Dead Space 2 looking "incredible," says Visceral

Visceral Games has teased that upcoming survival horror sequel Dead Space 2 is looking ‘incredible,’ with the development team now able to shift up a gear following the release of Dante’s Inferno this week.

Speaking during a recent interview, executive producer Jonathan Knight commented: "That's [Dead Space 2] next up for us. There's a different executive producer on it. It's moving into full production and the company is excited about it.”

Knight teased that the game is looking mighty fine, and observed that while not straying from its roots, the team have tweaked a few things to polish up the experience: “I've seen it internally, and it's looking incredible. They have some great ideas - it's still a space horror piece, but they've expanded upon the first game nicely."

ive been having the first one for a while but ive only played like for a day then another game came out so i just moved on and sadly never looked back

Dead Space Extraction Coming to PSN?

According to a recent survey, Dead Space Extraction could be coming to PSN ahead of Dead Space 2's release and could be offered as a free preorder incentive for the forthcoming sequel.

The PSN port of the on-rails Wii version of Dead Space could also be accompanied by the release of Dead Space Planet Cracker, a resource strategy game that places you in charge of your very own mining concern.

Described as an extension to Dead Space 2's story, Planet Cracker could well act as a similar precursor to the game in the same way that Fable II Pub Games awarded exclusive in-game items and currency to take with you into the main game on Xbox Live.

The survey, which was forwarded to Kotaku says that Planet Cracker would have players "maximize their daily profit" and "defending their hard-won ore from Space Pirates." Sounds interesting.

i didn't see it coming to psn but i always thought it would come eventually to blu-ray since it has some stuff that wasn't seen in the hd versions and the rep from visceral games said that the end has something to do with leading into Dead Space 2.

Award-Winning Horror Author Pens Dead Space Prequel Novel

The first Dead Space novel has been announced today - a prequel story entitled Dead Space: Martyr.

Horror novelist B.K. Evenson, award-winning writer of Last Days has penned the book, which is out this July (A Tor Trade Paperback, $14.99).

Dead Space: Martyr goes deep into the game's intricate backstory, detailing the history of the Church of Unification, the origins of the mysterious Black Marker and the discovery of a bizarre alien artefact of unknown power.

The story kicks off when geophysicist Michael Altman discovers said alien artefact deep within the Chicxulub crater, and begins experiencing terrifying visions of the dead, vivid dreams and violent murders when in close proximity. This event marks the very beginning of the Dead Space saga.

"One of the most compelling storytelling aspects of Dead Space has been the Church of Unitology: its origins, power, and role in Dead Space," says Tor editor, Eric Raab. "Writer B.K. Evenson gets into the terrifying aspects of mob mentality like no other writer today. This isn’t only a great story within the Dead Space universe; it’s a great novel on its own."

"The Dead Space world is incredibly vast and rich -- expanding its fiction into a novel lets us share parts of the story that just can’t fit into videogames," said Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer of Dead Space 2. "We hope Dead Space: Martyr will be the first of many books to let fans dive deeply into Dead Space’s secrets and immersive lore."

Dead Space: Martyr is out in July 2010, and should be a nice primer for the arrival of Dead Space 2 early next year.

Visceral: Gamers will be "blown away" by Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 executive producer Steve Papoutsis has declared that punters are "going to be blown away" by the survival horror sequel's production values, and reckons the game’s visuals will measure up “very favourably” to Uncharted’s sumptuous showcase.

"Uncharted is a beautiful, completely awesome game," said Papoutsis, during a chinwag with the folks at EDGE magazine.

"I think it [Dead Space 2] is going to stack up very favourably. We were very proud of what we accomplished on the first game. Obviously we go back to it quite often to look at what we did and when we compare the two, the advancements the team has been able to make from a visual perspective are unbelievable. It really looks phenomenal and it's a major step up from the previous game visually.

"The art team has done an amazing job, along with the engineers and everyone else that's contributing to creating the game and the engine, which we've continued to evolve and modify," he explained. "They've really stepped their game up and I think people are going to be blown away by what they've been able to achieve."

Visceral: Dead Space 2 multiplayer will 'surprise and excite'

Steve Papoutsis, executive producer on Visceral horror sequel Dead Space 2, has moved to quell fears over the game’s multiplayer mode, promising the feature will ‘surprise and excite’ punters who fear it’s inclusion may lead to a watered down single player experience.

