3 discs.
Amazon shows running time of 181 mins. - which means one of those discs is the original version.
I am guessing second and third are possibly extended version and extras.

waiting for the specs before I pull the trigger

saw the film for the first time this year (extended cut) and absolutely loved it.

FWIW- Theatrical cut is better (and this from a major die hard DWW fan. I have even read the book a dozen times).
Yes, the extra material is great to see - but the theatrical cut flows a millions times better (and the EC was put together by producers, and was not sanctioned by Costner).

Thanks for that info. The last time I saw the movie was a year or two after it hit the cinemas and I never really looked into those details afterwards. Good to know.

What is "Amaray style" art?!
View attachment 389627

Of course it's all in the eye of the beholder and not easy to get across what I meant by the comment . . . just to say that the effects achievable on metal benefit some images better than others and that there's little to no scope of improving this uninteresting DANCES WITH WOLVES image by the metal packaging . . . even when the same image is used it will look better on metal than on paper.
Not talking about slipcovers/slipcases - where there's scope for interesting finishes and 'bossing.
By Amaray art I'm referring to the art on the wraparound data sheet of the Amaray itself.

Examples can be found to support both sides of the argument but I propose a few here (UK) - only from this year - where the art suits/looks better on metal packaging than it would on the paper Amaray sleeve :-

Don't know if this is final but not what I was expecting for a steelbook . . . looking as it does more Amaray style art than steelbook:-

Even though used on the German Amarays as well as the 2011 German steelbook I find this artwork more steelbook-friendly (from the days of proper old school pull tab cellophane instead of cheapo easily torn shrinkwrap):-
Yeh but floating heads/busts:vomit:

Yeah I had read that. I nearly pulled the trigger on the UK BD a few months ago to see what that version is like but decided to wait a bit longer and thankfully it paid off.

Absolutely wonderful film though. I got the soundtrack shortly afterwards

As you know floating heads/torsos not uncommon on both steelbook and Amaray packaging for all genres of film.

A lovingly crafted film . . . shame same can't be said about the steelbook . . . if any title is more deserving of a WWA . . . maybe with a faux cowskin or suedette type slipcase like the one used for the DVD digipack:-

Ok, so this artwork may be a literal "dance with a wolf" . . . with that neat little sidestep from both parties . . .

. . . but this art

better than this for example
1535220744356.png
(or something else) ? I don't think so.

Not just the artwork but the colour too - a golden prairie colour more associated with Westerns in steelbooks than any other colour (YOUNG GUNS, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, SERAPHIM FALLS. 3:10 to YUMA, BONE TOMAHAWK etc.):-

Yeah, John Barry absolutely destroyed with that score.
The German steelbook (despite the German title) is quite nice (great art) and has both cuts.

Shame about the region A (lock, I'm assuming).
Get the german steelbook. It's region B with both versions.
Obviously Shout means theirs is the first time the theatrical edition has been available on blu ray in the U.S.
the German steelbook has been out since 2011 with the theatrical cut, and I also have a UK blu ray from 2009 with the theatrical cut.

I have that amaray as well. I want less floating heads for the steel and if possible both versions, at least one of which being UHD. That's what I want!

Dances With Wolves would be incredible in UHD with Dolby Vision or HDR. I'm not a big floating head fan, but I don't mind the German steelbook cover. It's like a painting. TBH - DWW never really had any singular iconic poster. If you remember - the release one-sheet was a square box of Dunbar's head over a backdrop of purplish Buffalo stampede.

And the later posters did a similar layout

The German steelbook is actually from one of the release posters (I don't know which territory it was used for, though)

I'd prefer something along the lines of this slip.
