Hi everybody! This is John at Avalanche Software. We’re hard at work finishing up Toy Story 3: The Video Game, due for release on June 15th. Toy Story 3 is much more than your average movie tie-in game. The game gives players two ways to experience Toy Story 3: Story Mode and Toy Box Mode, a sandbox style of gameplay set in the Toy Story universe.

In Story Mode, the player plays as Buzz, Woody, and Jessie, each with their own unique play style, to play through eight action platforming levels. While not a complete retelling of the movie plot, the player will visit some of the places, and meet some of the new and classic characters that are in the film. We take the player to some totally new places as well. Also in Story Mode, we’ve stashed all of our collectibles. The collectibles, when found, allow the player to unlock new toys for the Toy Box.

The Toy Box is a totally different experience from Story Mode. Here we put the player in an open, non-linear environment and allow them to play with Andy’s toys any way they like. The player is free to complete missions for different characters, customize the people and buildings, race in various vehicles, and much more. The more adventurous and creative you are, the more you will get rewarded. I encourage you to unleash your imagination in this mode of the game.

In the Toy Box, the player can play as Buzz, Woody, or Jessie. I am happy to announce that exclusively on the PlayStation 3, you can also play as Zurg! Zurg has many of his own unique missions. Whether it’s driving around in his own custom vehicle, or blasting everything in sight with his tri-gun, players can help Zurg achieve his singular goal of eliminating Buzz Lightyear, or just do whatever else they’d like.

I’m also excited to let you know that Toy Story 3: The Video Game will be compatible with PlayStation Move. It was cool working with Sony and this new technology to create downloadable mini-games designed specifically for this new motion controller. So, come Fall, there will be even more ways to play with Toy Story 3.

Now, check out our Zurg exclusive trailer and game screens for a taste of what you can do as this dastardly villain, and don’t forget to watch out for Toy Story 3: The Video Game in-stores, June 15th!

A video for Toy Story 3: The Game has been released by Disney, and in it, the Toy Box mode for customization is shown a bit.

On the PS3 end, Toy Story 3 will support DualShock 3, SIXAXIS, and Move when it is released June 16 and June 18 in the UK and US, respectively – although Move won’t be out yet.

The game is also coming to Wii, DS, PSP, PC and Xbox 360

Toy Story 3 Puts The Power Of Creation At Your Fingertips

The PC community has spent years tailoring their own experience in their favourite games using mod tools to create scenarios they want to play, rather than scenarios the devs want you to play.

Just Cause creators, Avalanche Studios, are looking to do the same with their upcoming Toy Story 3 movie tie-in title. Not only does it boast authentic and true to-the-film visuals and animations, but Toy Story 3, due in June, also includes a “toy box” mode, that is set to empower the user with the chance to do whatever the hell they please, as shown in their latest trailer.

With the obvious target audience being the juniors of the gaming world out there, I somehow believe that this adorable trailer might just sway a few of the more experienced gamers. You know, the ones that have an affinity to create, explore and customise.

Toy Story 3 is out on June 15th in North America.

Why you might actually want to play Toy Story 3
No, really! This is not your average movie game

"Is anyone surprised a new Toy Story game is on the way? There’s a new movie coming out, after all, so a coinciding game is practically required. But here’s something you may not expect: A reason to care.

Yes, you, Johnny Hardcore. How the hell is Pixar going to grab a gamer’s attention during the Halo: Reach beta and on the eve of a new Mario game? By doing something none of those other slipshod movie licenses have ever even attempted before. “Playing with toys” is taking on a whole new meaning…

288ccbc.jpg

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Toy Story 3 just happens to star the most beloved animated film characters of our generation. What kind of monster doesn’t have a soft spot for Woody and Buzz Lightyear? If you’re capable of reading this text, you’ve probably spent more time with Andy’s toys than he has, and for older nerds, they hold a deeper meaning. Not only did Toy Story revitalize the modern animated film, it changed the way people talked about games.

Following 1995, any time a new console was announced, gamers and the press had one question: Will it look like Toy Story? 90% of post-Toy Story articles about games like Donkey Kong Country dropped Pixar’s name, and best of all, everything but Command & Conquer abandoned full-motion video cutscenes. Yet Toy Story’s legacy never seemed to benefit its own games. While I know myself and a few you of you carry fond memories for early Toy Story games, polygons and sprites weren’t up to the task of visually representing the characters, and that’s exactly where Toy Story 3: The Video Game succeeds.

qsa908.jpg

It should go without saying that the characters look closer to their cinematic counterparts than ever before, but there are smaller, next-gen nuances that’ll warm the hearts of fans who appreciate them. These aren’t the slippery, weightless game heroes most movie cash-ins toss about lazily. Buzz moves with all the recognizable confidence of a plastic Space Ranger, whereas Woody retains the strenuous, exaggerated movements that come from having arms with the consistency of noodles. And Bullseye… watching Bullseye run was honestly heartwarming.

