Official announcement from Star Wars.com:

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

Saw it tonight!
I did a back to back double feature of The Force Awakens and this in IMAX.

I gotta say I really enjoyed this! It was beautifully shot! like WOW!
...But watching them so close together ...TFA is a better film (for me).

BIG SPOILERS BELOW:
The Rey & Ben team up fight scene was freakin incredible! And the moment right before with the fate of Snoke was so well done.
Also the Luke vs Kylo Ren fight at the end was almost just as good.

The Casino planet thing didn't really work for me and was probably the weakest part of the film.
I wonder if Justin Theroux's character is actually important in the future? Or does that not matter now?
I thought they were going to reveal that del Toro's character actually WAS the guy they were looking for, but nope. just an a-hole.

I'm really curious how they are going to handle Carrie Fisher for the next film...
That part where ship blew up I thought for a second that was it for her and this was the way they cut her out of the film. But nope.
Also, really sad that there is no more Luke!? I guess he could always be a force ghost?

I worry now with no more luke or snoke we wont find out any of that backstory? WHO THE HECK WAS SNOKE!? Where are the Knights of Ren?

Hopefully JJ can answer these questions.

My SW Movies rankings:
5 - 7 - 6 - 4 - 8 - R1 - 3 - 1 - 2

Something that i forgot about that I'd like to talk about...

*another big spoiler (sorry)
YODA!
How freaking awesome was it that he was in this? and also that he wasn't cgi was amazing.

I always wondered what Obi-wan meant when he said "I'll become more powerful then you could ever imagine". And seeing that Yoda (even as a force ghost) could summon up all that power was crazy!

I have to see this again before I pass an actual rating.
But... my initial reaction was... mixed.

I enjoyed the plot, the pacing, and the arcs the characters underwent.
The tense set up for the film and the proverbial "ticking time bomb" plot was unique and felt characteristic of a Star Wars movie while still being fresh and dynamic.

But I swear to god, Disney- this isn't a Marvel film. I didn't need you to quip Star Wars up in a way that made it feel as intrusive and annoying as Guardians of the Galaxy.
The dramatic and serious nature of the film was constantly derailed by the constant need to throw in a ridiculous amount of jokes. And it did nothing but completely take me out of the film.

So, just saw this and don't know what I thought of it to be honest. This is no Empire Strikes Back that's for sure. I'd love some others who saw it to give their opinions and see what they thought of it also. There's some stuff I want to get off my chest so here goes........

I feel like I'm wanting to like it more than I actually did. Something feels really off about this for me. First off the 'humorous' bits felt way out of place (the whole 'comical' discussion between Hux and Poe at the start for example was more like something out of Spaceballs!) and Luke throwing the lightsabre over his shoulder when Rey handed it to him was just fan servicing after the way The Force Awakens ended and felt a bit cringey. And WTF was going on with Leia flying through space like Superman? Seriously? I don't know if that was a last minute re-write to give her less screen time following her sudden death last year, but it was ridiculous. If she's that powerful why didn't she train to become a Jedi knight?

This is the longest running Star Wars film to date at two and a half hours, but the whole subplot involving Benicio Del Toros character served no real purpose and could just as easily have been axed entirely from the whole movie and wouldn't really be missed. And the movie wouldn't have felt as dragged out in the middle. That whole Casino planet sequence felt forced and when we briefly re-visit it at the end I was confused. Who was that kid supposed to be? Again just felt like they didn't know how to end and tacked it on there at the end.

No mention of The Knights Of Ren or what became of them after making a rather big deal of them in the first movie. And what was Snokes story? Andy Serkis publicly claimed he wasn't a Sith. So what was he then? Where did he come from? Nothing on this.

Another major question from the first film that was a major let down here also was Rey's parentage. Turns out they were nobodys. Peasant traders who just traded her for cash and never returned. That's it! It feels like JJ Abrams set up all these things from the first movie but they couldn't be arsed addressing them in any great detail in this one.

I guess that's what happens when studios constantly interfere and switch between directors and their personal visions.....

Took the words right out of my mouth mate, everything you said was exactly what I felt. Best film since Empire my arse, I don't even think Empire was all that great. Return of the Jedi was always my favourite.

People ragging on the CGI Yoda in Phantom menace then we get this abomination..and why would Yoda show up to provide guidance to Luke when his own father Anakin Skywalker was a force ghost at the end of ROTJ, We never get to see Luke's reaction to Han's death. Just so much wrong with this film.

You'd wonder why they didn't bother to answer any of the questions set up in TFA and, in hindsight, if this had anything to do with Colin Trevorrow departing the third installment and being replaced with JJ?

I never thought Rian Johnson should have been picked for a Star Wars movie anyway. He had one moderate hit with Looper and suddenly he's fookin up Star Wars!

Force awakens gets bashed in hindsight cause it was "fan service" and was "nostalgic" but worked overall as a movie for me. All the original characters felt like extentions of their parts in the original films, Luke in this movie was a douche bag and didn't feel like that much of a great jedi (not that I ever thought was when compared to the ones in the prequels).

The bulk of this movie was some ships trying to escape from some other ships with random subplots going on elsewhere. Timeline wise it's all over the place too. All this time should have passed from TFA to this movie judging by where most of the characters now are yet when it goes to Rey and Luke its literally right from where the first movie ending. Shoddy film making. They make such a big thing about her parents..all these theories, even scenes and dialogue devoted to it in this movie just to lead up to a throw away line that kills it all.

