August 2009 NPD: PS3 closing the gap on Xbox 360

NPD figures for the month of August 2009 have revealed that Sony sold a whopping 210,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in the U.S. last month, resulting in a 72 percent rise in sales compared to July.

The figure puts the console only 5,400 units behind its leading competitor, Xbox 360, which shifted 215,400 units during the same period. Both formats had recently received price cuts at retail, though it’s worth noting that Sony’s revamped PS3 Slim didn’t hit shelves until September 1, and therefore did not impact on August’s hardware figures.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier commented: The price cuts implemented on the PS3 and 360 hardware already made an impact on unit sales, despite having been executed fairly late in the month.”

"It will be interesting to see the full impact of the new price points on September sales."

PS3 to see 50-100% sales boost in September, says Pachter

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities has forecast a 50-100 percent rise in PlayStation 3 sales for the month of September 2009.

Sony’s flagship console sold through 210,000 units last month as a result of the price cut issued following the company's press conference at GamesCom in Germany. Said Pachter: "The late August price cut for the PS3 clearly drove a pick-up in demand, with that console’s sales up 73 per cent sequentially, and we expect another 50 - 100 per cent sales growth in September.”

"Xbox 360 hardware sales were again solid, again outselling PS3 hardware. Until the late August PS3 price cut, the Xbox 360 appealed to consumers, likely due to a higher perceived value proposition."

The analyst also highlighted the fact the PS3/360 are now priced at only $50 USD higher than the Wii, claiming that a fresh bundle or price reduction would be needed to stimulate lagging sales of the Nintendo platform.

“With the core PS3 and Xbox 360 models priced only $50 higher than the Wii, we expect year-over-year sales of Wii hardware to continue their annual declines until the company either changes its bundle or lowers price," he said. "Wii unit sales are 50 per cent below last year’s level over the last five months, and we think that September sales will repeat the pattern."

not that i want one but the wii should never be within 50 bucks of the 360 or the ps3. price cut required!

if they price cut they cut there money in half it take them 150 bucks to make each wii they drop the price down 50 or 100 bucks they aint making nothing,i know the sales are down but we all seen this coming hew aint got a wii?
