Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman have brought Neil Gaiman's fantasy series American Gods to HBO, which we assume means things will work out for the project. Who says no to Tom Hanks? Seriously?

Looks like Gaiman and renowned cinematographer Robert Richardson will write the pilot together.

For those of you who don't follow cinematographers, Richardson's impressive credits include Hugo Cabret, as well as Kill Bill AND Inglourious Basterds.

The book/potential show's story is about two sets of Gods (traditional and mythological ones). The Gods are "losing steam" because people aren't believing in them anymore, and they're in danger of being replaced by new Gods which "reflect America's preoccupation with technological advancements and obsessions with media, celebrity, technology, and drugs."

The main character in the story is "an ex-con who becomes the traveling partner of a conman who turns out to be one of the older gods trying to recruit troops to battle the upstart deities."

i saw the first 2 episodes and i'm impressed.
Ian McShane does a fantastic Job as Mr. Wednesday.
The whole show is awesome, can't wait to see the next episode.

I watched the first episode yesterday and you can see the influence of Bryan Fuller (Hannibal). But after the first episode i found it too arthouse even for my liking. Will continue to watch cause im interested where this is going.

the taxi driver scene in episode 3 destroyed the whole tv show, so stopped watching it. dont know if I give this tv show a second chance.

7 episodes in and still not got a clue about this show

i discussed this with a friend past weekend. I was saying that if you didn't read the books or checked what the books about youdon't understand the show and he was like "No People should now that with this episodes."
Watched first 9 Episodes and read a bit about the books. So i know whats going on, but only Show Watcher didnt have a clue.

Press release today:

Starz, a Lionsgate company (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B), announced today that the eight-episode second season of the epic series “American Gods” will premiere on Sunday, March 10th, 2019 at 8PM ET/PT on STARZ and will be available the same day on the STARZ App.

Starring Ricky Whittle (The 100, Nappily Ever After) as Shadow Moon and Ian McShane (“Deadwood”, John Wick) as Mr. Wednesday, “American Gods” is a one-hour drama adapted from Neil Gaiman’s best-selling novel about a war brewing between Old Gods and New Gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.

We were forged in God’s image, but the Gods are also made in ours — and in Season Two the battle moves inexorably toward crisis point as the destinies of gods and men collide. While Mr. World plots revenge for the attack against him in Season One, Shadow throws in his lot with Wednesday’s attempt to convince the Old Gods of the case for full-out war, with Laura and Mad Sweeney in tow. A council at the House on the Rock explodes into chaos, sending deities both Old and New on quests across America that will converge on Cairo, Illinois: forcing Shadow to carve out a place as a believer in this strange new world of living gods — a dark world where change demands commitment, and faith requires terrible sacrifice.

Worshipers Can Make Early Offerings to Old Gods and New by Tuning In to the Season One Holy Day Binge, Saturday, December 29th on STARZ or Anytime on the STARZ App

“American Gods” is the epic story of an inevitable war building between the Old Gods of mythology and our New Gods of technology. Whittle stars as ex-con Shadow Moon, a man pulled into the service of the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, played by Ian McShane (“Deadwood", John Wick) — only to discover that not only is his charismatic but un-trustable boss actually the Norse All-Father god Odin, he’s also...Shadow’s father.

In Season 3 Shadow angrily pushes this apparent destiny away, and settles in the idyllic snowy town of Lakeside, Wisconsin — to make his own path, guided by the gods of his black ancestors, the Orishas. But he’ll soon discover that this town's still waters run deep, and dark, and bloody, and that you don’t get to simply reject being a god. The only choice — and a choice you have to make — is what kind of god you’re going to be.
