Dead Space 2 - Officially Announced!

Electronic Arts employee Patrik Patel has cheekily updated his LinkedIn profile - revealing he’s working as a Technical/Development Director for Dead Space 2. Call us “obvious” but we’d assume the project has to be rolling before work can begin.

Perhaps we’ll see something at E3. Although don’t hold your breath. It’s unlikely this game will see the light of day until next year.

Dead Space is a third-person survival horror-action video game, developed by EA Redwood Shores for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows and released in October 2008. The player takes on the role of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles a polymorphic, virus-like, alien infestation which turns humans into grotesque alien monsters called "Necromorphs", on board a stricken interstellar mining ship named the USG Ishimura.

The player takes the role of Isaac Clarke (named after science fiction writers Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke), an engineer who must fight his way through a stricken mining ship infested by the Corruption, a hostile, virus-like, free-roaming alien DNA with the ability to reanimate the bodies of the dead, turning them into grotesque monstrosities called Necromorphs. The game features an 'over the shoulder' third-person perspective, similar to games Resident Evil 4, Dark Sector and Gears of War. The interface does not feature a traditional head-up display. Instead, information is relayed to the player via holographic projections, which hover over or in front of Isaac's weapons and suit; his armor also plays as an indicator, the 'health meter' which is integrated into the spine of his armor indicates how much life he has left which ranges from red (indicating low/critical), yellow (half) and blue (full or near-full). An in-game store can be accessed where items can be bought and sold or stored for later use. The only menu in which the game is not still in progress is the pause menu and the save console menu (though the save console becomes inactive during cutscenes.)

Zero gravity and decompressed environments also appear in Dead Space, and Isaac can navigate through them using his pressurized suit and magnetic boots. Some levels even lead out onto the surface of the ship's hull. Floating debris presents a hazard, however, and Isaac can lose his footing and simply float off into space. Isaac's suit also has a limited amount of air while in airless environments, which can cause him to suffocate, forcing the player to move faster when in these situations. In keeping with Isaac's profession as an engineer rather than a soldier, weapons in the game are mostly improvised from mining tools, such as a plasma cutter, a hydrazine torch used as a flamethrower, and a force cannon emitting powerful shock waves, although a triple-barreled automatic military rifle is also available. Stasis can be used in the game to slow down enemies and objects temporarily, and a kinesis module allows Isaac to pick up and throw items. Text, audio and video logs can be found throughout the game which serve to explain some of the game's plot, and detail the crew's plight as the ship is attacked and overrun by Necromorphs.

The game's themes pay heavy homage to director Andrei Tarkovsky's famous science fiction film Solaris, and appear to have been especially included by the game producers. The player is constantly pestered by visions of his girlfriend, in exact parallel to the film (itself based on the homonymous Polish book by Stanislaw Lem), and all the inhabitants on the ship are similarly haunted and controlled by visions of loved ones, raising the theme of mind control based on emotional attachments in outer space. Furthermore, like Solaris, the alien planet the ship orbits is later discovered to ultimately be the source of the mind control and devastation onboard. Free will, the limits of human mind versus the heart, and how far the mind persists in hallucinations to recover the memory of loved ones are among the themes explored in this game.

Well I heard that Dead Space 2 was in development a good few months back, but still, this is sweet news for us all who have grown out of Resident Evil's more action themes and dated control scheme. I was also addicted to the trophies.

but its a creepy game...i thought your love for horror would outweigh that third person view concern...i haven't played it in a while but I like it...:scat:

I was hoping it would but it just didn't. i agree, it is very creepy but the controls are just non-responmsive to me and i can't get by that. the motion kinda reminds me of the way KZ2 moves but with a KB, haha.

Visceral 'not ready' to reveal Dead Space 2

Visceral Games boss Glen Schofield has indicated that the firm isn?t quite ready to spill the beans on Dead Space 2 just yet, instead deciding to keep it?s gaze fixed firmly on Dante?s Inferno and Dead Space: Extraction.

The survival horror sequel?s existence was inadvertently confirmed earlier in the year via a developer LinkedIn profile, though the title has since been removed from the CV. Despite this, it doesn?t look like we?ll see a formal announcement anytime soon.

Speaking to the chaps at VG247, Schofield commented, ?Our two big games are Extraction and Dante?s Inferno: we?re not ready to announce anything [else] yet, no.?

?These two games are the games we?re really focussing on. One of the reasons we changed the [studio's] name [to Visceral] is to go, ?We?re focussing on quality.? So right now the focus is on getting these two games to the highest quality. The studio is really working on that.?

?I think talking about anything other than that just takes the focus away from the games we?re working on.?

When pushed on a Dead Space 2 reveal, an EA PR rep jumped in with a ?no comment.? we will bring you more info on the sequel as soon as it becomes available to us.

Dead Space 2 nearly in production

The sequel to Visceral Games’ Dead Space is in the final stages of pre-production, according to a job posting from earlier in the month on LinkedIn, discovered by superannuation today.

“The game is in the later stages of pre-production, ready for production in the next few months, with many of the navigational and combat mechanics in place,” according to the advertisement page. “We have complete autonomy and creative control over our own decisions.”

The advertisement goes on to state that EA is 100 percent “committed to this IP, and has already worked on IP extensions such as comics, animated features, and action figures.” The LinkedIn advertisement seeks a lead combat and controls designer.

“This M-rated action/shooter sequel will set new standards for an action-packed story-driven console experience. Our team values are as follows: Gameplay comes first, controller feel is everything, culture of creativity, be highly iterative, playtest early and often, learn from failure, work fast and smart, and surround ourselves with the best talent in the world,” according to the advertisement.

EA announces Dead Space 2

Electronic Arts has officially lifted the curtains on survival horror sequel Dead Space 2, confirming the game is currently in development for PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 platforms.

According to EA’s press blurb, the sequel marks the return of protagonist Isaac Clarke, who will apparently be “taking the fight to the Necromorphs” in a fright fest packed with new weapons, characters and “epic zero-G environments.”

Dead Space 2 executive producer Steve Papoutsis commented: “The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of Necromorphs that need killing.”

“In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you.”

The original Dead Space launched back in October 2008, and has since gone on to shift around 1.4 million copies across PS3, PC and 360. A prequel, Dead Space: Extraction, was released for Nintendo Wii a few months back.

Dead Space 2 and Crysis 2 due out before March 2011

If you are feeling antsy about the sequels to Dead Space and Crysis, you may only have about one year to wait. According to EA’s John Riccitiello, both games are expected to be released within the 2011 fiscal year, meaning we could get our hands on these games before March 31, 2011. That may feel like a long wait, but we hope that means the development teams will have plenty of time to put out high quality titles.

We can expect developers Visceral Games and Crytek, for Dead Space 2 and Crysis 2 respectively, to improve upon the success of the first games. Both games will be released on the PlayStation 3.Crysis is considered to be one of the most taxing games on PC hardware, but we can expect the PS3’s power to handle the sequel quite well.
