Is this first extended edition steelbook set for LOTR ? Or extended editions received steelbook treatment previously ?

If they were to put the whole film on one disc then maybe these would persuade me to get rid of my trilogy steelbook.

Nothing worse than changing discs halfway through a film!

If these were a box set of steels like Nolan's Batman trilogy steel set released by Amazon.de, then those covers would be acceptable. But they are separate releases at 24€ each, then these are a mega fail.

I was thinking the same thing. Almost $100 plus shipping for three catalogue title steels with the same repetitive artwork. These releases reminded of the Bourne steels recently released in USA/Canada which were all practically the same artwork front/back/inside but they were easily justified at only $12 each. Not that the artwork is ugly on these three but a little creativity would have gone a long way by only making one of them with that artwork and different art for the other two. IMO the three LOTR releases from USA suffered the same problem, similar artwork on all three (at-least those are busy looking so it makes them look a little different). But the studio's know these will sell out regardless... might as well keep milking the cash cow.

Mission Impossible 1,2,3 releases kind of had the same problem as well with repetitive artwork. These releases that seem to come out at the same time for franchises tend to yield these lazy repetitive artwork steels.