In the end, Kylo Ren isn't established enough for me as a threat of big bad and thats after movie 2, there's no real stakes with him going into the third movie

Now I'm getting anxious. So far it's been poorly received by audiences, although TFA got some stick (rehash of 'A New Hope' etc) the overall response was very positive.
Ugh, what are Disney trying to do with all the Marvel-esque 'gags'. I've got a feeling that'll be enough for me to cancel my pre-order. Apart from the Captain America sequels I'm not a fan of Marvel at all. I'm not saying the characters need to be stone-faced or anything, but, just, err you know let Star Wars be Star Wars, not a parody.

Saw this last night and going to it again tomorrow.

I loved this movie. Sure it has its issues but I personally enjoyed it alot more than I dislike it. This is a completely different Star Wars movie. I welcome change because its trying to do something new. It has some really great moments and not so good ones. I'd happily rewatch this again than Force Awakens. I can't wait to see some WEA steelbooks.

here is a review for them that did not like it but as to some reasoning why, for me disney seem to be wanting to take it in a new direction for the way going foward it seems to alot is a marmite film you either love it or hate it.
but as luke says in one key line which most have missed (let it die let it all die) and was from what i can see the direction to intend how it goes forward before it gets rebuilt in the next film and your choice is take it or not. but disney have bought it all up for the long term and mark hamill most def does not want to be in this forever which most people have seemed to have missed.

personally i liked it, the casino planet bit was over extended abit too much but overall was a good film but disney tried to please too many fans with not enough answers covering everyone wanted out of it otherwise we could have ended up with a 3hr film had they did.

anyway review below if you didn't like it

Did everyone spot Garreth Edwards cameo?

I did, thought that was funny. Then I read Rian Johnson cameo in Rogue One as one of the troopers in the firing chamber of the Death Star. Garth's cameo was payback. Its nice to see directors having some fun like this.

I saw it on Saturday, and to be honest, left very disappointed. I left the theater with more questions than answers. Here are MY THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS. It's ok if you disagree...

Lots of Spoilers FYI...
I'll start with the things I loved:

1. The Elite Praetorian Guard - Snoke's chamber was badass, and the guards were awesome. We'd never really seen the guard fight before which Made it so exciting and was by far the best scene in the film (except the sudden death of Snoke! Why Rian? Why?!)

2. Poe Dameron's character development, I think this was the directors biggest strength in the film, he was awesome at developing Poe, but sacrificed too much time of the film to do it, which made it bittersweet at the end.

3. Awesome Animal liberation subplot - I absolutley loved the porgs, vulptices and fathiers! Kudos to Rian for making this a pro animal film. I'm not a vegan or anything, but I really enjoyed that. Read more about it HERE

Now to what I did NOT enjoy:

1. Too many Plot twists - Rian Johnson tried too hard to give us plot twists, that he forgotten to really tie in to the overall universe. Fin fails his mission to break the code, Making us think Holdo was bad, Snokes death (don't even get me started on this!! This was a risky move that didn't pay off in my opinion, at least, the way it happened), Luke being a chump (more about that) among others, felt he wanted us to be more surprised and have that WOAH moment, than he did want us to UNDERSTAND what was going on. I believe, he did a disservice to the film by focusing more on Poe (even though, I enjoyed his growth in the fiilm preparing him for his biggest role in the final chapter) , Finn and the rebellion which sacrificed developing our main characters Ben and Ray. This, to me, was a huge blow to the film and left too many questions, which leads me to...

2. More questions, than answers.... Why did the island have those ancient Jedi books (Only partially answered)? What was in the black hole? What happened to Ray in the cave? Why did the tree needed to be burnt down? Why did we only see Yoda? Where the heck is Anakin, and Obi Won? If Ben is so linked to his grandfather, why doesn't he appear to him??!! What did the [Obi Won] voice that Ray heard in Force Awakens mean to her?? Who was Snoke???!!! Seriously??!! Who the heck was Snoke?? Why was he so powerful, more than any other Sith?? Why was his face damaged, how did he corrupt Kylo? And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

3. Too much fluff - After watching 'The Last Jedi, one can see where the franchise is going, they are going to a point where it's beyond Jedi / Sith and more about Good / Evil and ultimately, Kylo / Ray. The final film is the culmination of a 9 film story arc, so I feel we needed more answers to the questions above more than finding a code breaker and telling us about a planet where there is a casino. Yes, yes, there was a very import character introduced at the end shown on that island, but, it was more about big reveals and twist, than it was about continuing the story started in 'The Force Awakens'. I felt there were too many scenes that could had been easily cut, giving them more time to tell us more story.

4. Luke Skywalker - Luke was the biggest disappointment of all. I hated his use in the film. I am guessing this is on purpose though. He did make me laugh, which is actually Hamill's strong suit. But I felt he was more annoying here than he was in A New Hope, which I thought was impossible. So much time was spent on that island with Luke that was useless and just annoyed me.

Overall, the film is stronger than all 2 of the prequels combined. But I feel that unless the final chapter is 4 hours long, a lot of these questions will be left unanswered, which bugs the heck out of me.

.....OH WTF WAS THAT THING ABOUT BLUE MILK???!!!

NOTE: I don't write for a living, so I apologize for any typos and grammar mistakes :)

I enjoyed it. Went in with exceedingly low expectations. Didn’t like TFA on the second viewing which hampered my enthusiasm for this.

Apart from some pretty big issues (Poe Dameron being a total dick was a major one for me), I liked more of it than I disliked. Some of the moments that link back to the original trilogy were absolutely wonderful.
