When Activision lured Bizarre away from Microsoft, it wasn't to make platformers. It was to make racing games. Like the one Bizarre are working on now, called Blur.

Revealed in the latest issue of French magazine/Edge accompaniment Joypad, Blur seems be offering everything Bizarre did so well with Project Gotham - namely fast cars, exotic locations and a great damage model - and adding something new.

Weapons.

Yes, if you ever wanted your PGR to have a little more Mario Kart (and really, you should have been expecting it), the game will apparently feature a range of vehicular weapons and armour.

And...that's about all that can be gleaned from the article. We'll hope/expect some more details and screenshots to come sometime between now and E3.

OP UPDATED

Blur To Offer Cross-Platform Multiplayer Via Twitter

During the same presentation last weekend, in which Activision and Bizarre confirmed Blur's release date, the firms have also revealed their unique plans for the arcade racer's multiplayer options.

Obviously you'll be able to simultaneously race online, but you'll also be able to throw down challenges between PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players via Twitter.

"In the single player mode when you finish a race, it records all of your stats and information," Blur's lead designer, Gareth Wilson told MTV News.

"You can choose what you want to put into your challenge and send it to your buddy. He receives that as an Xbox Dashboard message, so he could be playing another game, he could be watching TV on Netflix."

Wilson mentions the Xbox Dashboard, but presumably the same will be true of your PlayStation 3's inbox.

It's an innovative use of Twitter that enables players to issue challenges between players on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Wilson promising that it won't "be this horrible, spammy thing."

So, Twitter integration bringing PS3 and Xbox 360 owners together, eh? Who'd have thunk it?

According to Nerdkiller Blur is offering Beta Keys at File planet. He said for Xbox 360 I dunno if this applies for PS3 as well.

It's for 360 only. cali is giving one away... :)
Destructiod and Kotaku also did a giveaway yesterday. Anyway, I'm a shoe-in as I'm awaiting my code on Monday.

Also, the title of the thread is kind of misleading. Its technically not cross platform multiplayer. Just cross platform updates from a website I hate.

Not only are the cats and dogs living together, but they're using Twitter. According to MTV Multiplayer, upcoming racer Blur will allow some social interaction not only between players, but between different platforms. Whether you're on Xbox Live -- silver or gold -- or PlayStation 3, you'll be able to issue competitive challenges to friends, with Twitter acting as a neutral intermediary. Think of it as that time you had to pass messages between your feuding parents, only you're telling Dad that Mom just utterly destroyed his pathetic lap record.

Speaking at a Blur presentation, lead designer Gareth Wilson offered an interesting anecdote as explanation: "I've got a friend from university who lives in Australia, and I can't play with him, because he's available at night time when I'm sleeping. So the Friends Challenge thing was really, 'How do we get people together to play who might not be able to.'" And while PS3 and Xbox 360 racers might not be able to play together in real time once the game launches on May 25, Bizarre Creations thinks of the Twitter connection as an innovative way to foster some healthy, cross-platform rivalry.

Wilson also notes that the social integration won't be a "horrible, spammy thing." So no Facebook support, then.

Bizarre Creations not done with Blur

Developer Bizarre Creations has revealed its intention to churn out more titles in the Blur franchise despite tepid sales of 2010's inaugural ‘Mario Kart for grown-ups' racer.

The Project Gotham creator sees Blur as "the start of a big franchise for Bizarre" and as a result a sequel is very much on the cards. The original Blur achieved some impressive review scores but ultimately failed to stimulate much interest at retail.

However, Bizarre producer Nick Davies attributes the lacklustre sales as a result of the title being released in a particularly competitive time frame:

“It came out at the same time as ModNation Racers and Split/Second. It rates incredibly highly and it's a very popular game, and I think it's going to be a slow-burner. I think the multiplayer will stay for a long time and I think people will come back to that time and time again, long after some of the other games have gone back to the second-hand shelf,” said Davies.

Undeterred, Davies added: "...it's always been the plan to make the number one racing franchise. That's as much as I can say!"

Bizarre is currently working on the spy outing James Bond 007: Blood Stone for PS3.

Activision’s Blur Offers Double XP All Halloweekend, Developer Play Session

I am about to become a legend.

No, really: In Blur, when you hit level 50 in the multiplayer system, you have opened up all the cars (oh, Koenigsegg CCX, how I love thee), activated all the mods (Mastermine – which fragments other people’s mines and gives you the points for it – is my favorite), unlocked all the game modes (including Motor Mash and the fan-driven Community Event playlist), and hopefully have a decent strategy for all the tracks, from the tight turns of Hackney to the one-way trip down Mount Haruna. And when you reach level 50, well, there’s nowhere else to go. Except around the track, of course. Preferably very quickly.

And then, much like Modern Warfare 2, you face a decision: Do you keep playing with all the big toys, or do you challenge yourself by hitting a Legend rank and building up your reputation and garage again, based on pure skill?

As I write this, I’m level 40 or so. I’m going to get some more racing time in this week. And this weekend, the Blur developers at Bizarre Creations are offering a little Halloween treat – double XP from Friday the 29th through Sunday the 31st. (These are the perks when your studio’s logo is a jack-o-lantern.) That means for every race, you get twice as many fans, which means ranking up twice as fast, filling your garage with gorgeous Corvettes and Elises and Vipers in record time.

My mind is made up. I’m not wasting a weekend of double XP to just sit on my level-50 throne – as soon as I can hit Legend status, I’m going for it. Of course, it does not hurt that, by doing so, I will also unlock an exclusive car as well as a Gold Trophy. Plus, I get to use all the cars I earned in the single-player career mode in my online races, too. Armed with that, I’m willing to put my rank on the line.

The double XP goodness flows all weekend, but if you race Saturday, October 30th from 11am to 2pm, you might find yourself trading paint with the Bizarre Creations developers themselves. And of course, look for me too – my PSN ID is OneOfSwords. With any luck, I’ll be at the front of the pack!
