In Brink, two sides, "Resistance" and "Security", fight in the utopian city known as The Ark, a floating city surrounded by the waters of a flooded Earth. The Ark was designed as a prototype of a perfect city, with renewable resources and no pollution, large enough to support 5,000 residents. Its population has grown to 50,000 however, leading it to the brink (hence the name of the game) of a civil war.

Gameplay:

Brink is a first-person shooter built around a story mode playable online with up to 8 players in a co-operative style, against bots, or in competitive team-against-team multi-player. You will play as a fully customizable character. Custom characters can be created with gear bought with experience points earned by completing objectives.

Brink also features Splash Damage's SMART ("Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain") System. It allows players to maneuver around complex environments without equally complex input by analyzing their position and judging what they are trying to do. The movement style is that of parkour.

The game features four class types, designed to promote teamwork. The first class, Soldier, is always on the front lines. The Soldier can resupply teammates with ammo and carries high explosives to destroy key targets. The second class, Engineer, is geared more for fixing things. Engineers can buff their teammates' weapons and can also place turrets at strategic locations. The third class, Medic, primarily heals downed teammates, though they also buff their allies' health. The fourth class, the Operative, deals mostly behind enemy lines, hacking objectives and performing acts of sabotage. Operatives can interrogate downed opponents to provide intel on enemy locations or disguise themselves and operate as one of the enemy.

While in gameplay, both multiplayer and campaign, the player can bring up a "wheel" of sorts providing various objectives to fulfill. Each of these objectives give a specific amount of experience. The available missions are produced based upon the player's specific position on the map, his relative skill, current progress in the overall mission, and a wide variety of factors.

Features:

  • Not Just Another Hero
Brink’s advanced player customization offers a near-endless combination of looks for your character – allowing for the appearance of your character to be truly unique. As you progress through the game and acquire more experience, you’ll have even more opportunities for customization.
  • Two Sides to Every Story
Choose to fight through the single player campaign as either a member of the Resistance or the Security and then take your same character online to play cooperatively or competitively against other players.
  • Blurring the Lines
Take your unique character online at any time you choose! Brink allows you to seamlessly move between your single player campaign, co-op with friends, and intense multiplayer action. Multiplayer takes the story online where you can play with up to seven other people (or AI characters) cooperatively as you take on the opposing faction or with up to 16 players competitively.
  • Play SMART
Brink uses the familiar shooter controls that you’re used to, without frustrating, artificial constraints and adds a new feature: the SMART button. When you press the SMART button, the game dynamically evaluates where you’re trying to get to, and makes it happen. Whether you’re a seasoned FPS veteran or someone just getting started, you’ll be able to make more intelligent decisions during the fast-paced action with SMART.
  • Context-Sensitive Goals and Rewards
Objectives, communications, missions, and inventory selection are all dynamically generated based on your role, your condition, your location, your squad-mates, and the overall status of the battle in all gameplay modes. You’ll always know exactly where to go, what to do when you get there, and what your reward will be for success.

Brink dev diary explains the story and revolution

Bethesda today released the first developer diary for Brink. In this video, you’ll learn about the Ark’s civil war waging between the Security and Resistance.

It’s nice to hear that Brink has a decent background story, so it will hopefully offer more than the typical run-‘n-gun action. We are certainly keeping our eyes on Brink, and we suggest you do, as well. Expect to hear more about it in Cologne next week.

Latest Brink Trailer is 'Ready and Able'

With Brink edging tantalisingly ever closer to the erm, brink of release, Bethesda and developer Splash Damage have put out a brand spanking new trailer for the game today, showing a quick glimpse of just a few of the abilities at your peristent custom character's disposal.

From leaping and jumping, to the ability to self-revive or hack enemy turrets, there's a whole variety of ways to play Brink, whether it's all-out gung-ho with a heavy trooper class, or a more subtle, stealthy approach with a nimble operative soldier class.

Check out the short trailer to see more of Brink's various abilities, then look out for Brink when it launches on May 17th in North America and May 20th in Europe.

Brink release date brought forward a week

Bethesda today confirmed that development on its first-person shooter Brink is now fully complete, sooner than expected.

As a result of the studio’s hard work, Brink will now be released earlier than originally stated, launching in North America on May 10, 2011 and in Europe of May 13, 2011.

"Production wrapped on Brink earlier than we planned and we didn't see any reason to keep gamers from getting their hands on this highly anticipated game as soon as it was ready," said Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing for Bethesda Softworks. "It's apparent from the tremendous reaction so far that people are eager to jump online and play, and if we can make that happen earlier - we're going to."

Brink looks set to offer a fresh and exciting take on the first-person shooter genre, with integrated single-player, co-op and multiplayer components, plus a variety of gorgeous-looking dynamic battlefields made possible by the power of Brink’s proprietary technology.

Brink will launch on time despite PSN outage

The launch of the PlayStation 3 version of Brink will be unaffected by the PlayStation Network outages, Bethesda told EG. As Brink is all about the online multiplayer, it’s important to note that you can still play the game with bots in a single-player experience.

Our review of Brink will be delayed at this point, but we hope to provide single-player mode impressions as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Has anybody played the BETA of this, it looks good but want to know how it compares with other titles in the same category.

Its a lot of fun as far as Story mode and challanges go, but it was made for online so got to wait to see how that is but yea it has that team fortress feel to it with a little bit of Killzone.

Brink Online Will be Tweaked to Reduce Lag; Free DLC Promised for June

According to Bethesda, "some players" have been reporting lag issues while playing the console version of Splash Damage's Brink online.

While this might not be the case for PS3 owners yet, Splash Damage and Bethesda have already put into effect a few tweaks that will alleviate the issues when the PSN comes back online.

Bethesda has posted on their blog that until the patch comes, they've reduced the "Campaign" and most "Freeplay" modes from 16 human players to 8 - 4 vs 4 (with bots, we assume) - hopefully "resulting in less lag and more fun."

8 vs 8 battles - when the PSN is back online - are still available for those not suffering from crippling lag and can be found via a new "Big Teams" configuration in Freeplay - and of course, in custom private matches.

The changes should be in full effect by the time the PSN is back online and no patch will be required to see the benefits of the new setup.

As a token of appreciation for people's patience and for their support of Brink, Bethesda announced that they will be making the first piece of Brink DLC available for free when it hits next month. According to Bethesda, players should expect additional maps and "new content"... I should hope it's new as well... I'm not sure I could ever forgive them if they gave us old content!

so anyone been playing this online? pretty cool going through the missions with a friend so far. ive enjoyed the gamne alot....plus since im a slipnut it was a bonus since this game came with an AWESOME slipcover from best buy!

I saw the slip at wal-mart it did look amazing for a slip. PS3 slips typically go all out. ie. Bioshock.

ps. I read not that many great reviews of the game on AMZ ... most say their is no story, so dont buy it for that ... and the commercial I see looks like it has a great story , so if there is no story mode ... then dont know how much I would like it.......
