My biggest things are Should I go AMD or Intel. I7 (quad core) or AMD Phenom (6 cores), the AMD's are cheaper.

And then 4GB of DDR3 ram or 6 or 8..

I'm pretty set on the GTX 460 heard its a beast.

I am not an AMD guy so whatever floats your boat. I'd leave that SSD out of the mix and opt for 2 15K Raptors running in RAID 0.

A buddy of mine has a setup with two of those babies and his load times from boot to OS from Windows logo to main screen is less than 2 secs. Yes, I know that's almost unbelievable lol. The logo is a mere flash on the screen lol

The Intel CPUs will be much expensive. They also have a 6 core CPU that will probably blow that Phenom out of the water. The Intel 950s i7 I believe. ASUS Rampage III mobo or a Gygabyte UD9 board with a Corsair Obsidian 800D case for me :D. With the price of that 460 video card couldn't you go higher? what are the price difference? I have 2 470 GTX in my rig right now and they run beautifully.

I have a $1000 budget, build me a setup with Raid 0, at least a GTX 460 and one of your I7's, I like to see what other people do and have opinions on. You are also very very very good with computers, and I've never built one.

Ah I didn't know you had a $1000 budget lol. If that's your budget then you are getting a good system then.

You can get some good power out of that CPU. The SSD will also give you that performance. Just keep it for OS and nothing more so the load times don't become higher.

That HDD might bottleneck your system though. I can see you are going for storage. If I was you I'd rather take advantage of the 6GB/s option. Here's two suggestions:

Western Digital Caviar Black WD6402AAEX 640GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - $69.99 ($10 more than the one you have listed)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136544

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EALX 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive $74 ($15 more than the one you listed)

Personally, I'd go for the 640GB and take advantage of the 6GB/s and the bigger cache. $69 is actually a pretty decent price. If speed is what you want that's what I'd get, because that one you list is 5400 RPM and at 1TB performance wise it might bottleneck your rig especially with that SSD installed.

True, I could add another HDD later if I run out of room too.

(Had to get rid of blu-ray writer, but I might make the blu-ray writer my only drive, still haven't decided.)

saw where you got your info. if you're going for light gaming, why buy a 460? lol. and where's the heatsink?

i'd buy that 1tb hard drive on black friday and see if you can't get a 2tb drive for the same price.

but it looks good. aside from the ugly as hell card reader. who uses those? lol

also, don't forget to get some bluetooth in there so you can do wii emulation

doubt this makes any diff to you, but worth noting

Unfortunately, as Jarred mentioned in the introduction, building a new system today is pretty ill advised. Intel is set to release Sandy Bridge in another two months and with it we'll see a big reset in the components we recommend. Within six or so months of the Sandy Bridge arrival, AMD is expected to release its first new high end server/desktop architecture, codenamed Bulldozer. Thus my ideal build would limit spending on the CPU and motherboard, and move those dollars toward the rest of the components in the system. The idea is that you spend enough on a CPU/motherboard today to get good performance, but minimize the expense to enable upgrading in the not too distant future. You can then take your "old" CPU and motherboard and turn it into an awesome secondary system for a family member or even yourself (hello HTPC!).

I'm waiting till cyber Monday at least now. I can get the 6 core I7 for $200 if I wait till December 1st.

I'm guessing I should just keep a eye out on these going on sale over black friday/cyber monday. Any suggestions on how to make it better and cheaper are appreciated as I've never built a computer before.