What can I say? As a fan, touches like that mean a great deal to me, but that’s not even close to the what makes Toy Story 3 look like a remarkable cut above any of its contemporaries. In the afternoon we spent at Pixar, developer Avalanche Studios spent a great deal of time acknowledging where exactly movie licensed games fall short: Rigidly adhering to the plot of the film.

Simply taking moments from a great movie and turning them into bland, extended linear missions is tired, and we all know it. Oh, Toy Story 3 will have story campaign, but we didn’t care to see it, and they didn’t care to show it. (HOWEVER, we were told that the meta videogame opening from Toy Story 2 is playable in the game, which is ridiculously cool. AND being the lucky bastards we are, we got to see the opening of Toy Story 3! Without spoiling anything, let’s just say that it’s a colossal fantasy sequence tailor-suited for a great gameplay experience.)

Toy Story 3’s biggest appeal is Toy Box Mode, an open world you can customize to your heart’s content. It starts out in the Old West, and gives Sheriff Woody an opportunity he’s never had before - to be an actual Sheriff. As you take down you dastardly banditos hellbent on ransacking the town, you’ll gain money. And this is where things get interesting. You can start adding buildings… which then attract more familiar characters and townspeople… who then offer you branching missions. The more you do, the more items you can customize. And the more you customize, even more gameplay opens up which you can tackle at your leisure.

2z4ftch.jpg

Double jumps, dash attacks and projectiles make for a solid little platformer, only now the developers are working free from the film narrative of the film and basically letting you play in Andy’s brain. You’re looking at hundreds of objectives - hidden treasure, heroic rescues and high altitude puzzles, just to name a few - that branch from the breezy decisions you make. You start out buying buildings, outfits and weapons, then eventually vast new environments, like Zurg’s space fortress as well as a haunted land of demonic toys created by sadistic tinkerer Sid from the first Toy Story… which you’ll then travel to and from with unlocked vehicles. Oh yeah, and Bullseye.

We couldn’t believe it, either, but Toy Story captured not only our attention, but our imagination. The Toy Box mode alone looks like it’ll offer a crap ton of value. The very idea beautifully embodies everything that makes Pixar and Toy Story special. Toys are only as fun as what you, individually, do with them. There was even a magic goop that could shrink or enlarge objects. To what purpose? No idea really, but it certainly symbolizes the game’s approach of presenting you with a billion things to do whatever you want with.

Toy Story 3 is a no brainer for the kids, but taxpaying Pixar nerds are in for a real treat, too. Playing as Woody, we got to use the iconic Luxo Jr. ball as a weapon, and were then told that the in-game store will also feature content from the entire Pixar universe! Wall-E, The Incredibles and Cars?! We were told “yes” on all counts. "

Toy Story 3: Pixar and Avalanche Software Q&A

We’ve shown you the PS3-exclusive character, Zurg. We’ve given you our full hands-on preview. We’ve even given you a peek inside Pixar Studios.

Now there’s only one thing left to do: talk to the developers of Toy Story 3: The Video Game! The PlayStation.Blog participated in a roundtable that included the film’s director and senior production staff from Avalanche Software, and we’ve highlighted the best exchanges below.

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="437" height="265" id="viddler"><param name="movie" value="http://www.viddler.com/simple_on_site/bc1769c6" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="flashvars" value="fake=1"/><embed src="http://www.viddler.com/simple_on_site/bc1769c6" width="437" height="265" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" flashvars="fake=1" name="viddler" ></embed></object>

Movie-based games have a mixed track record. What will make Toy Story 3 work well as a game?

We think it’s successful because Avalanche Software tapped into something great — the fundamental idea of play, of kids at play. It’s something we’ve done in all three of the movies, where we’ve seen Andy playing with the toys. This free, unbridled, silly play that’s exhilarating to watch. In Toy Story 3, we decided to go into that world and see what play time is like from a toy’s perspective. Avalanche Software tapped into that early on with this notion of the Toy Box Mode, which was inspired by the beginning of [the TS3 film] and what it’s like to be inside one of those play times. — Lee Unkrich, director, Toy Story 3

The whole idea of working in a kid’s imagination is something that you can build a good experience out of. When you’re playing a game, or playing with toys, you’re doing two very similar things. Another thing that allowed us to break the mold was the amount of time we had to work on the game, two and a half years. We had the amount of time you need to test it, refine it, and iterate the game to make it as good as gamers expect. We pushed ourselves. We felt that our initial pitch was a creative risk, but throughout the course of making the game we took a lot of technical risks, making sure that the engine was top-notch and that everything looked good. Towards the end, as Pixar finished up the film, we started having daily reviews with Pixar animators. So in a way, Pixar quality was being infused by Pixar. — John Blackburn, CEO, Avalanche Software