Speaking during a chinwag with the folks at EDGE, Papoutsis stated, “I think that until people see what we're doing with the multiplayer there's always going to be speculation and we encourage that."

"It's exciting for us that people care about what we're doing and in the months to come when we start talking more about what we're doing with multiplayer I think people are going to be excited, and some of those people who are maybe concerned that we're doing something weird or watering down the singleplayer experience to create the multiplayer are going to be surprised, and pleasantly so."

He went on to add that the developer is "not putting that [multiplayer] component in the singleplayer game," and emphasised that Visceral is working hard to ensure the solo offering is "as good as it can possibly be."

“We actually have the luxury of having another team that's working with us [on multiplayer]. We've taken people that made the original Dead Space and given them the goal of making a very compelling and uniquely Dead Space multiplayer game,” he explained.

"Those guys sit with us, work with us, and they understand how important it is to make sure that whatever we do on the franchise is extremely high quality and is extremely seated in the Dead Space universe."

EA CV outs Dead Space: Extraction for PS3?

Electronic Arts’ Wii blaster Dead Space: Extraction looks set to make the jump to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, according to the CV of a rendering engineer over at EA Montreal.

The CV itself reads: "Currently porting the popular Wii title based on EuroCom's EngineX to XBLA and PSN."

The on-the-rails prequel was previously hinted at making the transition to Sony and Microsoft’s platforms back in February, courtesy of a survey that suggested a high definition port of the game was in the pipeline.

It was also speculated at the time that the game could be offered as a pre-order incentive for the forthcoming sequel Dead Space 2, which is due to hit shelves in early 2011.

Dead Space 2 online is 'really innovative' says EA boss

Electronic Arts head honcho John Riccitiello has confirmed that Dead Space 2’s online multiplayer is still very much on the cards, and revealed that the feature contains some “really innovative” gameplay elements.

Chatting with IndustryGamers, Riccitiello commented, “It's got some really innovative online gameplay," adding, "I'm personally a nut about Dead Space. Rare is it for me to finish a game on more than one platform, but I did in the case of Dead Space, and Dead Space 2 is more than a worthy sequel; it's going to be a monster. So I'm really, really pleased with that."

With E3 just around the corner and Dead Space 2 due to show its face at the Los Angeles-based event, expect to hear more on the sequel’s eagerly anticipated online component some time next week.

Dead Space 2 is due out in early 2011.

EA unveils Dead Space: Ignition for PSN

Yesterday there was a Dead Space teaser image and accompanying chatter of a big announcement? Well, Electronic Arts has revealed that it all pertains to a downloadable Dead Space 2 prequel for PlayStation Network.

Titled Dead Space: Ignition, the prequel is one of “many extensions” preceding the release of the hotly anticipated Dead Space 2 early next year, and is scheduled to hit PSN this autumn.

According to the press blurb, Ignition “combines an interactive comic-style story with three unique hacking mini games; Hardware Crack, Trace Route and System Override.”

It’ll feature four different endings, with players able to gain access to various unlockables upon completion of each game, including a special suit that protagonist Isaac Clarke can utilize in Dead Space 2.

Dead Space 2 Getting The Graphic Novel & Animated Movie Treatment

At a recent Comic-Con panel, titled “Building a Horror Entertainment Franchise: Dead Space 2,” EA unveiled their recent pieces of Dead Space 2 convergence; namely an animated movie called Dead Space Aftermath, and a graphic novel called Dead Space Salvage.

Being published by IDW and featuring the visual stylings of Christopher Shy, Dead Space Salvage follows the Magpies, a rogue group of miners, who discover Dead Space 1’s mining ship, the USG Ishimura. What they thought was their Christmas come early, Salvage tells the story of the events that sees the mining crew’s fortunes flip to catastrophic ends, as they discover the ship’s dormant necromorphs start to reanimate. Dead Space Salvage is coming in December 2010.

Dead Space Aftermath on the other hand, tells the story of the first-responder mission to Aegis VII, exploring how the Government sent an unwitting crew to get exposed to “Marker shards.” The Starz/Film Roman piece reveals how the Government in the Dead Space universe set out to produce a viable “Marker blueprint” carrier, and how they did so no matter what the cost. Dead Space Aftermath will be available in January 2011.

So if convergence is your thing – it better be, because it’s the new industry craze, along with motion controls and 3D – then look out for Dead Space Salvage and Dead Space Aftermath this coming December 2010 and January 2011 respectively.
