On holiday in Penang where garage forecourts and warehouses by day, were transformed into tropical paradises at night with giant cardboard exotic picture backdrops in minutes and amazing curries were served up in no time. It was amazing we couldn’t make our mind up if we were in India or the Caribbean as we ate although we were actually in Penang.
St Lucia – Kweyol Day celebrations, we stopped at a roadside BBQ – lots of fish, meat and fresh plantains with salad – fantastic!
Nottinghams Goose Fair has loads of wonderful street food vendors right here in the UK. You can’t beat the experience of being wrapped up warm on an October evening with a cup of mushy peas and mint sauce while all around you are the sounds, lights and smells of one of the largest travelling fairs in Europe.
The local people set up small stalls along the street selling all manner of wonderful cuisine, brandy snaps, roasted chestnuts, mushy peas, caribbean delights noodles, churros and much more.
A noodle bar at the side of the road during a festival. Never had better noodles since.
After hours of trekking through London, hunting down my eldest daughter’s favourite singer who was ‘apparently’ near us, we finally stopped. The rare english sun was seeping through the clear sky onto our backs – almost as nice as the to die for smell of a hog roast. We just stared at it, until we could no longer bare it. My hubby told us he was off to the toilet but came back with four hog roasts for the whole family! Bliss! I savoured every last mouthful of it and even writing this now I can almost taste it…
Hot beef goulash on the Austrian Christmas Markets
My revelatory street food experience happened whilst travelling in India. I’d had lots of British style curries in the past but I stopped at a layby and had some Samosa Chat. It was the combination of flavours and spices that was delicious, it blew me away.
Needless to say, however much I’ve tried to replicate the flavours at home, I’ve always failed!
My best street food experience was in China. We pretty much ate street food all day, while exploring! Noodle soup, kebabs, dumplings, Chinese crepes. A real food experience!
