Are 3D TV's on their way out?

Pricing is an issue and TV Networks have not embraced it as a possible evolution. With slow progression comes slow sales.

Another issue is the speed at which new products are getting released. Most people don't have the money to always go out and buy a new TV, player etc..

2 years ago you paid extra for 3D. Last year most any decent HD Flatscreen beyond 46" seemed to just have 3D as a matter of fact, and not a choice. I know many people who bought their TVs because they loved the TV- 3D just happened to be on it. I fall into that camp. I actually really like having the option, and have enjoyed a bunch of 3D films(providing the 3D was done correctly and well). But I didn't buy it because of it. Now we have this weird trend of movies in 3D in the theater, but their respective Blu rays afterwards are only offering it in territories outside the U.S. (Noah, Dredd, etc.).
Just like the old story that porn decided which way the wind would blow on home entertainment format wars, I think it is true that Japan, Korea, and Especially China are going to be leading indicators on all things 3D, HFR, and (god help us) texting participation movie theaters. And the Chinese and Korean markets Love, and I mean, freakin' LOVE 3D. So, I don't see it going away anytime soon. Plus, factor in heavy hitters like James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Peter Jackson, & FX legend Douglas Trumbull who all love this move to 3D.
So are the TV's themselves selling slow? Yeah. But we'll see. Let's also not forget that there is a kinda format war within 3D- Active Vs. Passive. And TV's are in a flux cycle. We have 4k, Curved Screens (which is a scam on SOOO MANY LEVELS), OLED (3 to 5 years away for most consumers- but will be the next gold standard), and 8K off in the near future (which will quickly supplant 4K to the dismay of buyers of 4K TVs everywhere).Like I said- I'm not an advocate for 3D in any way. As long as I can choose between which way I want to watch it's fine.
But since my purchase of a new screen earlier this year, I haven't paid much attention to the market...But back in January, 3D TVs where available everywhere. They weren't pushing them hard like the years before, but they were there.

there is also theater 3d now too. (for in home) I love it, just never have much time to enjoy movies these days. (at home)

Figures, I will have the money to get one, but they are not sold in my area. I don't trust having one shipped from Amazon

I have never been a fan of 3D for home viewing. I am all for it at the Cinema. But not at home.

I'm excited about 4k and 8k offerings in the future. Currently i'm more than happy with my 4-5 year old Samsung 50" Plasma 1080p set up. I have recently decided to blast it at max settings (max cell light etc) in the hope the TV burns out and dies on me in the next year or two so I have a PROPER excuse to upgrade.

When I initially bought it, I burnt it in properly, always used it at moderate settings etc.

excellent post. thanks.

i am about to replace my old sony kdl-40w4230 probably with panasonic VIERA TX-47AS650E 3d. http://www.whathifi.com/panasonic/tx-47as650b/review have plenty of 3d blus. never seen one. as i do not go to theaters have seen there any eihter. so looking forward ... but maybe in possible let down. I prefer - for what i have read - passive 3d. 4K/8K does not interest me ... for some reason unknown. should i be ? maybe 8K when it's here and affordable.

just bought new br player : sony bdps 7200 http://www.whathifi.com/sony/bdp-s7200/review ... "There’s no shortage of Blu-ray players out there, but the BDP-S7200 stands out. It will be a tough one to beat."

I purchased my Samsung 3d TVs 2 years ago now @1500 for the purpose of it being 3d and can honestly say that I think within the time I've had it I used the feature twice .

My two little ones ended up running around the house with the glasses on . The glasses got more use (a lot more ) than the 3d feature ever did , now I couldn't even tell you were the glasses were , more than likely in my daughters bag .

I'll be purchasing a new tv at the end of the month and it won't be 3d , ultra hd 4k for me

When shopping for a new TV a few months ago 3D was definitely not a must have for me nor were smart functions. PQ is the most important feature!
The TV I decided on is a 3D TV and I have watched a few 3D movies and honestly I think 3D is left for the cinema, its a 65 screen but I think you need to go huge to really enjoy 3D!

I don't know anyone who owns one. I have several 3D Blu-rays but only because I bought it for the 2D only.

3D is not appealing to me. I love cinema just not gimmicky stuff, there are far fewer decent 3D developed films than there are bad ones. Unless the TV includes it at standard price, It doesn't seem like a worthy investment.

Maybe if they were cheaper more people would be up for it. I'm game but not for those prices.

I finally got my 60" Samsung Dec 27th and I love it. Having to fork out 250.00 for 5 pairs of glasses sucked. But I enjoy the 3D. I think the best 3D movie effects so far are GOTG

I have a feeling that 3D will become a thing of the past soon untill we get 4K 3D Ultra, but i can say i do love sitting down with the family and watching a 3D film.

Sitting down with the family, yes, but I really do not like the 3D glasses over my normal specs. so a vote of I hope that 3D dies out gracefully from me I am afraid.

Damn, I did not know that they even existed, Google search here I come.

No worries i believe you can only get the clip on 3D glasses for passive 3D TV's (I got a pair of LG ones 2 years ago from ebay £9.95). If ygot an active 3D then I don't think you can get clip ons.

I think most tvs have 3D just for the sake of having it. Same as Smartv features. The problem is that most of the content isn't 3d native so it lacks quality and in the end people don't like the tradeoff with the flasses for just a couple of good 3d moments within a qhole movie

Some conversions can be better than native IMHO.

Jurassic Park and Top Gun for example. both look amazing in 3D :)
