FIFTY SHADES OF GREY
VIDEO QUALITY
The video is a 2160p HEVC prevention is a very nice looking transfer. The picture isn’t miles above the Blu-ray but there are a few places where it does stand out like the HDR. The coloring is slightly bolder and the details are cleaner. The coloring is purposely drab to give off the look of Washington State having cloudy/rainy weather. The coloring begins to take off about 1/3 of the way in with bolder reds and blues. Skin tones are warm and natural.

AUDIO QUALITY
The audio is a DTS:X mix that does a fine job. The overhead gets some sporadic usage when it comes to the rain falling in the early parts of the movie. There are is also some ambient sounds that fill the overhead but this is a dialogue-heavy movie that isn’t big on the effects. However, music is nicely done with clean LFEs and crisps highs.

FIFTY SHADES DARKER
VIDEO QUALITY
The video is a 2160p HEVC presentation that, like the first movie, doesn’t make the comparison to the Blu-ray easy to spot. The detailing in the wardrobe design for the party in the movie does look incredible on the disc. The intricate masks are sharp and match the dresses. The coloring is also better on this disc than in the first movie. The HDR has dark contrasting that keep objects from getting muddled.

AUDIO QUALITY
The audio is a DTS:X mix and it is very much like the previous film. The music is done nicely and layered with minimal effects. The overhead fills the sound field to round off the mix. Echos and ambient effects are mostly what is heard. Dialogue is also clear and prioritized well.

FIFTY SHADES FREED
VIDEO QUALITY
The video is a 2160p HEVC presentation that arguably looks the best out of the trilogy. The HDR does a solid job here of bringing out the detailing and textures of objects including clothing. HDR also has brilliant coloring where it’s needed. Contrasting is also on point with dark shadows and clean, defined lines.

AUDIO QUALITY
The audio is a DTS:X mix that is par with the other mixes in the trilogy. A lively club scene has excellent use of the overhead channels along with the rest of the speakers. LFEs hit hard and have a clear treble for the other things happening in the scene. There is also a car scene that has utilizes the channels to immersive you in the driving. The music and effects are also about par with the other movies. Dialogue is clear and prioritized well.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The FIFTY SHADES Trilogy was a journey and I’m sure it has an audience out there. I’m sure even the people who haven’t seen these movies know about the sex, violence, and drama that is in all three. As for the release itself, the audio and video on all three discs have strong video with equally good audio. There are plenty of extras included and I wonder why they didn’t include them on the 4k disc for the first movie? Overall, the Steelbook is a nice package and if you have the equipment, pick up this with the 4k versions included.
