Are Steelbooks getting flimsy?

I just posted in the Goonies thread regarding the lightness of the material, but basically I've noticed steelbooks as of late appear to be lighter? Wondering if gloss makes them lighter than say matt? Has anyone noticed this?

I know many of you guys post pictures of the steelbooks fully spread when reviewing. Is this something that can loosen or make them floppy over time?

I had some issues with the Goonies steelbook. It clasps into place, but to me it seems to hold very little tension when opening the case.

My kimchi steels are quality so i guess it depends who you buy from, loads of crap zavvi steels being released in the masses but if you want quality you have to pay for it.

Not done any tests but when I picked up Pacific Rim yesterday it felt light, and that was with 3 discs inside. I think it's generally accepted though that the steel used now isn't anywhere near the same quality as in the early years.

Yep I think Wreck stated that they use a thinner gauge metal than what they used to. Some of the older Steelbooks do seem to weigh a lot more.

I'm thinking about it now. I remember when I got my first one, The Dark Knight (DE), it felt kinda heavy with only two discs inside. I have to compare it with the newest ones to check.

There have been studios that have released thinner Steels like the Italian Steels way back (The Interpreter, etc)...however, for others, they are more solid-like some of the Japanese ones. Embossing and debossing impacts how 'firm' a Steelbook 'feels' but that is a slightly issue (unless a thinner Steel is used and also embossed/debossed).

I presume that due to increasing demand of the steelbook format that Scanvo are using a lighter metal to speed up the production process

just my 2c though

Interesting points guys. I'm not that obsessive these days so I've layed off the Asian releases, but wondered if the same company produces Steelbooks how could paying premium for a KimiChi release mean a better Steelbook? Do Kimchi pay more to Scanavo for their releases than say Zavvi? Would this affect the material?

 P.S. Someone help me out with a Zavvi OCD test. If you have The Goonies and From Dusk Till Dawn, how do these feel compared to Black Swan or Withnail and I? Just noticed Both Goonies and From Dusk Till Dawn, (recent releases) open all the way and feel generally lighter than the earlier releases a few months back. Any thoughts/help appreciated!

I remember my fast 5 triple play being quite weighty when i first got that. Was the first steel i bought! Pacific rim doesnt seem as heavy with all the discs so i guess the steel is slightly thinner.
