Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman have brought Neil Gaiman's fantasy series American Gods to HBO, which we assume means things will work out for the project. Who says no to Tom Hanks? Seriously?

Looks like Gaiman and renowned cinematographer Robert Richardson will write the pilot together.

For those of you who don't follow cinematographers, Richardson's impressive credits include Hugo Cabret, as well as Kill Bill AND Inglourious Basterds.

The book/potential show's story is about two sets of Gods (traditional and mythological ones). The Gods are "losing steam" because people aren't believing in them anymore, and they're in danger of being replaced by new Gods which "reflect America's preoccupation with technological advancements and obsessions with media, celebrity, technology, and drugs."

The main character in the story is "an ex-con who becomes the traveling partner of a conman who turns out to be one of the older gods trying to recruit troops to battle the upstart deities."
