1989) - Isn't this the Warner release? If so, their discs are the same worldwide and my UK disc looks brilliant.

Some of the others on the list look suspect but I down own them so cannot say for sure. I think some people are not understanding the difference between a bad blu-ray transfer/encode or just how the film is (such as Highlander which the original film source is quite patchy, but the blu-ray shows the film as it is perfectly).

Ummmm Batman 1989 had a great transfer when you compare it with its age. No idea what tv you been viewing this through :S

I havent seen it through any TV FYI. How about reading the thread first before replying. Its a member contributed list and if someone wants to dispute a title in the list you can do so

Per the first post in the thread...

If you object or think a bluray steelbook has made the list in error please post up and voice your reason why it is in error. We would like to keep this list as accurate and objective as possible.

Ninja Scroll SB (manga UK) is apparently in 4:3 EEK! due to the transfer being true to the original VHS edition, which was later stretched for the dvd release.

Only ordered my copy yesterday as this and the higher price put me off, but when my copy (£12.79 :scat:) comes, i'll update on picture quality if nobody else hasn't already.

Predator (all versions) - Ultimate Hunted and Gutted Dial 11 DNR edition

Spiderman Trilogy (Germany) - Lossy English audio

Robocop (UK, 1st release) - Not remastered

Withnail and I (UK) - Poor Picture Quality

Faster (DE) - Lossy English audio

Der Patriot (DE) - Lossy English audio

Batman Begins (all versions) - Way too soft Picture. Some say it was shot that way by Nolan but many agree that it was heavily filtered. Encoded at just 13 Mbps.

V for Vendetta (all versions) - Same as above but not that much filtered. Some low pass filtering applied.

Please don't put 28 Days Later in the list as it was shot that way.

A vast majority of the Steelbooks have featured discs with same old transfer.

Superman Returns CA Poor picture quality (newer remastered releases have fixed this) and loss 5.1 audio quality - This is incorrect. The re-release featured lossless audio though there is lot of confusion about it. PQ is rubbish. Australian version featured both PCM and TrueHD.

A few more which are truly awful in almost all aspects:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid UK

The Great Escape UK

The Battle of Britain UK

A Bridge Too Far UK

As far as I understand it, though this relates directly to the Uk releases, there are no better transfers currently available elsewhere - which in no way excuses their poor quality BTW!

just to be clear, the Canadian steelbook features a new disc with an updated transfer and bonus features. the original "better" release was a barebones effort.
