Some studios and movies are so hardcore about what artwork is available that I've moved past wanting new artwork on many titles. I take what I'm given otherwise many times I would have no steelbook for that movie entirely.

Retailers can only leverage their power so much ...

That's what I miss about laserdiscs - often they really went to town giving them the deluxe treatment, with great packaging and artwork that was different from the VHS or early DVD release. Movies seemed a little less disposable then, like you were really buying and owning something for the ages.

Guess that's why I'm attracted to steelbooks!

I can easily imagine Disney being quite strict with the artwork for the animated classics; these films are their babies. It's disappointing news, but not particularly surprising.

An Aladdin steel is better than no Aladdin steel, so bring it on!

Nothing wrong with expressing an opinion on what you would want changed for future steels though, this is a forum after all.

However i'm quite happy with the artwork as the nostalgia of having the same cover as the VHS copy I had as a child is best for me...

The teaser poster would have looked nicer on display though ;)

No, nothing wrong with that at all.

I wasn't aware I gave that impression - If I did, it was completely unintentional!

I am not sure, but it seems that they are being quite strict when it comes to the US and UK markets, while letting their divisions in other regions be more free to decide for themselves. I've seen some beautiful cover art from Europe/Japan for various special editions. The thing Disney already have some really beautiful theatrical posters for their movies.

They are often very simple and stylized with a limited colour palette, which would would suit a steelbook well.

Talking about Disney Steelbook, I love the Lion King (BestBuy exclusive?) case they released in the US. Never could get my hands on that one

DAMMIT!!! Missed this cuz I was in Vegas.

Then I guess we're in the same boat. (Well, apart from the reason why. I was sick, next to last thing on my mind was lurking the forums for a new steelbook.)

The sad thing is, that the UK used to get artwork similar to what you're describing. I have this DVD edition of Beauty and the Beast:

It's not the most exciting thing ever, but it's different from the standard artwork Disney tend to use; it's fresh.

It seems to be a recent thing, and Disney UK have been putting less and less effort into almost every aspect of a release: recycled artwork, bare minimum of special features, and a marked decrease in the quality of transfers. Compare the 2008 release of Sleeping Beauty with any release from last year, it's night and day.

Yes, that's a great one, thanks for reminding me! I was smart enough to hold on to that edition when they released BatB on Blu. Or not so smart: The downside about a well designed cover is it tends to outlive the actual disc.

My favourite though is the glossy two-part slipcover for Atlantis: The Lost Empire Collector's Edition. Would be great to see Disney do that as a tin. Not going to happen, but they really made an effort with that release. And I think the movie is pretty underrated imo.

Yes, for sure, if you cant get it...judge it, way too easy....
and as for the comment on limited print run, thats why they are collectibles, otherwise, plenty of amarays to choose from....

They may have the amaray in the UK but here in the US Aladdin isn't getting a blu-ray release until next year.

Thanks, I will.... that's such a bummer, I never thought these would sell out so quickly. Not to mention, when I checked my basket today, Aladdin it was still there, couple of hours later and it was gone

I think the artwork looks great personally. Anyone who doesn't like it should vote with their wallet and not order/cancel their order and let those who do like it grab a copy. Considering six months ago we thought Steelbook collecting as we knew it was at an end in the UK, we haven't done too badly since. Maybe we should concentrate on the positives of what could be another great Disney releases rather than moaning. Anyone who took a look in this forum would think we were a bunch of moaning gits, who enjoy moaning about various aspects of Steelbook collecting rather than actually collecting them.

Moaning? What's the point in being a collector if you don't have any preferences or opinions? There are a lot of upcoming releases, but the quality isn't always great.

Thankfully got my order in this morning at 8am phew :) but I'm fearing as I was one of the last ones, any chance mine will be cancelled as they could have oversold :(

Steeler, I think what we try and do on this forum, that might be a bit different from other spots you have visited - is to not continually discuss all the negatives surrounding a release - page after page.

Many people that visit this forum also subscribe to threads, to get the latest news delivered to their e-mail inbox (and to find out if the item they are looking for comes back in stock). I believe they appreciate our efforts to keep discussions on topic and positive.

In that respect, the mission of this forum is to have a fun place discuss and chat about the movie, the steelbook, and in many cases find out from other collectors their past experiences with steelbooks.

However, we have many different forums and subforms for discussion.

These include -

1) Our general retailer section - there are threads on many different retailers and discussion of their packaging, etc.

2) Our general steelbook chat & feedback sections - with polls and discussions about titles you would like to see in steelbook and other subjects.

3) Our "OMG the price is high thread" which lives in our trading forum - members can discuss the high prices on e-bay and other marketplaces, and even share links if they would like.

So having said that, we kindly ask that all members try and stay on topic and visit the appropriate forum or subforum that is specific to the thing you are looking to discuss.

There has a been an influx of new members lately, so in addition to a post being moved to another location, or perhaps a "pop-in" from a moderator or staff member, you may receive a friendly PM discussing our mission and what we are trying to do here.

Hope that all makes sense and also provides a heads up to other new members that have been reading this thread and are excited about this release.

Thank you.
