With 4K around the corner it’s made me think!!! Will Blu Ray Steel Books become devalued like G1 DVD Steels? (Not so collectible)

4K is hardly around the corner (really) and from what I have read blu-ray disc will be sufficient to support 4K so a media format change wont be happening either so I highly doubt these current steelbooks will tank in value when 4K appears.
More on the point that 4K isn't even close to coming to a beginning of mainstream is the fact that DVD sales up to mid 2012 still account for 77% of all home media sales with blu-ray taking 23%.
Things like 3D are still wavering in the market hanging by a thread. When 4K finally appears my best guess is that it will be a highly niche item in the market adopted by only the hard-core enthusiast with large screen setups (think 70"+) to take advantage of the 4K content (which will no doubt be limited to major releases only). 4k will be like laserdisc IMO.
Thats just my guesses though as you never know what the future holds. With serious threats of physical media possibly dying in the future it makes things even more unclear.

I can't believe people still buy dvds, once I got a taste of HD I couldn't go back.
I heard that the new blu rays will be able to hold up to 120 gigs, which is about what the basic 4k movie will be (not including bonus features,etc)...I think I have to disagree with you about it being like laser disc though buddy..I think it will take forever to fully go mainstream, just like blu ray..But, once its out, everybody will want it!!

^^^ Right? It pains me when I see people paying $20 for a new release dvd in store

If 4K goes mainstream like regular blu-ray has in terms of hardware pricing and content availability then sure 4K wont be like laserdisc. But I think initially when 4K goes "a little mainstream" (if that makes sense?) it will feel like its similar to laserdisc in the sense that I think a lot of people will be hesitant to buy into it. The stubbornness of the mass consumer has beyond unbelievable (to me at-leasst) just buying into regular blu-ray from dvd that was a HUGE difference in picture/audio quality that pretty much everyone from a kid to old folks could see and hear with there eyes on 12" screen to 100"+. The quality difference and jump in picture quality isnt that obvious and of as large proportion from regular blu-ray to 4k that of dvd to blu-ray (until you reach larger tv's like 70"+) was. Just think how many people from the mass consumer population own a tv bigger then 50 or 60 inches? Barely any. Most of the market is 60" or less tv's. In this tv size range 4K really doesnt make "that big of picture quality difference" from regular blu-ray.
A large part of being able to sell blu-ray to people was that when people would see a blu-ray playing on a 1080p 50" tv and then stare at a similar size tube or dlp tv they just went "WOW" at the difference. Despite this wow factor people are still buying and using systems supporting dvd's which were launched in 1997?. Look at how long it took to cast out VHS and some might say the most impactful and successful physical format of all time is DVD. Now think how long it will take to phase out DVD (if maybe at all).
All Im saying is that when you read things online from people and hang out in places like HDN where similar minded people are it seems like wow the whole world is on board with blu-ray and the future like 4K content but the reality is the world really is stuck in the past. I heard somewhere that people that use the internet are an "elite group of people" in the world. The reason being that only 35% of worlds entire population uses the internet. << To put things in perspective.
Things don't move forward until a large amount of the consumer market buy's into a format which then allows the manufacturing and distribution of a format at cheaper and larger quantities (and titles).
Until this doesn't happen I just cant see how 4K will come mainstream. I think a positive sign would be seeing more content being released in the format for the few users that were able to afford 4k $25K projectors (by Sony I think). I still havent understood how they buy 4K movies for those projectors and from where.
Just my 2 cents really which I have rambled on about, lol. Personally as a home theatre enthusiast I really hope 4K goes mainstream some day and we can buy $10 4K blu's
I think 4K will have a real task to succeed. A lot of people don't even have 1080p and are still happy with DVDs. I can't see enough people wanting big TVs for this to become mainstream anytime soon. Off course if it is successful then yes Blu-ray Steelbooks would be devalued as is always the case with a new format. I believe this will be many years off though IMO.
In my store the most frequently asked question is "Sorry, but what is a Blu-Ray Disc?"
For most of the people a DVD is already in HD in their mind... and they most of the time prefer to pay 20€ for just a DVD while the Combo BluRay+DVD is at the same price...
If BDA enhances BD spec to support 4K and doesn't change the dimensions of the Blu-ray Steelbook then I don't think it will become devalued. Otherwise, it will follow the DVD SB route.
When 4K is released, I will buy those steelbooks right away. When I still was on DVD I didn't collected Blu-rays at all. Then after switching then you know what you have missed. 
I never realized that alot of countries are still at 720p levels..How can that be?..I always thought the US were the ones behind in technology, at least compared to Japan and China..
I know UHD (4k) cable is still years away, we just got Fios like 1 year ago, in my part of the suburbs, but a 4k player and tv will still be awesome!!
