Yet Song of the South turns up on BBC2 UK the odd time uncut. Go figure.... I never understood the problem with it as it's no more racist that Gone with the Wind yet you would think from comments on reviews it makes Birth of a Nation look like The Magic Roundabout......

I never really saw it as racist myself, just a film about a cheery black man singing songs to the local kids.

song of the south is defenetly racist and it was already racist back in time when it was released and faced huge protesst in the 40' as well . only because it's more subtle as birth of a nation doesn't mean its less provoking. i mean it clearly shows slavery as a great and normal thing and that remus and his wife are totally fine with being slaves. Than the storys about rabbit who wanted to run away from the plantation to live with his father makes it even worse. the message is don't run away from slavery, don't try to be a individual person. you better know your place as a slave and go with the flow. the whole movie makes me want to puke.

but i think they still should release it, maybe with some commentries or a documentation about the real life as a slave on a plantation. this way they could do few things right instead of just denying there own history.

None saying it's not racist. I personally don't see the difference between it and the likes of Gone with the Wind. They both do the same thing as do a lot of films from that period. At the end of the day it's censorship and people have the right to judge for themselves the pros and cons of a film........

you are right about the censorship but a lot of people still deny the racist attitude and message of the film so i think it needs some kind of commentary or documentation included for the education value. here in germany the book from hitler 'mein kampf' came recently out. but it also includes commentrarys so people don't get lost in propaganda and are really able to make there own mind which is often not possible by watching/reading material which is cheering onesided for something without having a counterpart to clash with.

Song of the South will become Public Domain in 2039 and Disney might decide before that date to release before they lose the copyrights of the film if they don't then anyone after that date can release it on DVD/Blu-ray

OK, spoiler alert maybe, but by 2039 I think we'll be WAY past DVDs or Blu-rays :D.

Though FilmArena still won't have released Dredd by then.:p

That's correct Disney decided not to allow any release of the film on DVD or Blu-ray they took the decision themselves to withhold this movie from the public and is very unlikely that will change until later date see note below

Am aware, hence the 'it'll never happen'

plus, cant they just renew the copyright when its expires?

Classics may come back next year..in meantime they are working on something else neat in next few months...

So I guess this is what zavvi meant by 'something else neat': http://www.zavvi.com/offers/disney/big-sleeve.list

Interesting idea, though definitely not for me. I'd rather they finish the steelbook line personally. With this new format, and no precedent for how well it will sell, I can see them releasing their top-selling classics and then going quiet, leaving people without an opportunity to complete their collection. The format seems a bit cumbersome too, especially if it's designed for display. But I can see why some people might go for it.

If they're taking the time to release 12" boxes, they should at least include a laserdisc with it!

The big sleeve thing is interesting, I imagine it is probably due to the recent enthusiasm for vinyl but I don't think it is something I am interested in personally. The artworks look pretty cool though.

Oh dear!!!

I hope this don't take off.
Yeah I collect vinyl but I don't want giant movie vinyl style sleeves!!!

I'd only be interested in the guardians one tbh but I'm not going to help this idea by buying it.

Hopefully it fizzles out and they carry on with the steelbook line
