It's confirmed!

Filmmaker Bryan Singer has signed on to direct the latest film in the X-Men series, X-Men: First Class.

Singer informed reporters at the Avatar premiere last week that he will be directing the flick, stating he's "very excited" to be back on board with X-Men.

Rumors have been swirling around Hollywood since October of Singer's return, but no one was sure whether the director would be on board for First Class or the upcoming Wolverine sequel.

Patrick Stewart Won't Be In X-Men: First Class

Bryan Singer is set to make his return to the X-Men universe soon by directing the upcoming prequel X-Men: First Class. The film tells the story of how Professor Xavier first formed his school for mutants, and examines the earlier days of his relationship with Magneto. So you’d think to do that, they might need Professor Xavier himself. There’s only ever been one, and he’s always been played by (in one form or another) Patrick Stewart. But not this time.

TrekMovie caught up with Stewart at an Australian Trek convention where he revealed that he doesn’t expect to be involved in Singer’s franchise prequel. It doesn’t sound like he isn’t interested since he adds that “working with Ian again would be wonderful”, rather it’s that he doesn’t expect to be needed.

That actually makes a certain amount of sense. While Stewart himself never actually seems to age, he’s also incapable of de-agingin. Since this is a prequel Professor Xavier will have to be considerably younger and, let’s face it, the franchise’s past attempts to digitally de-age Stewart have been something less than a rip-roaring success. It makes sense that they’ll have to recast him, even if it’s hard to imagine anyone else ever capturing the character as perfectly as Patrick Stewart did.

Bryan Singer to Produce X-Men: First Class

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=64592

Just one week ago, director Bryan Singer and producer Lauren Shuler Donner were talking to the L.A. Times about Singer's affinity for the X-Men characters, which convinced him to direct X-Men: First Class. According to Deadline's Mike Fleming, Singer's obligations to begin production on Jack the Giant Killer, his 3D version of the classic fairy tale for Warner Bros., will have to take precedence and Singer will now only be producing X-Men: First Class.

According to Fleming, Fox is already in talks with a few directors they've short-listed who may be able to start production on the proposed first movie in a new prequel trilogy as early as summer or fall for a 2011 release, while Singer is locked into making the other CG-heavy movie through his contract with Warner Bros. Some may remember that WB snagged Singer to direct Superman Returns, preventing him from directing X-Men: The Last Stand.

Exciting Details On The Plot Of X-Men: First Class!

Now that the entire cast has pretty much been announced, more details about the plot of X-Men: First Class are emerging, and it sounds effing AWESOME!

We're hearing that the film takes place in 1960's reality where there is James Bond-esque 'retro-future technology,' with John F. Kennedy as President and Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X strongly featured in the backdrop.

The story will focus on Magneto and Professor X's friendship and its subsequent deterioration, and Xavier will neither be bald nor wheel-chair bound - although it will explain how that happens! We'll also get to see costumes that are inspired more from the old comics than the recent films!

Although a young Cyclops and Jean Grey will not appear, we've got it confirmed that Kevin Bacon will be portraying the villainous Sebastian Shaw, and January Jones WILL be The Hellfire Club's White Queen, Emma Frost!

Has The X-Men: First Class Villain Been Revealed?

"Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not arch-enemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men."

Armageddon could definitely be the villain, as there have been two characters in the Marvel Universe that have gone by that name. They are…

- An artificially-created offspring of Apocalypse
- Ruler of alien "Troyjan empire"/antagonist for The Hulk

X-Men: First Class Getting The Twilight Treatment?

X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn has revealed that there is going to be a lot of "teen angst" in the latest installment of the X-Men franchise - just the sort of thing that gets Twi-Hards all weak in the knees.

Matthew went into some detail about how the relationship between Magneto and Charles Xavier would play out, before ending with:

"It’s got a lot of teenage angst. The Twilight girls will like it."
