Original thread title:
Expect ‘Green Lantern 2′ to Be Darker and Edgier Than the First

Green Lantern had a reasonable (not great) opening weekend but was otherwise a creative and financial dud. It is an example of that strange studio phenomenon: a film that manages to feel both over-written, with villains and setpieces seemingly cobbled together from different script drafts, and under-scripted, thanks to the total lack of sense behind most of the character actions. And audiences didn’t respond, once the marketing gave way to word of mouth? Shocker.

Because that opening weekend was north of $50m, Warner Bros. is still planning a sequel. What will the studio’s approach be this time? A solid script that establishes a story with logical and emotional drive and then embellishes it with action? Pfft. Why bother, when it can just be darker and edgier? (Or Dark Knight-ier, as the case may be.)

Warner Bros. film group president Jeff Robinov told the LA Times,

We had a decent opening so we learned there is an audience. To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action… And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.

There is already a script outline put together by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, all of whom worked on the first film. But the LAT reports anonymous sources saying that the outline could be changed or scrapped altogether.

And as for Martin Campbell, who directed the first? He has an option to direct the sequel, but WB reportedly doesn’t want him to be in the big chair. So there might be some backstage dealmaking to be done, but expect to see another name on the film in 2013 or so. (As we expected, really.)

I didn't see the first, so for any that did watch it, how can they improve and make it darker?

I enjoyed it, had good character development so #2 should rock.

Darker, huh? Please include the Manhunters and the massacre of sector 666. It doesn't come much darker than that. And while you're at it, please introduce the Red Lantern Corps. This can lead in directly from the massacre.

I think keeping it light from the start is a requirement. To try and lure more people on the first round and go heavy for the fan on round 2

Wow, good to hear. I too haven't seen this one yet, but based on the reviews I have read, it would be great for them to improve things for part 2.

Green Lantern 2 first draft script details...

...courtesy of Cosmic Book News.

Copying the relevant bits from the article:

The story is by Greg Berlanti, Marc Gruggenheim and Michael Green with the screenplay by Michael Goldenburg, with details from the first draft as follows:

• Most of the film is set in space.

• At the start of the film, Hal Jordan and Sinestro are paired to stop an intergalactic serial killer, Arkillo, who Sinestro later frees to join his Corps and restore order to the universe.

• Sinestro's decision to leave the Corps is mainly due to his distrust of the Guardians and the fact he feels that the universe laughs at the Green Lanterns. Sinestro feels that a new Corps should replace them.

• Sinestro visits Warworld to recruit members to his new Corps.

• Sinestro frees Amon Sur and recruits him to his new Corps.

• There is a reference to Amon Sur's previous attempt to destroy the Corps, which happened in Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.

• Carol Ferris is kidnapped by Sinestro to draw Hal Jordan to him.

• Jordan requests that the Guardians deploy the entire Corps to Korugar to rescue Carol and defeat Sinestro's Corps, but they deny his request. He subsequently makes a plea to the Corps via transmission of his ring. Several hundred respond and encounter Sinestro's fledging Corps in a battle above Korugar.

• Hal, Kilowog and Tomar-Re use the large battle taking place above Korugar as a distraction to sneak to the surface of the planet to rescue Carol. There, they are confronted by Sinestro, Arkillo and Amon Sur. Hal and Sinestro evenly match each other, while Kilowog defeats Arkillo, and Tomar-Re defeats Amon Sur before they rescue Carol.

• The battle between the two Corps ends with the Sinestro Corps retreating due to the majority having little experience with the ring.

• There is a foreshadowing to the third film with a discussion by the Guardians mentioning that a "War of Light" is coming.

• Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong, Blake Lively, Geoffrey Rush are all contracted to return for the sequel.

• Kevin Michael Richardson is expected to replace Michael Clarke Duncan as the voice of Kilowog.

I still say that Ryan Reynolds is not the right choice to play Hal Jordan. The character does not give in to comedic relief and does not make flippant statements. You could almost say that when he dons the costume, he becomes almost cold and ruthless. Ryan Reynolds embodies none of that. Garett Hedlund should've gotten the lead role.

first movie had decent enough theatrical sales that this project got green lighted (no pun intended) just a couple months after it left theaters. fyi

and since then Ryan has married Blake Lively ... I guess he will look truly in love, instead of bad ass. :p

I didn't like or hate the first one but I think they could've done more.... It had a lot of Potential and i felt like it was wasted. Reynolds as Kyle - Waaaaayyyy better:D

I cant believe that I liked it in theater but hated it at home ... I actually thought what the hell was I thinking in the theater? Sometimes its funny how watching a movie with a crowd can be more entertaining ... that is, when you get a GOOD CROWD ... not like some crowds are these days.
