Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote weekend estate. But the family reunion goes awry when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack or if the attackers are inside or outside the cavernous, creaking house. All they know for certain is that nobody is safe.

“You’re Next” slashes and hacks its way onto Blu-Ray from Lionsgate presented in a 2.35:1 1080p AVC transfer and looks very good.

Detail is brilliant. Facial hair and lines, the detail on the animal masks, clothing details and more are seen with superb definition. Being largely set indoors, interior lighting sets the mood well and appears as natural as an everyday home would. Skin tones appear natural as does the copious amounts of blood that graces the screen. Colours are quite soft as a whole with nothing being too over powering. The darker nighttime and outdoor scenes are also very good with no detail being lost on the screen, but the real stand out is the blood. It’s a real deep blood red that looks very realistic. Very little to no grain at all, and some of the style of filming is quite ‘shakey cam’ to try and give off a more realistic effect, but this works with the film and doesn’t become too distracting. Very little to complain about here really, but with the settings that the film is in the colours that are on screen aren’t particularly vivid or stand out material.

Overall a very good transfer.

Lionsgate have provided just the one track on the disc which is a decent English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

The DTS-HD Master Audio track is great and has been mixed brilliantly. All speakers are used to the full effect. Dialogue comes from the front centre speaker with great clarity, and nothing is lost within the movie. Front speakers pick up all the noise going on around you, as do the rears lapping up all the background noise which make up a track that really immerses you into the film. You hear everything, whether it’s punching, kicking, hacking, slashing or pounding someone over the head with a meat tenderiser! Throughout the whole movie the score is quite haunting which builds momentum as the film progresses and adds great atmosphere to the film. The very 80’s synth score is fantastic, and really blasts through the speakers during the final act of the movie. LFE is very prominent in the track pounding through the sub in the more action parts of the film, whether it be foot chases, punching and kicking, or the sound of an axe whacking into the side of someone’s head.

A very strong and decent audio track to mirror that of the transfer.

English SDH subtitles are also incuded.

On the disc we have the following extras –

* Audio Commentary with Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett
* Audio Commentary with Director Adam Wingarad, writer Simon Barrett and actor’s Sharni Vinson and Barbara Crampton
* ‘No Ordinary Home Invasion: The Making of “You’re Next” (HD, 11 mins)

‘No Ordinary Home Invasion’ is a short making-of featurette that delves slightly into the making of the movie with interviews thrown in with some of the cast and crew of the movie. Both audio commentaries are a good listen and offer some good insight into how the movie was developed, but the second commentary with the Barbara and Sharni is a much more easier and laid back listen.

Unfortunately not the largest amount of extras on the disc, I would’ve liked to have seen the making-of be a bit longer and more in depth as the film in my opinion warrants it, maybe have some deleted scenes thrown into the mix and a trailer or too also. However, fans of the movie will no doubt be pleased with what’s on the disc.

“You’re Next” was one of those movies that I wanted to see in the cinema but unfortunately missed during its theatrical run here in the UK. Having this land through my letterbox, it was in the Blu-Ray player within minutes and I kicked back to watch what I thought was a thoroughly entertaining horror movie.

The movie was made in 2011, and did the film festival rounds back then (‘Toronto Film Festival’ and ‘Fantastic Fest’ in the US in 2011, and over in the UK in 2012 at ‘Fright Fest’) before getting a theatrical release in the UK in 2013. I hadn’t read much into the production or details of the movie, only knowing that it was a home invasion style horror movie. Whilst I found the film to be nothing really new, I did find it quite a good and different take on the genre. I don’t want to say too much about it in case I spoil anything for anyone. All I will say is what happens in the movie is something you don’t really see too much in these type of films. There’s plenty of gore, violence and blood thrown in for good measure, filmed in a way where if it’s an instance where you don’t see the impact you certainly feel it!

“You’re Next” seems to be one of those movies that certainly divides opinions, you either love it or hate it. I’m pleased to say I’m in the ‘loved it’ camp. The movie is nothing ground breaking nor is it anything new, but in my opinion its damn good fun and is a must see for all fans of horror.

The Blu-Ray shouldn’t disappoint fans of the movie, but it would’ve been nice to have seen some more extras included. Aside from this, the disc features a very good AV package that will please the fans out there.
