Welcome to my Marvel collection! This is by far the largest collection that I own. My King Kong, my Pacific Rim, my TrollHunter... all of those are peanuts compared to this one.
My time as a Marvel collector goes all the way back to when I was just a toddler. My Dad collected comic books as a kid and he had two brown paper bags -- those old ones that you'd get at a grocery store -- that sat in his workshop that were just filled with old comics from the '60s and '70s. Every night before bed, my Dad would read me one of his old Archie comic books. He had superhero ones, too, but I couldn't see those until I was older.
When the right age came, my Dad pulled out his Marvel comic books. There was no DC to be found in his collection and this is why I probably grew up predominantly as a fan of Marvel comic books only. Amongst his collection was one Amazing Spider-Man, one Invincible Iron Man, one Fantastic Four, one Incredible Hulk, a few of The Mighty Avengers and a few Captain Americas. His favourites, though, were Silver Surfer, Daredevil and Thor. He had tons of these! He'd read those comics to me every night and I was in absolute heaven. I was fascinated and overwhelmed by these larger-than-life heroes.
My Dad's three favourites continued to be my favourites throughout my childhood until I was around the age of 10 or so. Then I began to drift and discover my own favourites.
I'd read a little bit of Spider-Man... I'd even dabble a bit with the Distinguished Competition's Batman and Superman and Image's Youngblood, Spawn and Pitt... but I was always drawn to the more obscure characters of the Marvel Universe. Darkhawk, Sleepwalker, Adam Warlock, Nomad, Morbius, Ghost Rider, Deathlok... all of these slightly unpopular characters were the ones that I wanted to read about the most. Then there was Wolverine and the X-Men. These books seemed completely obscure to me. Mutants? That was just wacky. Plus, my Dad never collected X-Men at all, so I had no idea who these characters were.
I always connected to Wolverine the most. I don't know why. Before he was super-popular and starring in every single Marvel comic book every single month, he had his one ongoing and starred in maybe two X-Men comics per month. He was Canadian and a complete outsider alongside the rest of the X-cast, so maybe that's why I was connected to him.
While Wolverine #44 was the first issue that I ever purchased, it was Wolverine #86 where I began to collect the character's ongoing title on a monthly basis... and oh, did I stick to it.
I quit collecting Wolverine's ongoing adventures last year (my bookend is the Origin II mini-series) due to life, mostly. I'm older, married... money needs to go elsewhere these days and comics aren't as cheap as they used to be. My taste in comic books has also changed, too. Up to that point, though, I purchased every single Wolverine ongoing comic book EVER as well as every mini-series, one-shot and variant cover. It's the collection that I'm the most proud of; no doubt about it.
While my comic collecting has slowed down, my Blu-ray collecting has only begun to rise. Naturally, I love collecting Marvel's films now.
In this thread, you'll see my entire Marvel Blu-ray and DVD collection. You'll also see some of the action figures and comic books that are important to me (I have thousands, so I've had to be careful with my hand-picking).
Please leave feedback. I'd love to chat comics with any of you!
Enjoy!
