"From District 9 to Whiplash to Deadpool, many proof-of-concept teasers have been good enough to push a greenlight from studios, but The Leviathan may be the mother of them all.Academy

Award-nominee Ruairí Robinson (Fifty Percent Grey, The Last Days on Mars) has just dropped this 3-minute short that pitches The Leviathan as a full-throttle sci-fi adrenaline ride through the clouds. Do yourself a favor and check it out below!

Here’s a synopsis for the film, which takes cues from literary sources such as “Moby Dick” and “Dune”: “By the early 22nd century mankind had colonized many worlds. Faster than light travel was made possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species mankind has ever seen. Those that take part in the hunt are mostly involuntary labor.”

Robinson, perhaps best known as the first director attached to Warner Bros.’ live-action Akiraremake back in 2007, used assistance from Irish Film Board/Bord Scannán na hÉireann to complete this tease of what he and screenwriter Jim Uhls (Fight Club, Jumper) envision for The Leviathan. He has also shared on Twitter concept art (see above) by Jim Murray from a creature design by Jordu Schell, one of the principal designers of the Na’vi for Avatar."

Looks very interesting.
The monster animal thing reminded me of the giant flying fish creatures in avengers

Crazy! Looks amazing. I wonder how much these "Proof of Concept" videos cost to make? ...That couldn't have been cheap.

actually they do not cost that much. of course you can spend huge pile of cash on anything ... but you won't have to.

good programmer, couple of cheap cameras and green wall to project...

It's happening! Simon Kinberg and Neill Blomkamp have just come onboard to produce the film!

From ComingSoon:
Last week, we were among the first websites to enthusiastically write-up director Ruairí Robinson’s stunning sci-fi proof-of-concept short The Leviathan. Now, according to Deadline, prolific writer/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Cinderella, “Star Wars Rebels”) has come on board to produce the film along with writer/director Neill Blomkamp (with whom Kinberg produced Elysium and Chappie) as executive producer.

That’s a fairly formidable team, apparently just a few of the big name producers who courted Robinson after The Leviathan blew up the internet with nearly 2 million views across Vimeo and YouTube, impressive for a project with no studio, name talent or IP attached to it.

Kinberg’s cache at both Fox and Lucasfilm increases the likelihood of Robinson’s project finding a studio home, which it will need considering the epic, effects-heavy nature of its 22nd century story of involuntarily drafted pilots who hunt giant whale-like flying creatures through the skies. Jim Uhls (Fight Club, Jumper) has already penned the screenplay.

Blomkamp (age 35) and Robinson (age 37) have very similar career trajectories in that they both come from effects/animation backgrounds. They were both attached to make their feature debut on major franchise tentpoles (Halo and Akira, respectively) before being cut loose by studios and diving into their own self-generated material based on shorts (District 9 and The Leviathan). Robinson did make one other feature previously, 2013’s low-budget sci-fi horror film The Last Days on Mars, starring Liev Schreiber, which only grossed $24 thousand dollars in the US.
