Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya asks, "Have action games really progressed past what we accomplished seven years ago?" Speaking at last night's Platinum Games coming out party, Kamiya recalled his efforts to "kick start" the action genre into 3D with Devil May Cry back in 2001 and said, "we, as creators, have squandered an opportunity to make things better, smoother, more intense, more engaging" since then. Fear not, Kamiya has returned to "make good on [the] promise of seven years ago." Enter: Bayonetta -- "action to its climax."

Bayonetta is named for the game's main character, a witch reborn in the modern day to join a war against angels (apparently someone hasn't been spending her afterlife Up There). "Not only does she kick and punch, and have two guns in her hands, she actually equips guns on her feet." If that's not enough to mow down those beasts of heaven, then Bayonetta's also got her witchcraft, an arsenal of top-secret "abilities" ... And that's all we've got to go on, for now -- 'cept for the trailer after the break!

The US games ratings board, the ESRB, has rated the upcoming Platinum Games developed Bayonetta. As you’d expect the game has been given a Mature rating, with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, and Suggestive Themes cited as the reasons for the rating.

The ESRB go into more detail on the rating, commenting that “players use hand-to-hand combat, magic attacks, and pistols to kill enemy creatures that often spray blood when hit.” Furthermore, it is said players can use “torture attacks” on creatures to kill them, impaling them with an iron maiden, decapitating them with a guillotine;, or dismembering them with a chainsaw.

The ESRB go onto comment that “[d]uring the course of the game, some female characters perform suggestive taunts and poses, including opening their legs or gyrating their hips. Some of the more provocative outfits are shed during battle, resulting in brief depictions of buttocks and breasts”

As one of the last reasons as to why the game was rated Mature, the ESRB state that the it contains moments where “[t]he camera occasionally pans close-up on breasts as they are jiggling.”

Bayonetta is set to be released this Fall on PS3 and 360. Thanks Platinum Games, you are awesome!

Bayonetta

Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Rating: Mature

Content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes

Rating summary: This is an action game in which players assume the role of an ancient witch who battles angels and demons while uncovering the mystery of her past. Players use hand-to-hand combat, magic attacks, and pistols to kill enemy creatures that often spray blood when hit. Players can also perform an assortment of over-the-top finishing moves – referred to in the game as "torture attacks" – on the creatures: impalement with an iron maiden; decapitation with a guillotine; dismemberment with a chainsaw; and summoning a demon that bites, then rips characters apart. During the course of the game, some female characters perform suggestive taunts and poses, including opening their legs or gyrating their hips. Some of the more provocative outfits are shed during battle, resulting in brief depictions of buttocks and breasts. The camera occasionally pans close-up on breasts as they are jiggling. Strong profanity (e.g., "****," sh*t," and "a*shole") can be heard throughout the dialogue.

Bayonetta gets a release date in Japan

Platinum Games? stylish action game Bayonetta has an official release date in Japan. Sega announced that the game will hit retailers on October 29 in Japan, and pre-ordering lands you a ?Rodin?s Selection,? a special soundtrack CD with a case that looks like a menu from a pub.

There?s little more information on what the CD will contain, but Sega stated it includes ?sounds hand-picked by Rodin himself.?

No word at this time for a global release, but as we reported earlier, Sony?s U.S. and European game profile pages indicated a ?2009? launch date. We?ll let you know when we hear a more specific release date for North America and Europe.

Bayonetta delayed for U.S., Europe until 2010

SEGA has confirmed that the western launch of stylish action romp Bayonetta has been pushed back until 2010.

The game is still on track for release in Japan for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in late October, though unfortunately, westerners will have to wait until next year as a result of SEGA wanting to avoid the Christmas rush.

Mike Hayes, president of SEGA West, commented: ?Bayonetta is an extremely important new IP for SEGA and adds a new level of depth to our growing portfolio.?

"As a result of market analysis, we have taken a Publishing decision that January 2010 is the optimum release time in the Western Markets to maximise this exciting new title's potential."

Bayonetta Will Be Region Locked, Sega Of Europe Says

Enterprising importers who are hoping to get a hold of Bayonetta ahead of its North American release date may find the way blocked. Kotaku is reporting that the upcoming action title will be region locked.

During Gamescom, Sega of Europe representatives said they want to protect sales outside of Europe, so Bayonetta will be region locked. That's standard operating procedure for many Japanese Xbox 360 releases, but it would be unusual for the PlayStation 3.

Asked for comment by Videogaming247, Sega of Europe said that there is "likely to be a release on the matter near the game's Japanese launch on October 29."

Seems like gamers outside of Japan might be out of luck. Bayonetta is currently scheduled for a January 2010 release in North America.

Demo hits JP store next week!

Bayonetta demo hitting the Japanese PSN October 8th
Posted on October 1, 2009

Bayonetta may not be coming out in the States until the new year, but that won't stop you from getting at least a small taste of it. Sega announced earlier today that Hideki Kamiya's new action game would have a demo posted on the Japanese PSN on October 8th.

Weighing in at a bit more than a 1.1GB, the demo will contain a tutorial and The Angel's Metropolis stage. By creating a free Japanese PSN account, any PS3 owner from any region of the world can download the demo. Click link for full article...

PS3 Bayonetta Experiencing Frame-Rate Issues?

Bayonetta, the titular character of Platinum Games’ and Sega’s next big action extravaganza, runs silky smooth and kicks ass six ways from Sunday – in all three planes of existence, nonetheless – but word on the street has it that she’s not running so smoothly on the Playstation 3.

During a recent demo event experienced in Japan’s Shinjuku Yodobashi, the major transit hub and political centre of the country, gamers got to take the PS3 version of Bayonetta for a little test-drive. Besides the comment that the game didn’t look so hot on big screens (leading us to speculate whether the game has any support for HD), one gamer commented that, “The PS3 version has consistent framerate issues. It’s just not as silky smooth as the 360 version.”

Which is odd given how other outlets have testified to the two versions’ similarity. It seems like these issues should be resolved by the time the game releases across North America and Europe in January 2010. As for being hammered out before the Bayonetta October-end release in Japan, the jury is out. Could this spur more gamers to check out the 360 version in place of the PS3 one (the port being handled by Sega)?

Bayonetta demo coming next week

SEGA has announced that a demo of stylish action romp Bayonetta will be released in North America and Europe on PSN on December 3, 2009.

For those out of the loop, Bayonetta casts you in the shoes of a gun-wielding witch tasked with gory mission of blasting through legions of creatures masquerading as angels. Don’t for one second think it’s going to be an easy ride, though – according to director Hideki Kamiya, the game will prove “sadistically hard.”

Released in Japan last month, the game has garnered top marks from videogame critics, earning itself a fine pat on the back from Famitsu with a whopping 38/40, along with perfect marks from EDGE magazine.

Bayonetta hits North America on January 5, 2010, followed by a European release on January 8.

Played the Demo and can say this is one game i will deffo not be getting, something about it just made the whole experience suck.

I've heard the exact opposite from most, I won't comment till I fully play the improved demo that SEGA is releasing.