I’ve been making games for 15 years, and I’ve made quite a few film titles. We never got a good lead time. We have a lot of pride in what we’re trying to do, but we never had the ability to make the game we’d like to make for those films. In this case, Pixar has allowed into the process much earlier than anyone else. It was two and a half years ago, and so we could be more adventurous, take some risks, and come up with the Toy Box mode. It gave us a lot of freedom. – Jeff Bunker, art director, Avalanche Software

I remember leaving Avalanche Software’s pitch for making the game, and we were so excited because the Toy Box idea was so strong. That’s key at Pixar: if the idea is good, we’ll figure out the design and the details. Everybody loved their take from the get-go. — Bob Pauley, production designer, Pixar

How closely does Toy Story 3: The Video Game follow Toy Story 3 the film?

We wanted to tell a story that hit on the high points of the film and lent themselves naturally to gameplay. We didn’t want to wedge gameplay into the narrative to advance the plot from point A to point B. We created a structure where the game is kind of a retrospective of the movie. We aren’t trying to tell the whole story, but re-live parts of it and linger in certain scenes for a little longer — Andy’s house, Sunny Side Day Care, and so on. Story mode became a companion to what we consider the “meat” of the experience, the Toy Box mode. That’s where we allow you to play with Andy’s toys the way you want to play with them. Story mode definitely has a beginning, middle, and end, and it follows the movie. But the ending scene of the film is not the ending scene of the game, per se. – Jason Katz, story editor, Pixar

How does cooperative play work in Toy Story 3: The Video Game? Are there any team-based moves?

Yes, absolutely. You can pick up and throw other players in single-player or multiplayer. Buzz can throw Jessie up on a shelf, for example, to get to areas you normally couldn’t reach. You can do it in Toy Box mode, too. You can do separate missions, you don’t have to stay together. One player can go off and do ten missions while the other player is doing missions. Then you can come together and solve puzzles together. –Mike Thompson, creative director, Avalanche Software

4563716417_1fddd7cee0.jpg

Final question…does the Buzz Lightyear video game from Toy Story 2 appear in this game? Is it playable?

Yes! It’s all about capturing the emotion of the experience. In the movie’s version of the Buzz Lightyear game, you fly down to the planet’s surface, battle against all these robots that Buzz blows away, and then then a boss fight. So that doesn’t quite work. We wanted to take that experience and translate it into something a little bit longer, something that made more sense for gameplay, but remains authentic to the feeling you got when you saw the Buzz Lightyear game in Toy Story 2. Great pains were taken to make it feel…right. — Jonathan Warner, senior producer, Avalanche Software

Toy Story 3 dated for UK

Disney Interactive has announced that Toy Story 3 will be hitting store shelves across the UK on July 16.

The game arrives in the U.S. roughly a month earlier on June 15, while the movie itself hits UK cinemas on July 23.

Toy Story 3 features a story mode that adheres closely to the events of the film, chronicling Buzz, Woody and the rest of the gangs exploits as Andy prepares to up and leave for college.

Meanwhile, there’s also a Toy Box mode to plough through, which offers a sandbox style adventure encompassing many of the series’ iconic characters. Furthermore, the PlayStation 3 version of the game will be compatible with PlayStation Move via a series of downloadable mini-games.

Toy Story 3: The Video Game Has PS3 Exclusive Playable Zurg

Buzz Lightyear's evil father, Emperor Zurg will feature as a PS3 exclusive playable character in Toy Story 3, complete with his yellow ball dispensing arm cannon.

As a response to his all too brief screen time in Toy Story 2, the Toy Story 3 development team decided to put Zurg in the game even going so far as to give him his very own car with hood-mounted cannon.

Playing as Zurg looks like fun, pinging yellow balls at who or whatever gets in your way.

Toy Story 3: The Video Game is due for release mid-July. Take a look at the PS3 exclusive Zurg trailer.

Collectors Edition PS3 Exclusive?

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board has recently updated their website with a rating for Disney-Pixar's Toy Story Collector's Edition, stating only the PlayStation 3 as the platform.

The ESRB rated the collector's edition of the game as "Everyone 10+" and stated the following in their description of the game:

"This is an adventure game in which players control various characters from the movie Toy Story 3. Gameplay involves platforming, puzzle-solving, and completing missions in "open-world" environments. Some levels require players to shoot lasers or projectiles at enemies in frenetic combat: a character runs through alien terrain amidst a shower of laser fire and explosions; boss battles depict frequent laser and cannon fire, causing frequent and fiery explosions; and from a first-person perspective, players can use a laser turret gun to shoot flying plush characters. In one sequence, players can strike Stinky Pete, causing him to make a flatulence sound."

The ESRB usually rate all versions of each game when they do a listing, but there have been rare instances when they've rated the game as a separate listing for a different console, which is why this is still a rumor at the moment.
