DIRECTOR APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION

The enormously wealthy and emotionally remote investment banker Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) receives a strange gift from his ne’er-do-well younger brother (Sean Penn) on his forty-eighth birthday: a voucher for a game that, if he agrees to play it, will change his life. Thus begins a trip down the rabbit hole that is puzzling, terrifying, and exhilarating for Nicholas and viewers alike. This multilayered, noirish descent into one man’s personal hell is also a surreal, metacinematic journey that, two years after the phenomenon Se7en, further demonstrated that director David Fincher was one of Hollywood’s true contemporary visionaries.

Disc Features:
  1. New, restored digital transfer, supervised by director David Fincher and director of photography Harris Savides, with original theatrical 5.1 surround theatrical soundtrack, in DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition
  2. Alternate 5.1 surround mix optimized for home theater viewing, supervised by sound designer Ren Klyce and Fincher, in DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition
  3. Audio commentary by Fincher, Savides, actor Michael Douglas, screenwriters John Brancato and Michael Ferris, digital animation supervisor Richard “Dr.” Baily, production designer Jeffrey Beecroft, visual effects supervisor Kevin Haug, and visual effects producer Robyn D’Arcy
  4. An hour’s worth of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and film-to-storyboard comparisons for four of the film’s major set pieces, with commentary
  5. Alternate ending
  6. Trailer and teaser trailer, with commentary
  7. PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic David Sterritt

Finally, The Game will get the treatment it deserves! I'll throw away my UK release as soon as this arrives :D

Hi there fellas!
This may sound as a stupid question so forgive me for it, if necesary :

What exactly is "criterion" ? Apart from a differnt cover / edition ... is there anything that makes "criterion" special?

Criterion is a company that releases remastered editions of films from various studios under licence. They take a lot of care in the re-mastering process and add very interesting extra features to their discs, such as commentaries by experts in movie history, archive TV shows and film documentaries related to the movie. There is usually a booklet enclosed with essays and other information about the film on the disc. Because they produce the films under licence in the US, they are forced to lock them region A.

Hope that helps!

Also, with a Criterion they give high bitrate encodes and usually most of the extras are in HD too (where possible). Not only that but many releases also have 'inside art' (i.e. sleeve is printed both sides).

I understand now the hype about these criterion titles, tho.
The Game had a poor conversion in the regular release so this looks like the good one, then. Thanks for the replies guys!!

Just watched this last weekend for the first time in years and forgot what a thrill ride it was.

Transfer looked great, two thumbs up on video quality.

Yah I got the Criterion edition too and watched it with a group of (me+5 other people).

Surprisingly, 2 people in our group had never even heard of it.

I had seen it twice myself but it had been a good 10+ years. Of course, we all enjoyed it immensely. For those that haven't seen it, you must.

But beware, this movie will jack you up. It's David Fincher. He also did Seven and Fight Club so that should give you a frame of reference.
