Remember Kung Fury, the bonkers half-hour movie about a time-traveling kung fu cop from Miami who fights Adolf Hitler? Well, it looks like we could be getting a sequel.

David Sandberg, the Swedish writer/director behind Kung Fury, recently posted a photo of a script titled Kung Fury II: The Movie to Instagram. “Today, Kung Fury turns 1,” he wrote. “Today, the future is written… Stay tuned.”

The original film came from humble beginnings as a much shorter teaser trailer. Thanks to generous funding through Kickstarter, Sandberg was able to develop his concept into a 30-minute film, which screened at the Cannes Film Festival. It later found distribution on Netflix.

“It’s extremely over the top,” Sandberg previously told EW. “I had these elements of robots and dinosaurs and mutants and stuff like that and thought, ‘How can I combine this into one film without it being too, like, just wacky?’ The ‘80s decade was such a perfect, crazy decade for this storyline. It somehow works.”

Actor Michael Fassbender has found his next project, and if you had “starring in a feature length sequel to viral short film” in the office betting pool, you’ve won! Fassbender will star in Kung Fury, the feature-length sequel to the viral action-comedy short from director David Sandberg. Sandberg will also star in the film alongside none other than David Hasselhoff. Production begins this summer on the project.

It’s 1985, the best year ever. Miami is kept safe under the watchful eye of Kung Fury, the greatest damn cop of all time. Kung Fury’s Thundercops are the ultimate police force assembled from across history to defeat the villainous Kung Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. After the tragic death of a Thundercop causes the group to disband, a mysterious villain emerges from the shadows to aid in the Fuhrer’s quest to attain the ultimate weapon. Kung Fury must travel space and time itself to save his friends, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy, and defeat evil once and for all.

David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith and Aaron Schmidt will produce under their KatzSmith Productions banner with Philip Westgren of B-Reel Films and Conor McCaughan.

Bloom announced today that Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator) will join Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, Steve Jobs) and David Hasselhoff (Baywatch) in David Sandberg’s action-comedy, Kung Fury. The movie is a follow-up to Sandberg’s cult 2015 short. The creator will also star in and produce under his Laser Unicorns’ banner, alongside Fassbender.

Schwarzenegger will play the American president in the feature-length film, which is set to shoot in Europe and the U.S. this summer.

From ComingSoon:

Eiza González, who starred in Edgar Wright’s Oscar-nominated Baby Driver, has joined David Sandberg’s action-comedy Kung Fury, a follow-up to Sandberg’s cult 2015 short. González will star alongside the previously-announced Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), and David Hasselhoff (Knight Rider), who starred in the original short. Sandberg, who played Kung Fury in his short and will star in the film, is producing under his Laser Unicorns’ banner alongside Fassbender.

González is a native of Mexico where she began her career in the titular role of the popular Mexican telenovela Lola. Her upcoming projects include Alita: Battle Angel and the Untitled Robert Zemeckis Project. Details on her role in Kung Fury have not yet been released.

Kung Fury began as a Kickstarter project with a modest $200,000 goal which quickly took the internet by storm and raised over $630,000 for the film. The original short also included The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone as Adolph Hitler and a song, True Survivor, performed by Hasselhoff. The short film, which you can watch in full in the player below, has gained over 40 million views worldwide.

Bloom is handling foreign rights to the film and will be continuing sales in Cannes, following a successful market in Berlin securing distribution in CIS, Germany/Switzerland, Italy, Latin America, Philippines, Romania, Scandinavia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, and Turkey. Endeavor Content and CAA are handling North American sales.

David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, and Aaron Schmidt will produce under their KatzSmith Productions banner, following their enormous success with IT, which grossed over $700 million worldwide, becoming the largest grossing horror film of all time as of last year. Philip Westgren of B-Reel Films and Conor McCaughan will also produce. Pelle Strandberg is executive producing on behalf of Laser Unicorns.

Kung Fury will begin shooting this summer.
