[Toy Fair 2020] LEGO Booth

For the first time in a few years I was able to get some sleep before heading over to the Javits Center before the start of Toy Fair. Unlike in previous years Lego decided to forgo their media preview party and instead held one-on-one interviews. The booth mostly focused on the first half of 2020 products and featured many already announced and released products which to me means we are going to have a huge reveal of products come May for the second half of the year. Hi-Def Ninja was however still able to book an appointment with Lego to view the recent releases including products from the Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Hidden Side, Minions, Trolls, Disney, and Dots lines.

Star Wars

While last year was the 20th anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars line this years products focused on sets from Rise of Skywalker and the reveal of the Razor Crest from The Mandalorian. Also in the Mandalorian line was a Brickheadz Mandalorian and The Child (AKA Baby Yoda). A Duel on Mustafar will also let you recreate the icon scene from Revenge of the Sith between Anakin and Obi-Wan.

Hidden Side

One of the newer lines in the LEGO portfolio, LEGO Hidden Side, had a few new sets a well. This series not based on any license brings augmented reality to the LEGO products. Traditional sets blend with an app in a spooky theme to create a whole new experience for fans. For 2020 there were a few new sets revealed as well as some updates including the packaging to the box to make it more clear there is an app based element but even more the app itself has been updated to allow up to four players and for one of them to play as a ghost.

Dots

LEGO Dots is the newest product and are basically a 2D tile play concept featuring wearable DIY accessories, pencil holders, jewelry holders, and picture frames. You can basically craft your own design on a bracelet one dot at a time creating unique and wonderous creations. Launching in March 2020 LEGO worked with artist Camille Walala on this line utilizing her use of distinctive patterns and colors.

Marvel

LEGO Marvel line continued to expand. Three items of note here include the Iron Man and Thanos Mech figures, the first Spider-Woman minifigure in the Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock set and while not shown off I was told there would be more female character led sets coming with focus on Captain Marvel and Black Widow.

LEGO DC Super Heroes

DC line didn’t have much to show off except a new wave in their mini figures line.

Trolls

LEGO also had some new sets for the upcoming DreamWorks Animation Trolls World Tour movie. This happens to also be the first time LEGO is using a felt type fabric and other fabrics incorporated in their sets.

Minions The Rise of Gru

Another partnership but with Illumination the Minions sets feature some unique features such as in the brick built minions set you can choose to build one of three minions (Bob, Stuart, and Kevin) and their backs open up to reveal a lair adding to the ways the set can be played with.

NINJAGO!

Many new sets based on the new Ninjago season. One of the new lines were a wave of character based Arcade Pods

Disney

LEGO Disney had a few neat sets but the cool new line were the Storybook Adventures line which allow for play-and-go. The set fold up and basically resemble a book and can even be lined up on a shelf that way. Open them up and have a mini-adventure. Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen look to be in the first wave.

Speed

While there are many other lines to display these were the ones of focus at the 2020 NY Toy Fair. So of course I want to end by expressing our thanks to LEGO for hosting Hi-Def Ninja at their booth while at the NY Toy Fair.
