Plot: Dante's Inferno is loosely based on the first part of Dante's Divine Comedy. The player controls Dante, a veteran of the Crusades, who chases his beloved Beatrice and attempts to free her soul from Lucifer. As his pursuit takes him through the 9 Circles of the Inferno to Beatrice, he will battle monsters, face his sins, his family past and his war crimes.

Gameplay: The game has been touted as being similar to God of War, in which there are light and heavy attacks as well as magic. Dante's primary weapon is a scythe. He also has magical powers such as a holy cross, which fires a burst of light that destroys anything in its path. It has not yet been confirmed if there are more powers or weapons that Dante can use. Also, there is a feature called beast taming where, in the game, demons ride huge beasts and if Dante is able to kill the rider, he can control the beast. Depending which beast is controlled, he can use them for different attacks such as breathing fire on his enemies or bashing them. He is also able to condemn or absolve his foes and many damned shades throughout the journey, gaining righteous or unholy points with each absolution or condemnation. The resulting effect from the more righteousness points attained, the more powerful holy cross attacks become and the more unholy points are achieved, the more powerful Dante's scythe becomes.

Although God of War III may not make it this year, we might get something similar from EA. Now, before you start groaning, you should recall some of EA's latest productions; both Dead Space and Mirror's Edge were excellent titles. So perhaps they can do something decent in the straight-up action category.

As CVG reports, British magazine PSM3 has a full 10-page feature preview of Dante's Inferno, a game that was only recently announced. It appears that EA describes the promising title as "Dead Space meets God of War in hell," and the article further states that "button-for-button the controls are identical to [God of War's]." The entire premise feels familiar, in fact: enemies will drop health and magic orbs, there will be QTEs and combos with both light and heavy attacks, and yeah, you even open chests by "holding circle." But of course, the topic of the storyline is vastly different, as EA says it's "altogether more unpleasant" (um, that should be the understatement of the century) as we'll be following the main character's trip through Dante's Inferno. If you're not aware, it's the first part of Dante Alighieri's ancient classic, "The Divine Comedy," which featured a character's adventure through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory, and finally, Heaven. If you've read it and understood it, we give you respect, if you've read it in the original Italian...well, you're just freaky smart. Unless you're Italian.

Anyway, we don't doubt that EA will ignore about 99% of that novel, but that's only because they'll have to. It almost seems wrong to reduce that book to something so basic (and let's not forget, Dante never "fought" anything), but it's still a cool idea. Right?

EA just confirmed that Dante’s Inferno will release in 2010.

The news came as part of a press release announcing an animated feature film for the game, to be created by Starz Media, the company behind all the Dead Space cartoons.

“The feature-length project will expand on the story in EA’s new, must-have game coming out for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system in 2010,” said the announcement.

This is the first time EA’s put a date on the title. The announcement press release says nothing about time-scale.

Dante's Inferno demo

Visceral Games announced today that it will release a demo for Dante’s Inferno in December. The ‘Gates of Hell’ demo includes the first level, and will help show off Visceral Games’ adaptation of Dante’s Alighieri’s epic poem, The Divine Comedy.

In the demo you will be introduced to the main character, shown the game’s epic storyline, and highlight some of the intense action and combat. You can expect fast-paced hack-n-slash combat as you fend off waves of enemies before taking the ultimate battle against Death. After you take down Death, you’ll be armed with Death’s scythe, a powerful holy cross, and you’ll finally be ready to tear open the Gates of Hell. You’ll also get two cinematic movies in the demo.

“Our main goal from the start of this project has been to create a journey that will make gamers truly feel like they are going through hell,” said executive producer Jonathan Knight. “The demo will give everyone some insight into how we are treating the story and a taste of the gameplay. And with nine more circles of hell to explore once the game comes out in February, we are literally just scratching the surface.”

EA’s Dante’s Inferno is slated for release in North American beginning on February 9, 2010 and in Europe on February 12, 2010. It will be available on the PlayStation 3. The demo, due out next month, will be available on the PS3.

VISCERAL GAMES IGNITES SOCIAL GAMING WITH THREE LITTLE WORDS: GO TO HELL

Dante's Inferno Application Sends Friends, Family, Places and Products to Hell with the Click of a Button

Redwood City, Calif. – November 23, 2009 – Visceral Games, an Electronic Arts studio (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced ‘Go to Hell’, an all-new social application inspired by the upcoming game, Dante’s Inferno™. This application takes the poem’s canonized nine circles of hell, and brings them into everyday life. With the click of a button, anyone can send a friend foe, place, product or brand to one of the nine circles of hell. Angry at your mom for grounding you? Send her to ‘Treachery’. Mad at your ex- for cheating? Send them to ‘Lust’. The free ‘Go to Hell’ app launches today on Facebook® Platform, with consumers able to share data across other online destinations including MySpace, iGoogle and Twitter. Dante’s Inferno releases February 9 on Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PSP®(PlayStation®Portable).

“This app is awesome! Not only will it be a blast to see who the world sends to hell, but it’s also a great opportunity to take Dante’s notion of the 9 circles of hell and make it current and relevant for people who may not be familiar with the poem,” said executive producer Jonathan Knight. “Let the damning begin.”

The ‘Go to Hell’ app calls on people to damn others to the nine circles of hell: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud or Treachery. From there, users can choose to punish or absolve their victim… and see how the community reacts. The ‘Go to Hell’ app comes complete with a ‘Hell Browser’ that serves up a snapshot of all the activity in hell on a day-to-day basis. In the browser, see who takes top spot as the most deplored evil demon – be they a loudmouthed celebrity, a slimy politician or a hated TV character.

Facebook users can head over to http://apps.facebook.com/gotohell , while iPhone users will soon be able to access the free app via the Apple AppStore. All other users can follow this link to eternal damnation http://gotohell.dantesinferno.com.

Dante’s Inferno is rated M for Mature by the ESRB and is currently awaiting PEGI classification. Dante's Inferno is all for PS3 exclusives; demo and 'Divine Edition'

An early demo of Dante’s Inferno is headed to the PlayStation 3 in the U.S. today, weeks before the Xbox 360 version. European games will get the demo on December 24 on both systems.

Showing more love for the PS3, Visceral Games announced today the ‘Divine Edition’ of Dante’s Inferno, exclusively for the PS3. The Divine Edition includes the game’s soundtrack, developer commentaries, a digital art book from Wayne Barlowe, and the complete Longfellow translation of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno.

"We are thrilled to offer an exclusive game pack for PlayStation 3 gamers,” said Jonathan Knight, Executive Producer for Dante’s Inferno. “The PlayStation platform has a long history of delivering AAA action/adventure games. Adding Dante’s Inferno to that rich catalogue is very exciting for the team. And with the demo now available on the PlayStation Network, players can finally get a taste of what awaits them in the full game on Feb 9th.”

Perhaps the best part of today’s announcement is the fact that the Divine Edition will retail for $59.99 USD. You do not need to worry about changing your preorders as the Divine Edition is the version all PS3 owners are getting when the game is released on Feb. 9, 2010.

Don’t forget to hit up the PlayStation Store later to download your free demo of Dante’s Inferno.

The Trials of St. Lucia pack should add an extra dimension to EA Visceral's hack and slash epic when it arrives for download on April 29th.

Dante's Inferno is available in Australia on February 4th, in Europe on February 5th with the North American release following on February 9th.
